Want to know more about what fishing gear I use and why..? I get so many questions on this stuff so I thought id do a full tackle rundown on all my reels, my Dobyns rods, what braids when, leader choice and why I chose it.
Let me know in the comments what else you'd like covered.
Enjoy!!

Thanks for the really detailed info on your gear Mick. I love knowing all the little stuff about what makes better braid and leaders. I don’t own a Dobyns but u almost have me convinced 👍

There’s a lot of information that gets lost between the design of products and when they get sold to the customer… I personally thrive on all this info and want to know more and I think others do to but they just don’t have access to the info.. there is also alot of misinformation, especially on RU-vid where people talk about what they assume a feature is designed for when really it’s quite different to what they’re saying.. I’m kinda lucky in this sense that I work in the industry and contract to 3 distributors of quality tackle suppliers with a huge range of mid to high end brands and I’m fed this information so I understand the products. I’m hoping to do more of this kind of video content and get even deeper as I feel I’ve only scratched the surface in this episode, it is a start though!

I used to fish Stella's and Conquests, I now use Exists, ryogas and steez absolutely no comparison in my opinion. Your right in saying you get what you pay for once you start using high end gear you never go back.
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing 2 года назад
Yeah I tried some of the newer Daiwa reels (Certate and Ryoga) and both of them spent more time back on warranty than I got to use them in the first 6 months. Steez and Exists are finesse reels so I doubt they’d last me long either. It’s been expensive but I’ve found what holds up for me and this is it. I do have a few Daiwa reels but they excel in finesse applications.. I think shimano has the workhorses in their stable and Daiwa has the show ponies 😅🤣

Informative episode and great detail in comments. There is very little English spoken let alone Aussie info on Ocea and Calcutta conquest. Interested in your opinion, I was considering a ocea 200 conquest for light jigging for snapper in south nsw with maybe some casting, however, I have been wondering if the Calcutta conquest 100-200 could do the same job then be able to cast for dusky, bream and EP. What's your thoughts ?? what's a reasonable priced match slow/light jig rod
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing 2 года назад
Thanks mate! The Ocea Calcutta is just a conquest without the centrifugal brake, personally I feel that a 200 size will be under gunned offshore unless you’re only fishing max pe2… they’re strong enough but only a small reel hey, you’ll have to be ready to chase fish down at all times fishing it.. have a look at the Slow Element from Oceans Legacy, probably the best value for money slow pitch rod on the market and has dominated the scene for the last 2 years… also worth a look is the pe3 SW Game slow pitch, it’s a lighter, longer rod but I rate it pretty high for the finesse stuff with lighter jigs!
@mczookoz364
@mczookoz364 2 года назад
@@Micksgonefishing Thanks for helping out Mick, it's a shame the conquest is hard to come by. I checked out the Ocean Legacy and compared the, saltiga 10h/10hl, tranx and Ocea jigger 1500 on it. They strongly recommended concept tx3 which I'd never heard of (bloody light though). My bday is next month and I'm leaning towards the Calcutta conquest still and thankyou for sharing your thoughts and experiences 👌

I remove the drag stack and clean all the grease out of the washers with brake cleaner and then replace it with Daiwa DSG300 gear grease, it’s a little slower to start up but adds around 30% drag pressure, I do this to all my conquests!

Ive seen that you usually fish with fairly tight drag, how does the gearing on those calcuttas holding up? How many seasons before you replace them?
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing 2 года назад
Yeah I generally run all my BC reels close to locked up most the time, depending what I’m fishing for… before I use them they get a pre service which is just a quick once over to make sure they’re lubed in all the right places and just to be sure they’ll last a season, then once a year I give the reels a birthday and clean all the old grease out and re lube them. Gear wear is the number 1 reason I moved away from low profile reels, I was lucky to get 2 seasons out of some of my higher end low profiles and I had enough. I bought 3 of these conquests in 2016-17 and they’re all still in use with zero gear wear. The round profile reels have a lot more support not having plastic bearing housings and side plates which support the drive train resulting in a more robust reel. It’s also worth noting that I do beef up the drags in all my reels on their pre service and I can get an extra 20odd percent extra drag pressure just by cleaning out the stock drag washers and using the Daiwa DSG 300 gear grease.. so if there was going to be an issue of gear wear I’d find it pretty quickly!

@@Micksgonefishing Sadly the Conquests are not available left hand wind. Why right handers want to keep swapping hands after casting is beyond me, it's 5 mins practice to learn to crank left handed and way more efficient. Jigging might be a slightly different beast but I'd still rather fight with my strong hand.

Just discovered JDM has left handed reels in every size, so the Calcutta is an option for me. There's a new XG 7.5:1 in the 200 size, wondering what your opinion is on the usefulness of that Mick?
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing 2 года назад
I haven’t looked for a while but yeah an XG could be a good thing… it sucks that shimano forces us overseas for the niche products but the way everything is so technique specific these days that’s the way it’s going…

@@Micksgonefishing I know people who buy $50US reels that last 2-3 years. Putting that up against a $200-500US reel that lasts 5 seems a better deal, not to mention the expensive reels are hard and expensive to get parts for when they wear over time. also heard some of the more expensive reels are not built like the old models of the past. It really comes down to preference and a little luck in an inexpensive (and expensive) taking you the distance, with the inexpensive not stinging as hard when it begins to wear out. liking my chances of 4 inexpensive ones lasting longer than 1 expensive, but perhaps that is just me.

Hey mate, can you use pe1-2 spin jigging rods for estuary lure casting or is it not recommended?
@Micksgonefishing
@Micksgonefishing 2 года назад
Good question and the answer is no, of course you can try it but the super slow taper required for jigging isn’t really suitable for casting or setting hooks on a fish when the line is out horizontally.
