Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I’m jealous. My favorite hunting rifle is a pristine 1953 Model 70 Sporter in .270 Winchester. Just had her out to the range yesterday in early preparation for deer season. That rifle is factory, other than a lightened trigger spring, but will consistently print 4 round groups under 1 1/2” at 100 yards with Federal 130 gr soft points. It shoots even better with my handloads.

Ron thank you for amplifying the skills of the hunter...we should not be long range snipers or expect a life and death scenario to be clean every time. Stillhunting, reading sign, stalking, are every bit as important as pulling the trigger. ANYONE can pull a trigger- only a hunter knows how turn that simple action into meat.

I read an article today about a group of wild crossbred hogs there calling "Super pigs " starting to move south out of Canada into the states . They were saying these pigs are capable of taking down mature whitetail deer and that you can tell they are hunting and depleting all kind of wildlife. Sounds like a good thing for that razor back to handle! Good day sir .
@trentbryan7374
@trentbryan7374 Год назад
The "super pigs" label is pretty exaggerated. They're barely larger on average than regular pigs and any fully grown pig can take down a mature deer if only it would actively hunt it and be able to catch it. Either way the less pigs the better

Was born and raised in Alaska, and spent a great deal of time on the southeast coast with plenty of rain and humidity ( 16 ft. of precip per annum--yes "ft.")... Was taught the same process as Allen, with one small mod. We mixed about 10% Ballistol w/the hot H2O. The hot water was primarily to remove corrosive salts, and general fouling, from the ammunition we often used (old 7x57). The Ballistol would turn the water into a milky mixture and left a fine oil coating after the hot water evaporated... and I suppose the Ballistol may have helped with general cleaning as well. I can say the bores were bright and rust free... not a small accomplishment in our wet environment.

Ron, thanks for more great nuggets of hunting wisdom. At about 5:55 you mention two holes are superior to one for better blood trails. I stopped a buck at a range of about 150 yards, just at a fence that bordered thick pines. I took a standing shot and aimed to hit the shoulder and drop him. His haunches dropped momentarily as though he had been hit; and he quickly cleared the fence and was gone. We were only about ten minutes into legal hunting time; so I waited for the sun to light up the field before I looked for blood. I found one drop on a blade of grass; and there I crawled under the fence. There was a continually improving blood trail; and it was quite erratic. It seemed the buck was stumbling into trees and then veering off until he plowed into another tree. The whole time he was heading toward another open field; and beyond that was a creek with thick cover. The pines were so thick that I was on my hands and knees; and using a flashlight because the sunlight just wasn’t penetrating to the forest floor. It took a while through those thick trees to find that he had run only about seventy yards. I had missed the shoulder and made a classic double-lung shot. The bullet was a .358 Barnes 180 grain TTSX; and the exit hole was spilling pink foam. Every deer that I’ve harvested with a Barnes bullet has had a complete pass through. It’s nice to know you’ll have a blood trail and a clean harvest.

I have similar experience to you as to favorite classic arms. The model 70 Winchester is my favorite, I also believe it has very beautiful lines. My first new big game rifle I bought for myself was a new Winchester XTR featherweight in 7x57. I thought I had the perfect deer rifle , but unfortunately I could never get that particular rifle to group very well so it didn't last very long. I do have a new south Carolina model 70 featherweight in 257 Roberts that does group very well with it's prefered ammo. I also have a NULA 24B in 270 that is the most consistent shooting rifle I have ever owned. I had a 760 Remington 30-06 that I really liked but I cut back some and I don't have it anymore. I don't have a Park West rifle, but I do have a pre64 model 70 in 300 H&H magnum, and I like a good classic single shot rifle too. I don't have a Dakota but I do have a special limited edition B78 Browning built on the newer 1885 action, in 30-06 with a beautiful feathercrotch walnut stock on it. I have greatly enjoyed hunting with it.

@@Snailz5 As a newer reloaded and paying more attention to what I was shooting, I started out enamored with Hornady bullets, afterall they had produced some of my best groups to that point. So, believing their hype, I started shooting SSTs, until I shot a deer with one, and wasn't able to recover it... it just bounded away without much sign of slowing down. Fast forward a couple years, and I've learned that Hornady likes to encourage long shots with subpar bullets and their brass isn't very consistent either. So, now I have blocked their long-winded, self-satisfying podcasts, so I can hopefully get their self inflated propaganda out of my head. TTSXs for me now.
@jaydunbar7538
@jaydunbar7538 Год назад
@@cobjread hornady offers a monolithic as well, the CX. I’ve never tried it but with it being a monolithic I’d expect good penetration. I’ve always had great accuracy out of hornady loads, never had a issue with performance on game either. To be fair I hunt the north woods of MN so most shots are sub 50 yards, which may be part of the effective performance I’ve had. My old Winchester 1894 in 30wcf filled my buck tag last season with Hornady leverevolution, didn’t make it 10 yards before it dropped from the single shot.

But he's wrong the 338 razerback/spectre has a .308 bolt face the mini Mauser doesn't come with.308 bolt face and the 338 razorback/spectre has a 308 length OAL case again the mini Mauser is to short of a action! And the 338 razorback shoots 285 grn , 300 grn and 325 grn very long bullets that need a 2.885- 2.90 308length action!

Question: What are the best do-it-all cartridges for hunting most game?
@RonSpomerOutdoors
@RonSpomerOutdoors Год назад
Many, but consider 7mm-08 Rem., 7x57 Mauser, 284 Win, 280 Rem., 7mm Rem Mag, 308 Win, 30-06, any 300 magnum, any 338, 375 H&H and Ruger. Could go with 270 Win. and friends at the low end or even many 6.5s. Bell used 6.5 Mannlicher to shoot a hundred or so elephants, many head of plains game. It's more about the bullet and where you park it.

@chrismaclean5434
@chrismaclean5434 Год назад
@@charlieboi6370Do consider where you're hunting and what you're hunting. This will help dictate your choices. For North America, 35 Whelen will take down everything up to Grizzly and will not punish you like a large magnum. 7mm Rem Mag for long-range mountain hunting is highly recommended by many. 7mm08, 270, and the 280 are good all-around cartridges and I would argue better than 30'06 due to their reduced recoil and accuracy over the ol Springfield. If you are determined to have a 30 cal., 30-30 for deep woods or 308 for everything else. Best of luck!

Ron As Far as the AR platform for hunting. I have a couple of hunting partners that build 6.5 Grendel rifle this winter as did I . Our plans are to hunt with them West River Deer in South Dakota in November of 23 .rest asure that we will take out traditional rifles with us .We thought it might be a fun experience to use the AR platform Deer Hunting. What's your thoughts?
@ronspomer4366
@ronspomer4366 Год назад
Clinton, I think you are more than welcome to handicap yourselves with a low velocity round like the 6.5 Grendel. It's always fun stalking closer. Of course, you may also play around with scope dialing and trajectory charts to compensate for drops at longer ranges. Hunters have been doing that since flintlock days. Many still like to hunt with 30-30s and flat nose bullets. Heck, I took my first two deer and pronghorn with an M94 30-30 in SD. Just be prepared to be frustrated should a big buck give yo a fleeting opportunity at 300 to 400 yards when you don't have time to laser distance and set up. That's what I've long enjoyed about the 270/7mm RM class of cartridges -- good maximum point blank range. That allows me to make an educated guess of max distance (inside of 350 yard, say) and take a quick shot. But if you have the time to range and dial, a good 6.5 G. can work. As for the AR platform, if you like the way it carries and handles, nothing wrong with using one. My tastes run toward sleek single shots like the Dakota (now Parkwest Arms) Model 10 falling block, any trim bolt-action, and then lever-actions for close-range work. So many choices, so little time! Have fun. And good luck! I put a lot of boot prints across the prairies of SD.

@@ronspomer4366 The marvelous thing about this country, and hunting in general, is YOU don't have to like AR platforms, while at the same time not denigrating those that do. You have always been clear about that. Many like the modularity of ARs, while many like simpler things. Maximum point blank range is a great concept for hunting. The military calls it battle sight, which has a different spectrum and purpose than harvesting game. Most animals are generally on the move, only briefly pausing to eat or scan their surroundings. By the time one looks to dial in, the quarry could have moved closer or farther away. MPBR has everything "predialed" to a certain distance. Ballistic drop compensating reticles can also be a boon to hunters as well if they know their subtensions. Great content, as always.

@ronspomer4366
@ronspomer4366 Год назад
Depends on how you define "regular bullets," Mike. If you mean cup/core like Federal Soft Point, Winchester PowerPoint, Rem. Core-Lokt, etc., they tend to over expand, shed jackets in game, break apart in game, and fail to penetrate adequately, which is why "improved" bullets were invented. Some are: Nosler Partition, all bonded core bullets, Federal Terminal Ascent, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Swift A-Frame, Winchester XP3, Speer Grand Slam, all the copper bullets.

There are so many better cartridges for the job and action he wants to do/use. This is a like a decafe, artificial sweetener, non-dairy creamer coffee at Starbucks they appropriately call that order a "Why Bother". Since I am not politically correct and am rather frank this sounds like a why bother cartridge and action combo. If you want to do it no matter what people think about your plan than why bother asking publicly join a 13 step group that will give you groop hugs and valadation on command some place other than the gun shooting world please! When you use an action that is massively longer than what the cartridge needs you end up with feeding issues. The Howa Mini action would be a better action to start with but it would still need to be modified a lot.
