The EXPED is a billion times better than the LOUD, UNCOMFORTABLE Sea to Summit Ether Light Insulated. Cofort rules over a couple ounces of loud and uncomfortable. I live in Alaska and camp with no heat source other than my body in clothing down to -30 F actual. Lowest-78F WCF - I wore an expedition suit in my sleeping bag.

There are a few out there that are way too loud for me. Man, that is a seriously low low!

Yep. Like mine too when tenting in cold weather. A heavier option, but I'll take the ounces to stay comfortable when needed. It will also work for the Amok..lol.

But when you either don't sleep or carry something like this, it makes the decision pretty easy!

I have the even warmer (and heavier) Downmat XP 9 LW. I’m well pleased with it and didn’t know they had a lighter (and less insulated but just as thick) mat. So thank you, it’s an idea but I’ll probably go for a summer mat next.
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 3 года назад
Man, where do you use that pad? That's a killer warm pad. Do you find them as comfortable as I do?
@anhatur
@anhatur 3 года назад
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Yeah. I first of all needed a thick mat as I guess I have rather curved back and get back problems if I can’t stick my butt far down into the mattress. And thought “why not go the length while I’m at it”. It’s the shell that makes these mats heavy, not really the insulation. It’s useful as even with that, I can get a cold butt if I can’t find (or make) a depression in the terrain there in the middle. So I’m looking at an even thicker mattress for summer. Warm mattresses are also really good for quilts, as it’s insulation that’s not pressed together.

I just pulled the trigger on one of these. Im a side sleeper and Ive gotton sore hips and legs from my previous pad and got cold sleeping on top of snow. I hope this pad is everything I HOPE it will be. Super excited to get this pad as a replacement for my hunting trips mid to late season in the Mtns between Sept and Nov.

Looks like a pad that’s right up my alley. I’m always on the search for more comfort :-) I could probably squeeze that into my double layer ridge runner. I need that level of warmth in that Puppy

I currently use the XTherm on winter trips. The wife is kind enough to let me borrow it. But this does seem like a great pad option if I purchased one just for me.

This is a good pad, but I'd suggest looking into the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated Wide version. It is amazing, you basically get all the comfort of the Exped but for ~11 oz. less. I use that for everything but sub-zero temps then I'll shift to the Thermarest Xtherm MAX wide version.

Aren’t those roughly half the R value?

I know you prefer the Exped, and I agree it’s a great pad, just heavy. I prefer my hammock like you, however for the same reasons bought the XTherm long/wide pad. The newer ones which I have, I feel they have minimized the crunching sound. And like you I’m a side sleeper and I toss and turn. It took me several times to get used to the pad and find the sweet spot. I can honestly say that I sleep very well on it now. I haven’t found my feet falling off the end either. At 20oz and a 6.9 R-value I’m very impressed with this pad. We all know there is a specific pad out there for everyone. Just wanted to leave a comment as well. Great video. Keep em coming..

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 truthfully I was worried about the sound. I have camped in shelters with other people inside, and none of them mentioned the sound at all. So I figure it must be quieter. Borrow mine and see what you think. I promise mine isn’t funktified yet lol

Great review, watched both of yours! Moosejaw has it at 8 R-Value, maybe a newer version? Could you tell me the dimensions of the LW version you have when it's in the stuff sack? Thanks!
@SpiguyverBackpacking1
@SpiguyverBackpacking1 2 года назад
I don't usually keep it in the stuff sack, I actually roll it and put it in the inflation bag, that way I'm not carrying an extra piece of gear. It's about 14-15 inches wide and about 6 inches in diameter, but I'm not trying to compress it to the max I can.
