Just so people know you can't use deck screws on your hangers and you can't be using OSB exposed outside.

instead of moving the joist and making shorter blocking, could you have just added another joist where you needed it? Also, why did you chose not to use some flashing tape on your beams for more water protection. Great videos

Hi, I've been running through a lot of DIY videos in anticipation of building my own deck. But I do have a question I am hoping you'd be able to answer for me. On decks utilizing a cantilever, why are the joist hangers not inverted at the header joist since it is the joists that are actually supporting the header and not the other way around?

nice video. if there was one piece of information I would add, since this is a DIY, you might speak to the hardware you are using. To meet code, you are supposed to use very specific screws to attach joists. You can't just grab construction screws. They don't have the required sheer strength and could lead to catastrophic failure. Simpson makes screws that meet code. 1.5" for mounting the joist hanger to the header. 2.5" angled through joist into header. just an FYI for any DIY'ers like myself trying to build a deck.

So I am using your post method for a pergola that I am putting up. How do I make sure that the 6 x 6 posts that I am using are square across for when I connect the cross beams?

How did you account for the varying joist depth where they are sitting on top of the beam? Are some just "floating" above the beam?

Can the beam be canterlevered past the support posts? I have three posts and a 12 foot span, can I space the posts 4 feet apart and have two feet on each side beyond the post?

What part of the country are you in? Somewhere windy? The amount of hardware you used is far more than id expect to see.

I bought too much wood all at once.. all the 2x8s turned into snakes by the time i got to em.. .. couple hundred dollar mistake.. but I can use some still for the outer stairs and landing.. Thanks for the great videos.. well made too..

The adjustable Simpson post tie is cool, but way too short to hold a post with any significant strength. The need to make them go higher up the post.

Is this lumber treated?

Build the rim in place instead of on the ground and then lifting the HUGE beam.

Personally I would have anchored joist hangers to the front of your concrete porch, started the wood deck from there.

Use half inch EXTERIOR GRADE plywood for builfding your girder support beam. Its going OUTSIDE, osb disintegrates and rots!!! Dont do that again

Why place decking over concrete and not just extend deck beyond concrete? More seamless, but that concrete isn’t going anywhere versus deck which has a finite lifetime.

Good video, but every time the music came on I had to lower the volume and every time you have to speak I had to put the volume up! It was very painful!

Why not treated wood

On your front header joist... Shouldn't you have installed the hanger brackets upside down? The Joists are the ones holding up that header, not the other way around.

Could you not just add a joist beside the one you’re short ?

Bring all your audio down to a -5db in post produciton, also when recording your vocals make sure that your dB are not peaking or red lining. Great info but the audio was so horrible that it was nearing unwatchable. I'm a professional wedding videographer

Okay buddy, good video but the OSB is a no, no. Honestly I wouldn't use OSB with anything under my toe nails.

well MR DIY first code violation using common deck screws on the hanger number 2 code violation you did not have any connector plates connecting the post to the beam even though you notched it you are required to use steel connector plates and where you have a joint on the beam you are supposed to lap the beam the beam sol act as a whole or a solid beam and not be in 2 pieces. its not called a header joist its called a rim joist and a proper way to do it is single ply 2x material with a Facia Board that would stager the joints and does not require hangers and should be face screwed or nailed ..

Using OSB on a deck just completely ruined it.
