Some might say, "paranoid" or "overkill", but to me it brings back the oldest saying in the book. "Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it"... Great stuff John. Thanks!
I really like this mans work. He is practical, well prepared and well thought out. I have had a CCW for 8 years but do not carry. After the horrid events in Texas and Nevada of the last few weeks and days, I resolve to carry my firearm concealed. I resolve to go to the range and re-familiarize myself with my pistols. I live in Ohio and can easily wear a jacket for 9 months of the year, greatly reducing the problems I might encounter with appendix carry. Lots of courses offered around here. Thank you John and Active Self Protection for your work.
Oh, but if you don't let in the drug dealers, sponsor the felons, enable the abusers, and let the thieves take everything away from you...you aren't a loving or accepting citizen! LOL
You're lucky you live in a free state. In California, we can only carry a wallet with our Driver's License so the police can easily identify our body and contact our loved ones after an encounter with criminals. The state is more concerned with a criminal's right to commit crimes than a law abiding citizen's right to defend themselves. Almost forgot, you can also carry a cell phone so you can call the police for help after you've been murdered by a criminal.
New subscriber. Great content. Love that you are a pastor and that you stress spiritual preparedness in your vids. Strong relationship with Jesus is the best EDC!
Just ordered one after watching his videos! Fox Labs 1.5 oz flip top cone spray because it claims to be the strongest concentration I could find on Amazon, with a belt clip holster, although I kind of wish the spray had a clip like John's, but we'll see how it fits in with the rest of my EDC.. I almost ordered one of the Mace brand pepper sprays that look like his with the grip, but use a formula of the pepper concentrate, plus tear gas, and dye of some kind to mark the attacker for positive identification by police. I recently disposed of a small spray with velcro attachment for my bicycle that had the twist top actuator that you see on all of the brands found readily in stores, and i just dont feel safe carrying that in a pocket or on my belt, and I wish they would all use the flip top cover
Showing us after a day of moving furniture is a big brain move. That shows how you can carry all you do and be active and even working hard physically no problem with all your EDC.
My edc: ONLY item in Rt pocket: my Shield9 Viridian green laser in a multi-option deSantis pocket-tuk.Cap.10+1.147gr.rangr. Shield disappears in pocket, iwb, apex, etc. All personal preference. Be safe. Good video for options/ choices.
It's interesting seeing how your EDC has evolved John. Now you have first aid items, and pepper spray, but no spare mag because you trust your weapon and its mag. Pepper spray is wise, but I think you underrate the value of a flashlight as a weapon. Maybe if you were walking down more dark streets, you'd carry a bigger, more tactical flashlight. I think it's a must for ladies walking home at night. What scares me is how few ccw holders seem to have a non-lethal weapon. To me, carrying an unaccompanied handgun is as stupid as pointing the gun in the wrong direction. It can get you into serious trouble. It's like having a big missile and no soldiers to defend it, so you're tempted to shoot it unnecessarily when the enemy says "boo". My point has been proven on several of your videos with "defenders" certainly going to jail and probably never getting a firearm licence again. How counter-productive! Pepper spray now seems an essential item for protecting you and your gun in uncertain situations. I'm so glad you promote its use! It's legal where I am, but not in many countries I know.
It takes so much responsibility having a carry license, takes timing patience, observational awareness, vigilance, common sense, quickness, situational awareness, and many more things so it's nice to be in the place where you don't have to carry one
Good advice.also it's good to carry stung gun, because if some is on some type of drug,or is not allergic to mace or pepper spray it won't have no effect on perpetrator.thanks.
i've carried the Fenix PD32 (max 900 lumens) for a little over a year now and it works fantastic, lights up huge areas like daytime and is perfect to EDC.
John would you be able to do a video series for people who are new to conceal carry and some tips you would have for them? Things such as pistol choice, holster, types of training to pursue initially, and some general tips.
Smith an Wesson border guard knife. Tac force speedster kife. Leo oc-pepper spray. Xd9 4inch. two 16rd. Mags High intense led stobe. Flsh light. seeking funds taser. Non lethal. PO3 USN vet. 00-04 Myself Big THANK YOU for your service an dedication.
John, something to think about... I know someone who carries a tertiary mag in their ankle med kit. I wonder if you might consider doing this with a secondary mag because you are not concerned with needing a mag quickly, but it would be better than having nothing, and could be helpful for topping the gun off should you have to fire. Just a suggestion, I hope you are well.
Ian Finch Why? When has ANYONE ever need a spare mag in a civilian shooting??? ANSWER: Never. The whole spare mag dogma is pure BS. I've never in 100's of thousands rounds had a failure of any mag I EDC. As a soldier and LEO who has had to use his sidearm with lethal consequence in both professions. I've never had to reload or had an issue with a mag during an encounter.
The main reason i carry a backup mag is in the (unlikely, yet possible) event i'm out with family at the mall or eating or watching a movie or somewhere i may have to hunker down behind cover--or simply be trapped in a corner. I want to make sure i'm able to stay active in the time it takes first responders to arrive.
Rick Faulkner Ok...tell when the last time a civilian had to do what you're describing. statistically it doesn't add up. if you're carrying a firearm that holds 8 rounds or more you've got plenty of ammo. training is what you need not spare mags. If you train and train properly and train under duress then you'll be able to make those shots when they count and you won't be wasting ammo which is what a spare magazine promotes. we've seen it too many times on the Range when we take away their spare magazines accuracy goes up when they're allowed to carry a spare magazine they have the mentality that I have plenty of ammo I have extra ammo so therefore I can not be quite as accurate.
I am pretty sure that John will dis approve or not favor, however I have carried safely and confidently with a Smart Carry holster since the early 90's. Works great with Shield size guns and smaller for me, others may be able to carry full size. I like the holster so much that I also use it to carry appendix when not tucked in. Like John, I also wear an undershirt.
Oh the comments..yea he carries a lot of things, why are people concerned what another man feels necessary to carry? If you don't want to carry a gun, light, knife, and med kit..dont. If you do, do. To each his own. All I have to say is: if things go down, I want him around.
My edc carry : Smith n Wesson folding knife Flashlight Bic lighter. I don't smoke Tiny pry bar Wallet $50 💸 Fingernails Clippers And last my glock 19 with 2 extra magazines. Gives me a total of 46 rounds.
I only carry an extra mag for my hiking setup. I live in Alaska so you gotta have something for bears while outdoors. The holster I have for my 1911 comes with an pocket for an extra mag. 9 in the gun and 7 rounds in the reserve magazine.
I guess we can use a baton at home if there was an intruder. any knife over 2.5 inches or any blade that locks (e.g. 'switchblade') in public, thats illegal, unless it is not easily accessed when on ones person/baggage e.g. a box within a box, If i remember correctly. So you cant access it when you might react to a situation. Even a swiss army knife the police would frown on if they stop you... Anyone who owns a gun e.g. for hunting needs to make it safe for transport (i.e remove shooting pin, no bullets etc), at home needs to be in a lockable gun cabinet, otherwise its a criminal offence. Its almost become illegal to defend yourself, so it seems! Which is why self defence is quite popular in uk, from krag maga to kung fu.
get a tactical pen or any pen that is very well built and metal in all or most components. I seen a guy get stabbed with a wooden pencil, let me tell you that was not pretty and if it would have been a pen it would of been worst.
100% on the carrying of a flash light. I've been followed by cars while walking around my own neighborhood. Using a flashlight at their face was a way better scenario to drive them off than a gun. Obviously waited many many seconds being followed and most times more than 1 encounter.
Onix Junes I own two of them but wear them on the front. My older one (Uncle Mikes Sidekick) is Velcro and the noise always worries me in a close up draw when bad guy is distracted. The second is a 5.11 Select Carry Pistol Pouch with Hot-Pull tabs.
The spare mag isn't for extra ammo. It's for when you have a malfunction with your primary. "I'm not worried about a malfunction." Famous last words. What can go wrong will go wrong. That's why people carry in the first place. But to each his own. John you should look at the GCode Incog IWB holster system. Or just get the Eclipse version and add their IWB mag carrier on the belt next to it. Either setup are good options.
what's the trick for carrying appendix ? im rockn n the extra 40lb tactical muffin top , how do you sit down without the gun jamming you in the gut and not insanely print ? .. can we get a private video for fat guys ? lol ..but seriously I need some tips
Just pull your holster up a bit when you sit down Josh. The gun should almost sit on your abdomen instead of your waist (only while sitting though.) Feels strange at first but at least it's not digging into you.
Larry Tew seems his pants are 12 sizes too big for him in that video and John always wears normal to loose but not baggy clothes .. might be the same idea ,I don't know , curious to hear it from John .. thanks for the link ! cool video
I wish i could appendix carry but o had it removed when i was a teen when i got sick. So now i 3 to 4o'clock carry since my loss. Never give up, love the vids!!
Love seeing the PD35! I exclusively use the older 32 special edition 750 lumen and the exact same first gen 35. Fenix has better spill wo sacrificing throw and somehow manages to get way better battery life then everyone else. Couple items to note... I carry my flashlight in my non draw rear pocket.. when shoved all the way to the outside edge you don’t sit on it. I also carry my knife in my front non draw.. both items I want to be able to access w non draw side.. if I’m hands on and fighting to keep someone from taking my gun off me I want access to the knife as a secondary close quarters option. The light I want non draw side as well for obvious reasons even though I normally have a gun mounted light. As for spare mag... look into the elastic tourniquet belt holder.. holds any size or type mag horizontal in line with your belt. I have to say I strongly believe In not only a spare mag but also a backup gun with spare mag as well. I subscribe to the 2 is 1 and 1 is none philosophy. Many may see it as overkill but just last weekend I had to leave my kids and wife on a street side bench late at night while I went to get the car. My wife who also carries has a very bad habit of not carrying when she’s with me. By having a backup I was able to leave it with her till I got back. More so then that I also spend a lot of time around other permit holders who like most don’t carry daily. I like being able to arm someone else as a force multiplier in a very worst case scenario like say an active shooter. If nothing else I like having a backup Incase my main malfunctions. Also most engagements are likely to be in arms reach and if hands on and in a position I can’t draw my main I like having options.. I’m already in the .01% range just by simply carrying a gun why not be prepared for the other .01% of engagements where you could have a malfunction or need a more then 15 rounds? Again I know I’m that odd guy overly prepared for something that will never happen... but... What if it does?
You're ready for action John, spent your whole life on high alert ready to neutralize any threat, and because of that you'll never be put in the situation you've spent your life preparing for. Instead it'll be some 60 year old unarmed woman who's never had to think about defending herself, lol funny how the world works.
I love this channel and the lifesaving knowledge it shares. I love the host and believe his integrity. STILL! I can't help but chuckle and roll my eyes (jus'a lil' bit) at Brutus-type martial arts guys who could rip your head off with bare hands yet still feel the need to portage an armory everywhere they go, on the off-chance they might have an intensely bad day. I've carried a knife on occasion, but I prefer verbal judo because it's much sharper than any blade. Also, to not be unable to leave the house without first filling your pockets with dangerous toys? Damn, dude! Let the fear go. 💘🙈🙉🙊💋
+Active Self Protection Extra I chose quit wearing safety belt because I refuse to be bullied by Death, tho sometimes I still reach for it because old bad habits die hard. Anyhow, I'm not here to troll you, bud. I do enjoy your videos, regardless our difference in philosophy.
how many rounds do you guys have thru those guns ? I have two of them both back at Taurus for warranty repair right now , both broke the trigger bar around 700 rounds, totally dead trigger and the slide wont come off , no warning, just broke
I had a trigger pin break on the TCP738 after 150 rounds and did a review on it. A dead trigger on a carry gun is unacceptable. When I replaced the part it was clearly made of pot metal, complete junk. I also had a PT111 G2 which was perfect through 2,500 rounds but I sold it and will never own another Taurus.
This video made me realize my right hand is my dominant that I use for everything, except being on my phone. It is so weird I never noticed I keep my phone and touch it all on my non-dom side. Funny. Also, my dude fux with the G-2 Pilot pens. Those are God's gift to the writing world.
I am a 3rd degree black belt in TKD (not Olympic) and I have dabbled in many different styles, including MMA, but my main goal was self defense by small and weaker people, especially women. I have been out of the scene for about 8 years since I had my 2 kiddos but I do understand the importance of awareness and self defense. I want to get back into it and teach my kids the importance of it. Thank you for taking the time to do all of these videos! There are many people who benefit from them.
Great video! You talk about operating the cell phone while having a firearm drawn. Bad idea - your might sympathetic squeeze the wrong hand. And I credit you John with teaching us that. Nobody's coming to help you, you are your own agent during the gunfight, there is no need to call the police in the middle of an incident. If anybody else is around, then direct them to make the phone call.
@@ASPextra Interesting. I hope that call is recorded for your audience if you ever do get into that situation. Better yet, I hope it's caught on surveillance cams and Mike could narrate it on the channel!
Your video really made me think. I've been carrying a firearm since I turned 21, I'm 34 now. I've never liked the idea of carrying OC, especially while carrying a gun because I don't want the OC to elevate the situation and my use of force. I have a private security background and I've seen OC fail to stop the threat too many times. I've even seen it have no effect on a somewhat regular basis. Things are happening and the world is changing. You made some really good logical arguments for OC. I will definitely be rethinking my EDC system
Good edc. The pepper spray is a good idea. Don’t want to draw fire arm unless it’s absolutely necessary. And yes if I carry a gun than using a knife is just absolutely unnecessary.
Good video and well presented. For me, I'd change the pen to an aluminium type pen that could also be used as an impact weapon, DNA collector or Kubotan. The other thing I would recommend is to carry the knife on the right side, just in case your dominant hand is busy keeping the bad guy from grabbing your gun. A knife in the thigh of a bad guy could be just what the doctor ordered! I really loved your IFAK carry method. Simply brilliant! Thanks for making these videos. Like you, I live in AZ, up in the high country.
First thing John thank you for your service, In the army you are out of uniform if you don't have a pen on you and I am the same way with my phone, I am right handed so it stays in my left Pocket. Love your EDC, I have even tried putting my spare magazine in my pocket. Sometimes it works other times I have to use my magazine holder. I will say I think your knife is a defencive tool, I carry the sog Gambit just in case I get taken down and for some reason can't get to my gun or if I am fighting to keep them from getting it.
Nice job with your edc . I never thought of the pepper spray . Now I'm gonna add that to mine I do want to suggest that u find a way to carry that extra mag. Get single mag holster. Or mag pouch. . .. put it on your hip. U just never know. If or when u will need it. Thankx for the videos. They have made me look at edc in a hole different way.
I'm not so skinny anymore and I carry 1pm appendix also. I enjoy it, it's very comfortable. Hey man, awesome video interesting way to fight smarter and make EDC practical to load out.
Preparedness and comfort are important, but so are local customs and norms: someone dressed out of the norm may be a target because they look different. I live in a medium sized city with a large state university at its core, in the mid-western US at the base of the Rockies. Dressing in a way that might be the norm on either coast would draw attention to you pretty quickly...unless you look 19 and are anywhere on campus, if that's the case wear whatever, you'll blend right in.
And last but not least, if you look out my window you'll see my m1a2 Sep v.4 super abrams I use to pull my 48 footer trailer to haul my apache chopper since you don't know when you are going to face multiple attackers and that's how you cover your asp. Lol besides all jokes I am a subscriber to your channel I like how you always talk about situational awareness. I grew up in the outskirts of Buenos Aires Argentina and situational awareness is a key to get out of the hot zone. Awo: a way out always look for that. I am surprised how many people live in this bubble thinking that nothing will ever happen to them. Something simple like two dudes in a bike motorcycle is a big red flag at least where I am from. Have a blessed day.
When the vid began I immediately picked that you carry appendix because you were imprinting. In my state (Massachusetts) we can't have any imprinting. Most LTC folks I know of carry mini to avoid imprinting. Wish we didn't have to. Great info. Love the vids. I'm a pastor too. :-)
Great video... I'm not sure if I missed it another important point is keeping your wallet in your support pocket so that when you're at the store paying for something you don't show your gun or if you have to show your id for some reason it's good to keep your wallet on the support side.
I really like the HK P30 SKS (V3). It’s comfortable to carry and shoots extremely well. I also carry an extra magazine. I carry either as a cross draw or at the 330 position. Appendix carry just scares the heck out of me.
FarWalker I was worried about it too for a month or two. But once I realized the gun wasn't going to go off unless less I pulled the trigger I got over it and trained more. Its so much more comfortable and practical. I'll never go back.
Michael Glenn I’m not sure training is sufficient. I have carried concealed for over 30 years. The femoral artery is just too close for comfort and considering you can bleed out in a few minutes it’s just not worth the risk to me. I just can’t violate one of the prime rules of gun safety - never point a gun at something you don’t intend to destroy. Even to this day I cringe when someone points a gun in my direction that I know is unloaded. It’s just reflex. For those folks that are comfortable with appendix carry I hope you always have a TQ on your person as part of your EDC.
I run a Glock 36 itwb with spare 7 round mag left side belt and streamlight flashlight left side front and pocket knife right side front wallet left rear and keys right rear with riggers belt
My EDC ; cargo pants, Merrell hikers, t-shirt, tactical belt, wallet, Fox karambit, Beretta Nano 9mm. a kubaton sideways in my belt and 40 yrs martial arts experience.
Started carrying flash lites before it was cool. Reason? I had a Sh-- Box car and it had no interior lights at all. So I started always having a flash lite and becoming obsessed with them. Then came EDC and I fit in and wasn't the weirdo that carried a flashlight in the day time
