Back in the day I used to EDC my Glock 22 un-chambered and I was able to successfully draw, rack, and hit one of my targets during a attempted robbery. When hindsight kicked in shortly after the incident I realized that the circumstances that allowed me to do so were one of a kind and very unique, and if it weren’t for those particular circumstances, then I probably wouldn’t be alive today. That’s the day that I started caring in one in the chamber.

I love listening these guys who have been operating for years. The level of detail that you get from Unit guys is fascinating. I watched a video of Larry Vickers (a couple of generations behind Kyle) and they both share the same detail (Larry was describing bolting a king-size mag-lite on a MP5 back in the day). Their parallel assessment and evaluation of a tool (in this case a red dot vs the mag-lite) really shows the level of investment these men had in their trade and the advancement of technology. We had a 1SG in 3rd Rangers (Pat Hurley, RIP) who had spent years in the Unit and returned to the Regiment. The man was a wealth of knowledge. He'd walk behind a young 20 year-old fire team leader clearing a room and drop these small pearls of wisdom that saved lives. Proud to be an American and proud of these men who stood the line for our freedom and our children's safety. Thanks to you too Shawn, for the same reasons, your podcasts are excellent. Sua Sponte.

Long story short, growing up in Chicago and being deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan has definitely taught me how important preparation is. But my therapist had the audacity to hint that I am being paranoid and shouldn’t carry a firearm… I stood ground and told her that it’s better to have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it. Dot on a pistol is no different than a dot on a rifle in terms of reliability. It’s much different between a dot on a pistol and a dot on a rifle. A pistol dot rides back on forth on the slide subjecting it to much more than the recoil impulse from a rifle. A robust proven dot on a pistol is mandatory if you are gonna trust your life with it. A rifle is not nearly as hard on a red dot

When it is time to pull peoples nerves will make their hands flippers so clean draw and protected trigger is not guaranteed. A red dot should have a big coin cell or two loaded from top without having to change zero. Body should be chunky and light made out of titanium and sight glass is two thick sapphire crystals coated and sandwiched together. If the above red dot does not exist hit me up and we will build the world standard red dot. Also, we will make a nice belt that is a tourniquet, restraints, money holder, handcuff key, and spade knife without looking like anything but a belt. Or just a belt that is a tourniquet. Also, 10mm is great against light body armour, shooting into vehicles, etc. Plus let someone wear a best that takes and stops a 10mm. I bet their will be enough time to put another couple 10 mm’s on target before recovering from absorbing the impact of a 10mm and returning accurately fire back.

"If I take my gun out, my everyday carry gun, I'm killing someone...It's not there for me to de-escalate." Hot damn, some sobering words. I wish more people had this mindset and understood the implications of it. So great to have that reality check by a true professional who has the experience and understanding of the gravity of making such a decision.

Shawn asks, "What do you tell beginners who don't like carrying one in the pipe?" Kyle replies, "I tell you - that's a dead man's gun." I imagine he actually knows from first-hand experience throughout all his deployments... he's likely seen an enemy combatant attempting to hurriedly chamber a round (and knows how that worked out for that enemy combatant).

Kyle spitting 100% truth on EDC! I know people who won't carry with one in the pipe..i've told them that very thing "You'd be dead before you could identify the threat, pull, rack, present, and crack off a round". Train....it's what will make you comfortable carrying, clearing cloth, and presenting.

Those people are the worst. And anytime you bring it up to them they always insist they have the ability to get it out, rack it and shoot before no matter the situation they would find themself in.

I was expecting him to say sig. I like the extra sliver of barrel length the 43x brings to the table that most compact 9s don’t have. Keeps the 9 ballistics from eroding to bad.

Absolutely spot on interview. I think everyone who carries a weapon, as I do, should watch this interview. Particularly compelling was the “conversation with yourself” part. When I started carrying I found myself reflecting on the realities of the responsibility of possibly using deadly force. For me the imprimatur was I carry for three reasons; 1) to protect my life and the lives of my family, 2) to defend the lives of the innocent, and 3) to assist LEOs under assault. When I arrived at those rationales I realized that I had effectively removed the mystery of making a life altering decision. Great interview Shawn! Bravo Zulu shipmate.

This guy isn’t the best “public speaker” but he’s EXACTLY the type of human being I would pay good money to train me. Hes cool, he’s calm, he’s extremely introspective and he’s had all the experiences one needs to share his tactics with others. Can’t wait to watch this dude grow in this space should he choose to.

To me that's one of the things that just make him more endearing - he's just like me in that regard. Sometimes I have good, pertinent info to share but I'm not the best at knowing which words to use to impart it to others. But unlike me, he's chock full of good experience and he DOES manage to tell you what he wants you to know.
