As a 6'9" Marine that packed that exact Allis pack in the Military. I applaud you for doing it voluntarily. I'm sure you notice a substantial difference between a more modern pack and this beast from years past. I'm looking at gearing up for my own week long trip on the IAT. I was tempted to use my old Alis pack, but I'm afraid it may give me too many nightmares. lol
Great hike! Thanks for sharing! I just recently moved to the Green Bay Area and have been looking all over the Internet for good places to go backpacking in Wisconsin, t I've looked at the Ice Age Trail, Nicolet National Forest North Country Scenic Trail Jones Springs Management area... I have traveled through the black River's Falls area looks really nice! Your breakfast burritos looked awesome!
Thanks for your kind words. I want to try Pictured Rocks Trail in UP Michigan on Lake Superior. I haven't done it yet but it looks beautiful. The North Country Trail has a challenge this year, that if you hike 100 miles you get a patch.
oc6088 sounds great! Yes I've also looked at the Lake Superior Trail especially around the Porcupine Mountains area and that Carp River Trail looks amazing with those views!
My pack was heavy! I didn't want to buy a bunch of stuff until I knew I would stick with it. Hiking alone is tough but you really feel great once you are done.
@@lindahikes2760 I'm preparing for my first solo overnight hike at Big Bend National Park. I'm using you for inspiration! I, too, decided not to invest a lot of money in ultralight gear. Now struggling between 27-32# pack, mainly due to water. Big Bend has no guarantee of a water source for purifying. Thanks for posting your hike!
It's a great place to hike but you may want to wait when the wood ticks aren't so bad. Every time I stopped, I had at least 6 on my legs/feet. Even using deet. Maybe fall or early spring would be better. I hike a lot around SW Wis/MN and I they aren't nearly as bad anywhere else.
I live near there and hit BRSF all the time. The ticks can be a little rough in summer. I usually do ridge, north, and central trail. Where did you camp? Just anywhere? I am going to camp more there this summer. Great video!
Officially you can backpack camp anywhere. You are supposed to fill out a form (online) if you are backpacking and leave it on your car and carry one with you. This trip I camped down the side trail/outlook off of Wildcat. Second night I camped off of North trail. I usually spend more time in the winter there cross country skiing. It has some of the best skiing in Wisconsin in my opinion.
Holy smokes that pack load for a 2 day hike. I like your style though, it's nice to enjoy real food instead of subsisting on granola bars & jerky. Thanks for sharing!
I know it was crazy! It was my first backpack trip ever. I borrowed a bunch of stuff. All decades old. All heavy. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money until I knew I would like backpacking. Although my weight has come down, I still bring heavy/real food...at least for the first couple of days. Thanks for watching.
oc6088 I once hiked the Hoh River trail up to blue glacier in Olympic National Park with a standard issue military duffle bag. Suffice to say mistakes were made. From one backpacker to another... never stop exploring!
True. There's a water pump at the parking lot..but not sure when it is turned on. But no streams/rivers anywhere even though it's called "Black River Forest". :)
