After graduating beauty school I found an experienced hairstylist at a local salon that was willing to train me. During my two years as her assistant I learned everything I needed to be a successful career hairstylist.
Beyond color theory and cutting skills, I also learned the important interpersonal skills necessary to manage clients. In my opinion if you want to truly experience what a hairstyling career entails you absolutely need to assist for a minimum of 18 months. Don't overlook this important time to learn the foundational skills to building your own clientele.
