This was a rare year where ALL 5 directors directed the 5 BP nominees. Yes this WAS Joan's last time presenting an Oscar (what a class act!!). She continued to attend until the end of the decade and can be glimpsed in the audience in subsequent clips. She may have stopped attending in the early 70's when the focus was on Youth and Old Hollywood was temporarily forgotten (like current times). Sadly she would be part of a memorial tribute the very year the Academy celebrated its nostalgic 50th.

I remember in a documentary about Joan Crawford, where Betsy Palmer described her first meeting with Joan. She said she was a small woman (5' 3") with a rather large head for her body. She added "She was small, but oh was she mighty". After watching this clip of Joan walking onto stage I can see what she meant. She had short legs. I love Crawford because she reinvented herself time after time and self-educated herself too. She started out as a Flapper in the 1920's, then Shop Girl in the early 1930s, then sophisticated women roles in the middle to late 1930's, etc, etc, etc. With all the harm "Mommie Dearest" did to her image and reputation, I wonder if it had not been published and made into a movie, would anyone remember or still be as interested in her, as people are to this very day?
@OlgaLevin
@OlgaLevin 9 лет назад
+JEFF KIPER What Mommy Dearest showed is just her imperfect side. This is evident of everyone. I didn't ruin her image to me, it just showed me that there was an actress who had complications in her personality like we all do. It may not have played out so well for Christina Crawford, she may have had a hard time dealing with her mother, but that's really what it all boils down to. I'm sure that years from now, we'll be hearing about all of the not so pretty dark moment's about the Jolie-Pitt's.

Joan Crawford was human. For all the shit about her being a movie star robot she was in fact, impossibly human. That is what draws people to her that bother to learn anything past the wire hangers garbage. Would have been a challenging childhood but no well rounded human being should have not somehow been better for it. Discipline and personal responsibility is not a bad thing. "She was obviously superficial, but deep; selfish, but very generous; unschooled, but with a brilliant mind; and a monstrous bitch with the heart and soul of an angel."

The biggest laugh was on Bette Davis when she failed to be nominated for Hush Hush, which received seven nominations (2 more than Baby Jane). This after Davis had gone above and beyond to make Joan miserable on the Hush set (and also in a bid to dominate over her as well) and thus ruining the potential greatness the film could've achieved. But Davis finds herself completely shut out come Awards time and here is Joan looking absolutely stunning, receiving a thunderous ovation and her dear friend George Cukor winning.

What I find funny is that the two musicals have contrasting songs in them. Basically Poppins' A Spoon full of Sugar is contrasted with My Fair Lady's With a Little bit of Luck. One is sun by Mary instructing the Banks children, Jane and Michael to tidy up the nursery. But even though the task is daunting, with a good attitude, it can still be fun. The other is sung by Alfred P. Dolittle about a list of everyday situations which one finds themselves in, and a desire to take the easy way out as "With a Little Bit of Luck" one's fate might change, thus avoiding any responsibility.

That’s because you’re thinking with a 2024 mind , Try to go back for 70 years and think how Hollywood betrayed her because she was the beautiful actress. Not a good one event. Is it worth it, at some point, you are the beautiful girl in the world who makes all movies and from A moment to another, you are zero, nothing but an old movie star who can’t act anymore because you’re not as beautiful and young as you used to be in your 20’s . Don’t get me wrong, she wasn’t the best actress in the world of course, but she was good really good and her last performance was in a English independent movie called The Trunk, but she did it like it was the most important part of her career, that’s what I admire her, and even though she wasn’t perfect, she had alcohol problems, you also had to think that in the 1930’s she adopted 4 children and raised em alone, think about that but almost 100 years ago

The 1960's happened. Joan was losing her shit the entire time about hippies and the death of class and glamour during that decade. Watching period dramas like Mad Men you can literally watch it go a bit with every season.

people since the 1980s are horrible now especially the ones under 40 who dont care about what was or should be only whats happening now its wrong in every way and just awful.!!!

Amazing. Five classic films and nowadays rarely is any film something you'd want to watch twice, much less once. Too bad Jack Warner got an Oscar. His brothers were decent, but he was a real piece of work.

I think she looked best with blonde hair after she turned 50 or so. If only she had lightened those brows! I miss the days when movie stars weren't smug and rather vulgar lecturers. For all her glamour and nervous poise, Joan has some semblence of humility here. I remember seeing a dress she wore in Mildred Pierce at Warner Brothers museum section (on the studio tour) and she was shockingly tiny. I would say that her dress size could not have been larger than an American Size 4. She was a petite woman with broad shoulders and a huge presence.

Yes those eyebrows were so big and dark and harsh. Unfortunately I found it was all I could look at when I saw her in her later years. Her earlier years her brows were much lighter and not filled in so big. It would have made her look younger to keep them light. But she was a fabulous actress!

I would love to go back in time to this wonderful place when people were proper nicer and showed respect in public at such an important event when motion pictures were really terrific people got dressed up and showed that things meant something. What a shame this isnt happening like this anymore !!!!

''My Fair Lady'' is a great movie! Intelligent, funny and the songs all very good. I love Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle! Only saw 3 of the movies nominated that year: ''Mary Poppins'', ''My Fair Lady'' and ''Zorba the Greek''. The '60s was the best decade for Hollywood musicals! ''West Side Story'', ''The Sound of Music'', ''Mary Poppins'', ''My Fair Lady'', ''Oliver!'', ''Funny Girl'' and ''Hello Dolly!'' all released in the '60s.

many actors who didn't sing in film were nominated for the Oscar- Jessica Lange, Rosalind Russell, Deborah Kerr- the knives were just out for Audrey....they offered the film to Cary Grant and he famously said- 'I won't do it- and I won't even see it if Rex isn't in it' Many expected Audrey to do the same thing- but she knew Jack Warner wouldn't have cast Julie- she saw the list and Julie wasn't in the top 5 and Audrey knew the #2 or 3 person after her would take it- so she did it...

Audrey DEFINITELY should have been nominated, regardless of not doing her own singing. Like you said, MANY actors didn't do their own singing in various movies and were nominated, and this particular occasion shouldn't have been an exception. Audrey turned in superb work (as usual) in that film.

Jack Warner when the Moguls moguled. It was only in 1927 that sound came to the movies with the Jazz Singer--also a Warner production.

I know "Dr. Strangelove..." should've won and could've won, but then could AMPAS really resist "My Fair Lady"? Not really; besides, the main competition was between "MFL" and "Mary Poppins" anyway. Harrison winning over Sellers for Best Actor, though, kinda hurts more than Picture and Director.

Love the 'elbow' Gladys Cooper gives to Jack Warner as George rises to the aisle. Hey, is that Ethel Waters on the bottom left of the screen just before George reaches the stage? As Warner rises there's Barrie Chase & further up Ginger Rogers. Across it's Laurence Harvey, Margaret Leighton (?), Charlton Heston, Debbie Reynolds, Anne Bancroft, Agnes Moorhead, Lee Tracy, Robert Stack, Ethel Waters (?). A stellar group!

Fantastic clip. Loved joans reaction to bob and her enunciation of the nominees. Patricia neal suffered a stroke thus she couldnt give out best actor to rex harrison and reason for telegram. She was absent when she won best actress year before since she was about to give birth.

Yes. Joans last time as presenter. She presented 3 times in 1960s. Academy asked her present best actor in 1947 the year after she won year before but declined due to stage fright. She sure didnt have a problem with it this decade.

These mid 60's hairdos were pretty impressive. Most of that was what they call a cascade and then they mix your own hair into it. I remember they used to make the waitresses at Bob's Big Boy wear those it was a way to keep hair out of the food. Joan's hair probably used half a can of Aqua Net. She actually looks good here. These days all women her age are botoxed and lifted so much they look like a science project.

Sometimes, the personal life of the nominees affect the results of the winners. It used to be a time full of prejudice when George Cukor won Best Director. Every single member of the academy knew George Cukor was gay. Still, George’s talent was stronger than his personal life and I couldn’t be happier for it.
