Carlos De Vil came from Hubba Hubba Hamstery, apart of the California Hamster Association of ethical hamster breeders here in the US who're also partnered with Ontario Hamster Club in Canada. Since Carlos has been within my care for a full year now, I share with you my journey with raising him.
* Please support ethical breeders and rescues in your area or country when looking for a pet. Unethical breeders do not care about genetics or health of an animal and will cut corners, much like pet stores here in America who are supplied by breeding mills. Let's hope for a better future by properly informing people of better choices out there and wishing that ethically bred hamsters is in our future.

I work at a pet store and can confirm. Never saw brachy hamsters before covid. We’d have one or two cases of wet tail a month. Now we see brachy Syrians once a month and at least one hamster in the back with wet tail at a given time. At the moment we have 5 hamsters in the back, four with wet tail and another who is injured. I don’t even want to talk about how often they die now. We treat them preemptively and do our best but the quality has fallen tremendously

I’m really hoping that we can get to a point where we increase their lifespan (through correct breeding and welfare ofc)!

I hope so too. Part of what makes me not want a hamster is the short lifespan… They’re not a good fit in my life anyways but if they ever were I don’t think I could emotionally handle such a short life…

I love this video! I got my babygirl Blake from an ethical breeder than actually lives in my city! Élevage Loup-Hamstery ( french name because it' s in Québec/Canada) The breeder herself gives really good advices and even makes large bin cages, sells proper sized wheels, toys and hides, she also makes sure that each pups goes to homes where they'll be treated with proper care. Sometimes I give her news about Blake and show her how happy she is in her large Niteangel cage~ Whenever I needed advice in the first 2 months of owning my hamster she always remained very professional! Blake is a black satin syrian hamster and you can clearly tell that she has good genetics! The fur is soft and silky, her teeth are well formed and her muzzle isn't smushed. Her temper also tells that she was used to handling from a young age and grew in a good non-stressful environment~ She's a very sweet and spoiled girl that I love so much

Awww he’s so adorable. I got my gerbils from an ethical breeder. You can see the difference between a pet shop and an ethical breed . They look so healthy and their coat is so glossy and soft, and they where tamed before I got the. I did have to do some work with them. They breeder was amazing he gave me lots of information.

I have an ethically bred syrian from Holmden Hill Haven! She's also the only breeder in the US with pure winter whites (fyi lol) Mine is a russian blue longhair Syrian named Yam. He was born on thanksgiving so I had to name him after Thanksgiving food! He's a dark grey color without the cheek flashes, and a little bit of white under his chin and belly. There's a bit of warm colored grey mixed within his coat too. He's very sweet, docile, friendly, and has no issues with being handled or held. He's my first hamster since childhood, so I don't really recall what my experience had been prior to that. I think I last had them in '92 or '93 when I was 10 or 11. But he's not really amped up like other hamsters I've seen, even at almost 5 months old. He's just very chill and very sweet!

I thought about getting rats from an ethical breeder for quite a while because I do think it is important to support people who care about genetics and make the species healthier over time. So far it didn't work out because there were always rescues that stole my heart.

The information you shared about Percy really interested me. Also, you talking about people putting hamsters in their bras reminded me of when I was in fifth grade one of the kids got close to me and whispered, "psst... look at this" and they had a hamster in their sweatshirt pocket. Even all these years later I still think about how it must've been so uncomfortable for the hamster and how gross it must've been for my classmate.

Carlos is so thame and big. Little gentle giant. very educational video. And i hear his chirping a little bit as he wasn't allowed to explore your back.😆 and probalbly fall... you care great for them. It's pitty how people handle them as easy kiddie pets, wondering why they are so sassy.. long rodents often seem to have massive Nuts. They just like tagged under the tail area. 🍒😆 Had two guinea boars ones. And when they where having an argument, they lift there behind to parade them around while rumbling.

My ethically bred Syrian is three years old and the oldest hamster I've ever had. He's still a happy dude! To keep him happy I had to adjust his enclosure to his needs as he grew older. It would be great if you did a video on how to decorate a hamster's enclosure as they get older. My senior citizen has a senior residence so he can still live a good life despite him being almost blind, haha🤭

I have an ethically bred hamster named Gaya, and my god she's an energy bomb (Syrian female, not a surprise heh), but she's such a good girl, and so smart too. I just love her a lot and she tells me very clearly when she wants to go out of her cage by making her little noises. I got her from this breeder in Norway that's working on becoming a certified breeder (by the Norwegian Hamster Club)(corona knocked her progress back tho). I'm pretty sure the lines aren't that far away from pet store genes yet, as she's a lot smaller than your Carlos, but she's really kind and curious. I love her to bits!!!! she's a very white silvergrey.

7:12 I just want to add kennel clubs have done tremendous harm to the German shepherd breed, they’ve changed the breed standard so they have slanted hips which leads to massive issues throughout their life and towards the end. There is no such thing as an ethical German shepherd breeder if they are breeding a dog that has any sign of slanted hips whatsoever (some hips slants are worse than others and kennel clubs do not encourage huge slants, but any slant is bad and some dogs win at kennel club shows however later have horrible walking issues due to their slanted hips so it’s just not okay at all). Obviously, some breeders are worse than others because they inbreed/ignore other health issues but again, slanted hips are never ethical. There is a reason why police dogs DO NOT have slanted hips whatsoever, which is against the kennel club breed standard but incredibly important for their health.

What comes to any pet animal from hammies and reptiles to dogs and horses there would be no homeless animals if everyone was educated enough to buy from ethical breeders. America has such over supply on homeless rescued animals that breeders in general are seen bad. I'm happy that you teach about ethical breeding, that is rare among rescue people. And yes in my country there are only few animals in animal shelter each year and almost all dogs are brought abroad from russia and ro.ania and spain. Just saying. If you want a rescue in my country you have toget it abroad. Love from Finland

I'm getting mice from ethical breeder very soon I rescued many guinea pigs in my rodent owner "career", I spent so much money on rescuing my beloved girl Mary. She only lived to 3yo as complications from pneumonia plus cancer took her away from me Pigs are social animals so I needed to get second one after Mary's death very quickly. So I went 400km to reputable breeder and got myself well bred piggy. Her conformation is amazing so far and she is only a baby piggy for now. I'm not looking back. Her parents were genetically tested for any sicknesses and through lines there werent any weak piggies You have to pay more for well bred animal, but it's worth it

I think we're looking at inbreeding depression in both pet store and ethical breeder stock (no new influx of genes from Syria in many decades now) in addition to unwise breeding choices. The European show decision to breed for unnaturally large size is one (see what's happened to the lifespans of giant breed dogs as show breeders increased their size even more), outside of that there's breeders, millers and whoever never waiting until the male is, say, a year or a year and a half old to breed him, which would go a long way in proving that he'll pass on genes for health and long lives, as well as the fact that older fathers pass on longer telemeres regardless which is conclusively linked to a longer lifespan.

My beautiful Syrian Monty is from an ethical hamster breeder in England. I found his breeder through the National Hamster Council and knew the breeder would be perfect after talking with her about her breeding practices. mine and my sisters first dogs are both working breed mixes from rescue backgrounds, given my sisters dog's mix is lab/golden crossed with chow gsd Rottweiler and pitbull we think he was probably bred to be a fighting dog, he has food aggression and strong guard dog instincts, she almost gave up and rehomed him a month after bringing him home because she kept unwittingly setting off his issues and making him think he needed to attack my dog, thankfully we got a trainer involved and she knows now that she was the one at fault and is working on his trust issues and basic training, hes 14months i believe. My dog on the other hand is one of those few 'can do no wrong' dogs, he didnt start out that way, he was a pretty typical gsd mix puppy(gsd/amstaff/boxer/husky/bloodhound), here meaning: slightly nuts and bratty at first, I remember him jumping and hanging off my arm once at 6months hes 2 years now and people always tell me what a great dog i have, i keep thinking how bad his life would've turned out if the lady with little kids had adopted him first, she did not need a husky/gsd mix with high energy, Einstein level problem solving and bad hips lol, he's what i was looking for though. I definitely think that adopting isnt for everyone, and wish more people were willing to save for well bred dogs, I intend to go the purebred route next time because my poor boy has canine ibs among other issues related to bad breeding.

my current hamster was a part of an accidental litter because my uncle had no idea his pair of russian dwarves were different sexes, I urged him to separate his pair after that. unfortunately, i do not really know about my hamster's lineage because his parents came from an unethical backyard breeder (i live in the philippines so this is sadly very normal) but I have been keeping in touch and watching a local hamster rescue very yclosely as of late as I do plan to adopt a hamster in the future rather than purchase from a breeder. The shelter I'm looking at is called "HamdoptionPH" and all their hammies are definitely rescues plus they screen and monitor the adopters before giving them the hamster they want. I’m pretty sure my hamster is too small. Got her from a pet store and I try to feed her but I’m pretty sure she is starving herself. She has untouched lab blocks in her cage from last week. As long as I can remember she’s always been small, but I got her probably around 1 month old! I’m gonna try and see if baby food will work but I really don’t want her to only want that.
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 3 года назад
It's possible it's genetics. But if you fear she's losing weight, monitor the weight on a food scale set at Grams. Also if you see side flaps where skin once was, it can be obvious that there's been weight loss. Another reason why they're not eating is due to teeth issues. I'd suggest checking the mouth to make sure the teeth are not broken, missing or too long. Bad teeth will cause them to not eat properly. If you suspect they're unwell, I'd encourage an exotic vet checkup.
@goombasmasher7393
@goombasmasher7393 3 года назад
@@MunchiesPlace I tried getting her weight once, but the scale wasn’t working properly and she wasn’t having it. She’s a ghost hamster and freaks out if I touch her or go near her. She’s very sweet only bit me once out of fear. She is chewing on her chews even her houses. I will check her teeth though when I get home to make sure! I just don’t want to stress her out too much considering she doesn’t like being handled. She is active as usual just I feel she is small for a hamster. I’m used to dwarf hamsters not Syrians. She is my first Syrian and they’re built different. Maybe I’m wrong about her weight idk. I’m so used to dwarfs looking like little puff balls lol. When she sits she looks nice and round but when she is stretched out she looks a little thin. Edit: I got home and weighed her she’s 125 grams, also her teeth look good I believe I couldn’t get a good look though because she was squirming and peed on me. I felt so bad:( Is 125 grams good weight for a female?

15:30 But anywhere that has pet stores also has rehomed hamsters originally from the pet stores that the owner couldn’t take care of anymore on Craigslist or other online selling sites, so I think it’s never acceptable to get a hamster from a pet store
@MunchiesPlace
@MunchiesPlace 3 года назад
Not everywhere. People in other countries do not have rehoming sites for animals all the time. And I've come to realize this and retracted my old statements where I say avoid stores at all costs. There are places where there is no such thing as rehoming animals or shelters and I do believe even Erin's Animals has made this clear in some of her videos where she lives, that she had to get them from a petstore. So please understand where I am coming from when I say this. I cannot tell people what to do, but I can make people more aware of the things, especially going on in the US with the pet hobby.

There isn't access to ethically bred hamsters where I live. 😭

I just wanted to share my story. Please don’t buy hamsters from Petco or Petsmart, they are not bred to survive long, it’s kind of like a carnival fish, some end up living but I think a lot of them get sick fairly quickly, and don’t make it because of poor genes and breeding. I bought a dwarf hamster from Petco about four months ago, and he immediately started losing fur, Petco took him to the vet for me and gave him back once he got better, but a couple weeks later it came back and I couldn’t see a vet for three months, so I made an appointment and put Vaseline on his dry skin and unfortunately yesterday he passed away, before he could even be seen by a vet. He was eating and drinking until the day before, he was sleeping and I was with my family that day, so when I came home I checked if he was up and he had passed. Rip snorlax. He was my first hamster and I did the best I could for him him. I felt like having him pushed me to get out of bed and I really loved him but please don’t support mills, I mainly got them because I wanted a hamster soon as I could, instead of just rescuing one, I bought one, and now I am looking to get an ethically bred hamster so I don’t go through the pain of getting close to a hamster and then immediately losing them because they get sick

How do you buy ethically bred dwarf hamsters? I only see ethical breeders for Syrian hamsters
@MunchiesPlace

There is none in America who've approached the California Hamster association. There is one but it's a private breeder, not available to the public. The nearest dwarf breeder is in Canada.

I love this video but where I live the only ethical breeder is a couple of hours away, one way. And the shelters around where I live never seems to have hamsters. So as of now all of the hamsters I have own has been from pet stores because that is the only option since the breeder is so far away from me and none of the shelters where I live have any.

I live in the UK and trying to find an ethical hamster breeder but I don't know how to tell real breeders from "breeders" I've only had pet shop hamsters and currently own a 6 month brown and white female Syrian called buttons she sadly is very skittish and currently trying bond with her

There is a girl that have really bad hamster care, but she is bigger than me and would not listen to my advice for better hamster care (her hamster hase daiariah and she thinks it’s normal, she has the starter kit hamster cage, she has a 3.5 inch wheel for a winter white hamster, her winter white hamster is skinny, she throws it on her bed, she gives 1 inch of bedding, she sais that she does not care for him because in a month he’s gonna die, she never did a health check, she wakes her hamster up in the day to just throw him, she keeps the food bowl always filled, and the water bottle almost empty. She never cleans her hamster cage, etc… 😭😡🐹💔
