I'm on Bootmod3 stage 2, stock crankhub...Every time I drive spirited, I always drive it in manual. The kickdown is what get a lot of people in trouble. The crankhub issue has been hyped and made into a bigger issue than it is by the shops that perform this service. You have people with completely stock cars doing the crankhub. Spending over 3k on a motor that's only making 425 HP stock. Crankhub becomes an issue on E85 levels (600 HP or more). But this motor can easily take 550-570 hp without issues.

Yep, 100% agree on all counts brother and I wouldn't be worried about going to stage 2 on a stock crank hub either (looking forward to getting bm3 soon actually).

Here from Cali, been keeping my eyes on an F80 for almost a year and plan to get one within the next 3 months. When I do, probably within the first 3-4 months of ownership I will be doing crankhub. I do it for the peace of mind, considering I do not want to take a single risk especially because I do plan to tune as I did with my current car. Luckily, a 6 hour drive to LA and only (I say only due to the fact most are 3-4K) $2k done from a shop that is literally named after the S55 motor haha. They also include tons of new gaskets and general maintenance. For the price and my position, I can justify it. Great video ! I just recently came across your channel and am happy to see a youtuber with a manual F80, it's not as common as I'd hoped..

What's up brother.. thanks so much 🍻 yeah at 2k for the crankhub, I wouldn't say no to that either.. that's a great price. I don't plan on ever selling mine (if I don't give in and trade for an mkiv supra before I can afford both haha) so I'll probably end up doing the ch at some point. Good luck on getting your F80.. so many good ones out there right now. I know the DCT is a great transmission but manual is the only way to fly imo.

Yes the crankhub is a problem, but as an ex BMW mechanic I can tell you this the crankhub has never been an issue in Malaysia not 1 car has ever had a spun crankhub, but from my knowledge of BMW quality and after looking a few crankhubs, because people who track their cars do change them. It depends on cost, how you drive and your stomach because 1. In the US I know it's expensive so it is a big consideration 2.If you don't know a specialist workshop or a good workshop who can do it don't you're better of not doing it 3.If you don't drive like a lunatic you'll for most part be fine 4.A huge point to buy it is peace of mind it is not like E9X generation as you said. This would be my advice 510hp is the limit if you're going more than that get it done, if you have a stock car but drive like a lunatic ie like me get it done, other than this everyone else should be fine without getting it done 🧐

BTW it's one of the first things I'd do when I get my car granted it costs way less to get it here especially since I would get the special ex employee discount 😂 around 1300USD for me and normal price around 1700USD, I also drive like a lunatic and speeding rules in Malaysia are very very very loose not matter how much above the speed limit double or triple the speed limit the fine is only about 70USD and there's no points system here so you can get as many tickets as you want. DO DRIVE SAFELY EVERYONE

Appreciate you chiming on this bro.. all good points. So you're in the 500hp camp too huh? Interesting. Got me rethinking it lol. Well I definitely don't drive too insanely (we'll call it spirited 😏) - I guess the real determining factor for me would be if I started tracking my car.

There is no revision to the crank hub for any year 2014 through 2020 so that statement about LCI being less susceptible vs pre LCI is completely false. The M4 GTS which came out in 2015/2016 which makes It "pre LCI" and it puts down 500hp from the factory with water injection and also uses the exact same engine as all the base/comp/CS M3's, M4's and M2CS. Also, on stock cars it appears the hub typically spins very early on, so the consensus is if it's stock and hasn't spun in the 1st 5-10k miles it becomes very unlikely to happen unless you do something stupid like money shift. Now if you're tuned and pushing more than the engine is spec'd to push, of course you're going to have issues. If you're going to tune your car beyond the limit which we know for a fact is 500hp then you assume the risk of failure and should take precaution.. On a stock car or a CS/GTS tune you should be fine, save that $4k and put it towards your car payment or buy some new wheels lol.

*no revision to the crank hub for any year* yeah this is one of those rumors that floated around; plausible as most spun crank hubs _seemed_ more common in earlier model years but there was never any official confirmation; should have mentioned that. *which we know for a fact is 500hp* how do we know that's fact? I've seen a lot of numbers thrown around as the limit (700 being commonly cited). But even that seems like a rough estimation at best. *or buy some new wheels* haha you're not wrong 🍻

You should invest in AGA Tools' drain plugs. Easy oil change without any mess 😁

Never heard of that, but definitely looks like a slick alternative.. I might have to give this a whirl. Thanks for the heads up! 🍻

I’m high mileage and have down pipe and I’m going stage 1 do you think mileage increases the Chance of it spinning??
@jgo.m3
@jgo.m3 7 месяцев назад
I don't recall seeing anything which suggested mileage played a role (at least not a major one) but I think it depends. If the car has been well cared for/maintained and not driven excessively hard, I wouldn't have any concerns about downpipes and a stage 1 tune.
