My Favorite Saltwater Loop Knot // Homer Rhode Figure 8 Loop

I use a knot that essentially hybridizes a traditional Homer Rhodes loop knot but starts with a "Figure 8" in the main tippet line. It finishes with a half hitch as a jamb knot to finish things off. I've found this knot to be easy to tie, efficient, and provide small and well centered loops.
It's nearly identical to the Steve Huff Double Figure 8 except the jamb knot is a single half hitch. Both are great options, this is my personal favorite.

Great Job! I am teaching this knot to some offshore fishing buddies who don't fly fish. Your video is really, really good. Concise and clear. I've used this knot for 40 years saltwater flyfishing and it has yet to fail and is easy to tie in a rocking boat or on a flat. In our offshore fishing this is a great knot for tuna fishing where we need minimal visual impact with flurocarbon leaders to lures or live bait hooks and we need no influence from the knot on the movement of the bait or lure. Because it will tie true and correct in large tippets, up to 130 lbs, it is a super useful offshore knot. And I can tie it fast and I trust it more than a crimp on a rocking boat. Also...I love your shop....I buy gear from you guys because you do videos like this!

Yeah the Homer Rhodes Loop knot is absolutely the go to knot for tying a large fly onto heavy shock tippet. It's not that strong of a knot, but it doesn't need to be. The heaviest class tippet you're going to be using will be 20-lb. test and if you tie that knot in 60, 80, or 100-lb test shock tippet, you will always break your class tippet long before you break that Homer Rhodes Loop knot. The homer Rhodes Loop knot typically tests out at 50 to 70% of the breaking strength of the shock tippet, but again with class tippets maxing out at 20-lb test, even if you're using a 60-lb shock tippet that still leaves you at least 10-lbs higher breaking strength than the class tippet. I tie it a little differently than you do. Basically I learned that knot from Lefty Kreh's old book Practical Fishing Knots (published first in 1972) when I went to work for the Orvis San Francisco store as fishing mgr. and Schools coordinator. Still, the result looks just the same. Once you get used to tying that know, it's really a quick knot to tie. But I wouldn't tie it in 6x tippet ;)

Seems like a good idea for jerkbaits on traditional gear too

Can this be used on streamers, small fresh water flies? I like the balance idea.

It doesn't tie well on light line because the jamb knot doesn't catch very well. For that I use a Non Slip Mono Loop. Under 20# test this knot would require a larger jamb knot (the 2nd step).

I actually invented my own loop knot that can be tied down to two pound test without weakening the line, if or when I get around to making a video on it I’ll share it with reds and maybe they can spread the word. It is killer for using on balanced flies and tiny hair jigs for panfish and trout!

That’s not a double figure 8. A double figure 8 has a double overhand as the second knot as well.

Yep you're right, I short it with a single o.h. most of the time depending on how the shock tippet is acting that day. Sometimes it seats best with a single so I'm used to that and forgot to finish with the double o.h. It seems like some heavy shock likes a single, some likes a double. I should do this over and explain that. I'll change the title now until I can add that. Thank you.

You don't know what a 1/2 hitch is. You're tying a square knot at the end

No, that´s a half hitch.
