I discuss how I approached photographing Puffins and show video and photographs (including my favourite 3) from my experience. I spent many hours observing these birds over two days and on the second day I faced very challenging conditions for bird photography with persistent heavy rain and strong winds. It was fantastic to see the Puffins in their natural environment and to witness some of the tough weather they encounter.
Bird photography with the Fuji XF 150-600mm F5.6-8 R LM OIS WR lens on my Fuji X-T3.

Great video showing joy of observing these special birds. We had a failed attempt to see the Puffins on the Isle of May but the boat was cancelled. Will have to wait till next year when they return.

Nice review Wayne and epic photos. I have an X-T4 combined with the 70-300 which is working fantastic, particularly for outdoor sports and environmental wildlife shots. Eventually, I'll probably get a longer lens to partner it and both the Fuji 150-600 and the Tamron 150-500 look great. How does the 150-600 perform for panning on video with the X-T3 compared to the X-T4 cause I do hybrid shooting for surfing? Thanks

Thanks very much. I'm afraid I can't give you a direct answer as I haven't done any head to head comparisons between the two cameras. I've used the X-T3 more and it has always worked well for me, the times I used the X-T4 with the lens I didn't notice any issues. Sorry I can't help more but I haven't done comparisons to give a more meaningful answer.

Great shooting! Do you have a list of your photography and video settings anywhere? I have the same kit, but I'm not very experienced.

Thanks very much! I’m afraid I don’t have anything covering such settings, I change them quite a bit depending on the situation. There should be some guides out there though.

Great video. I also have the xt3 but on 100-400. I love this combo for wildlife and sports. Ive been contemplating a lot if I should get the xh2s or the 150-600mm since I only have a budget for one. Xt3 battery life is a horrible although I have a couple of them its still very inconvenient to change every 200-300shots. On the other hand 100-400 is soft at 400m, so I have this set to f8 or f9. The only thing holding me back on getting the 150-600mm is portability. I would like hear your thoughts seeing that you also previously own the 100-400. X2hs on 100-400 or xt3 on 150-600mm🤔🤔🤔

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed my video! As for your question, ignoring aperture and build differences between the lenses, here is what I’d consider. If I was generally happy with my XT3 performance for my needs but felt I could use longer focal length I’d go with the XF 150-600mm. However if I was generally happy with subject size in my frame and wanted the best AF for fast moving subjects I’d choose the XH2S. That’s how I would consider things but please make your own choice 👍🏻 I may have a video about the XH2S on my channel in the coming weeks …

Check out the Tamron 150-500. I love it with my xt-3. About as compact as the Fuji 100-400, a little heavier with the extra reach, 2/3 stops faster than 150-600. Better min focus / magnification at almost half the cost.

Thank you for the great insights and production work. I appreciate your hardwork and your spirit for photography! Great little docu-story on a number of levels. Your attitude always seeems to remain steadfast even with soggy socks and feet, ha! Very beautiful shots captured and, I would venture to guess that your video footage is useful for other things going forward, as well. Are you using a 1.4 or 2x extender with the lens? Or, is a 1.4 x bu ilt into the lens itself like the Olympus 150-400? Also, I know that you are using KASE filters...Do you purchase the larger size so that you don't experience any uneven lighing on the edges? Thanks Wayne...Can I buy you a cup of coffee to warm the insides?

Thank you very much for your kind comments and coffee donation! I’m heading out on a shoot tomorrow morning so I will definitely treat myself to a coffee afterwards. It was definitely a tough day for photography but it was one that I really enjoyed and I’m happy that I managed to get some nice photographs too; I’m glad you like them also. As for my lens I’m using it without any TC and it doesn’t have one built in. I previously owned a 1.4 TC for my 100-400mm lens but sold both to help with the purchase of this lens. I find that most of the time I don’t need one with this lens but I don’t rule out getting another 1.4 TC in the future but it would only be for very specific situations (mostly fairly static subjects). Regarding filters I do own larger filters than I technically require; this is to eliminate vignetting when I use two filters at once. I hope that helps. Thanks again for your interest in my photography and your donation - I look forward to a nice coffee later tomorrow!
