mk floyd this movie was very emotional and.. was a fun time in general. critics do not under stand the term fun. they would look at mortal kombat the movie and will try to critisize the movie as a film. lol
It's a brilliant film. For all its length, there is not a single wasted moment that doesn't contribute to the conclusion. It's beautifully filmed and edited.
ihateu890 it's rates fresh but just barely. It really divided critics upon its initial release in 2012 but since then, a lot more critics have been reviewing it positively. I believe it'll be looked back upon as one of the great films of this time similar to Strange Days and Logan's Run
kind of like shawshank redemption. flopped in theaters but a masterpiece. This movie is favorite movie of all time. Its so freaking beautiful. So emotional. Thought provoking. It has everything.
Gosh I loved the door metaphor. "If I care to imagine heaven, I would imagine a door opened...and behind it, I will find him there, waiting for me", it gives me the chills, how they see each other and the emotions they project. Powerful scene
"Do you mean you are still in love with him?" "I mean that I will always be..." "and what if no one believes this truth?" "Someone already does..." my god what a masterpiece
@@billdavis7577 I am with Bill the novel is wonderful. A team of narrators does the audio book, different voices for each of the main characters. But the film is genius of its own kind. In fact Somni's beautifully profound line quoted here by pMizzle is not even in the book. And the film changes the presentation of the timeline, which much improves the movie experience IMHO. Many thanks to the filmmakers who made a cinema masterpiece from a work that many would consider un-filmable.
1:40 I love the way the archivist reacts, the way he sits straighter, the slight movements of his expression... He has lived his whole life in a society which acts disposably, in the here and now, not thinking of anything much outside of the bubble of the self. And now, for a fabricant, something not even truly human, to show him the idea that love can outlast death... I think that was the moment he started to believe her truth.
+Andreas Ährlund-Richter You later (time-wise) see the archivists name for a brief moment...as the author of the "bible" of Somni in the post-apocalyptic segment. It's printed, or rather stitched, into the cover. Apparently, they put a lot of thought into the prop, which you only see on-screen for a moment. The metal banding is made up of Fabricant neck bands and the cloth pages are from their clothes. The words are from their colored hair which they cut off in solidarity with Somni-451. Her designation number, btw, is the same as from the Ray Bradbury's book "Fahrenheit 451" which is a story that takes place in a dystopian future; "451" being the temperature that paper (like that in books) burns. I'm not sure if it's coincidence or not since I haven't heard anyone mentioning this fact. The movie "Cloud Atlas" is full of symbolism and easter eggs. It's definitely a movie worth owning and the book is even better. Or so I've heard.
''If I had remained invisible the truth would stay hidden. I couldn' t allow that.'' That is my favourite phrase from the film. To always have the courage to stand in light, to fight for truth.
This movie is a beautiful mess! And in a weird way it makes me appreciate it even more. Through its flaws it’s ideas shine through and still provoke my thoughts on a daily basis. That is the best art that is what matters.
While I actually agree with you, the problem unfolds, when people are so dedicated to their own individual truths yet that truth is based on lies, hoaxes, misinformation, and conspiracy theories. To give a well-known recent example in history, tens of millions of Americans thought, Donald Trump actually won the election and the free and fair election was stolen from him even though there was no evidence to back up that claim. Donald Trump even thought the election had been stolen from him and committed sedition when asking his supporters to commit insurrection with a failed attempted coup d’état on January 6. My point is that these people thought they were fighting for truth and justice, even though there was no evidence to back up this truth. When people who fight for their own individual truth, and try to push it onto others and the world, even though there’s no evidence to back up their assertions, then the world can become a very dangerous and scary place. this is why fighting fascism, theocracy, and authoritarianism that seems to permeate the modern conservative party not only in America, but in multiple democracies around the world is so important. We can never allow the least educated, and most religiously fanatic people in the world to destroy modern, secular democracies.
For some reason this speech touches me on a spiritual level. I have watched this movie only once and i personally believe it to be a cinematic masterpiece. The message this movie conveys goes far beyond whatever flaws you want to find it it. This is truly a transcending film in my opinion.
*_“Our lives are not our own. We are bound to others, past and present, and by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.”_* ― David Mitchell Cloud Atlas
@@monjiaitaly As in any time in history ... it was -- it is the efforts of the level headed ones in government that will becalm the confused seas of ignorance and hate. Take it slow. There has yet to be that all dark night. D.A.
YaboiDrizzyDrew it is about different stories whose actions affect the future of the other characters...mmm you shouldnt be watching this spoiler videos...
I'm usually really harsh when it comes to films. But this film really had a massive impact on me, and it really changed how I view the external concept of death. Also read the book, and, the film is better than the book (how often can you say that?). To me, the film is an absolute and underrated masterpiece.
Im reading the book atm but the first part (the journals) is so slow to read :( reddit says it gets better later on but yeah, the movie was definitely better!
Jun Okubo I skipped to the stories I cared more about! hehehe the story about sixsmith and frobisher tho, it turns out differently at the end. In the movie the reason for frobisher to committ suicide is stronger
I read about half of the book and I couldn't continue. It's just boring and it felt like a chore to read it. It's a shame because the movie kept me engaged in every moment, and it's what inspired me to read the book.
Jerome Moody this is surely about love. you got it correct. i see every people in this world trying to describe the film but your short little reply was the answer i was looking for. love that cannot be defined by race, sex, even time. the basic human function that everybody compells but yet embraces,.. there might be flaws in this movie aswell with any movies. but i say this is a unique experience for a film lover that i will remember. not the best, but still the great.
I think in one scene Rupert Sixsmith's niece tells Luisa Rey that her uncle was a romantic, someone who believed in eternal love ... and this is shortly or immediately followed by this interview scene. When Sonmi tells the archivist (Sixsmith in a future life) that she will always love Haejoo, the look on his face ... it's like he hears his own past voice speaking to him. So powerful...
tweepy123 favourite line throughout the film. second one was "what is any ocean but a multitude of drops"... also when she said that its kinda liberating.
crimson177 Technically it's up to interpretation. But you did observe his facial reaction XD Also, once an idea is planted inside the mind...well, you know.
I loved that "someone already does" part. :) But I really like the truth behind the whole, "our lives are not our own thing". I mean from the moment we are born to the moment we die, we are constantly interacting with others: either through speech or deed and these actions can - and do - affect every person we interact with. And this process applies to every person: past, present and in the future. Our actions can have a profound impact on the lives of others around us today and can extend to those way in the future. And the sad truth is, almost everyone believes their lives to be separate from those of others, which is not the case at all.
I love this part @1:14 where the two men are filmed from above and they look like two pieces of a same piece, like Yin and Yang. It's so sad and beautiful at the same time and speaks heaps about their love.
Just had my second watch, I didn't cry the first time, I was literally sputtering the second time, not a beautiful cry, like a real guttural cry. In actually crying right now. I don't cry when i watch movies. Until now. The first time I was just trying to take it all in. The second time I got to relax, I could let the pidgin dialect in the 6th story just be instead of trying to decipher it. I could focus on what was being said more specifically since I didn't have to catch the plot.
I agree I have watched this movie probably 10 or more times and every time I watched it I noticed something new. I'm 2012 when this came out I was 12 and was confused and still liked it and from then on I noticed more stuff, but now I am 18 and I watched it again today and I understand it so much I love this movie it's so underrated it's a masterpiece.
Something changed inside of me after I saw this movie for the 1st time, the best thing ever, coudn't imagine this would be possible. Awesome masterpiece, everyone should watch it!
“Oh god, i missed you so much” makes me cry so hard every time i hear him saying that. I understand that Adam and Hae Joo lived in different centuries and when Adam said that he missed Tilda, Hae Joo and Sonmi-451 weren’t even born, but in the last scene i see Sonmi running to Hae Joo and cuddling him and he says that he missed her like if they haven’t seen each other for centuries. Thinking more about this movie hurts me more every time💔
That reminds me of 47 Ronin. Where he says I will search for you a thousand lifetimes.. And she says I will wait for you for a thousand lifetimes.. Something like that I can't recall but the message is that love is timeless.
This has to be one of the most beautiful movies made. Such a deep (yet wonderfully simple) message, raw emotions, and a beautiful soundtrack to accompany it. I never get tired of watching Cloud Atlas!
I love this scene, but my favorite scene out of the whole movie is when Sixsmith dreams of going into a room full of glass figurines where he finds Frobisher, and together they tear the room apart while the "The Atlas March" swells in the background.
Okay, I'm back with another comment because this scene and this movie draw me back every so often. Doona Bae's delivery of "someone already does" is so masterful and so poignant-you can hear her words turn into a gentle whisper by the end of the phrase. And James D'Arcy's ability to act and emote entirely in his face for the Archivist's reaction to the line...superb. This scene sends chills down my spine every single time I watch it!
I watched this movie with someone I love with pure love, someone I met in a previous incarnation, but the war took each other away from us. We hugged and cried together, even though it's a difficult love, I know that we will always be together, if not in this life, then in the next life. I know this and it gives me peace.
thank you anh tu 'and what if no-one believes this truth' 'someone already does' that line right there binds the film and breaks me at the same time,10,20 years from now this will be hailed a classic
The door which somni talks about is the rebirth in another life, another epoch. And once the door closes, the moment takes place which Adam and Tilda meet again. Adam and Tilda are the same souls as Hae-Joo Chang and Somni, only reincarnated in different times. So the lovers meet again after death. This blew my fucking mind when I realised it. Epic.
I saw it more as Sonmi recalling their past lives with the knowledge they'd meet again in the next. And if you subscribe to the idea that the comet birthmark = the same soul, then indeed they did, as Zachry and Meronym. Yeah, I'm aware that Cavendish and Luisa lived simultaneously, but I'll forgive that as a deliberate error the screenwriter hoped wouldn't be noticed. *shrugs*
I watched this movie then the next day watched it again as there was so much in it that I thought I understood but did not understand - to this day I still learn something new each time I see part of the movie.
The Wachowskis have brilliantly linked together 3 films dealing with aspects of connectivity: V For Vendetta shows connectivity between things in this world The Matrix shows connectivity through the physical and spiritual worlds Cloud Atlas shows connectivity through time
Oh my God I never realized it before, you can hear Chang's heart, which Sonmi always found peace listening to, slowly stop beating as she watches with tears! Oh that makes the scene even more heartbreaking, didn't think that was possible!
This is the most satisfying and beautiful conclusions of any movie I've seen. It's absolutely masterful how Sonmi-451 describes heaven as a door opening and behind it I will find you there waiting as Adam comes through the door and his wife runs to him. The timing and juxtaposition couldn't have been more perfect.
Watched this movie during a breakup that destroyed me... this movie will always be my favorite; the soundtrack is beautiful and it makes me cry every time. And I believe that maybe it changed the way I think now.
"I believe death is only a door. One closes, and another opens. If I were to imagine heaven, I would imagine a door opening..... and he would be waiting for me there." my heart 💘😧😧😧😭💘💘💦💦💦
-Our lives are not our own, from womb to tomb, we're bound to others. Past and present... and by each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future. Sonmi-451.
I'm so happy to see so many people also loved this movie. After I originally saw it in theaters, I saw some bad reviews, and I was very surprised it wasn't nominated for many Oscars. So much of the movie was so well done. I'm glad to see others liked this movie as much as I did and that it also had a great impact on others.
One of my all time favourite movies. The instant the credits started to roll, after it's perfect ending, I couldn't help thinking of all the movies I have seen in my lifetime, and it was the only one where the word 'Masterpiece' came instinctively to my mind.
I've been watching this over and over for the past half hour and each time I watch it I get more and more emotional. The emotion on her face, the music, the message. Its all so beautiful, that I actually feel like crying out of joy and relief that this exists.
Something changed inside me after I saw this movie for the 1st time, the best thing ever, coudn't imagine this would be possible. Aswesome masterpiece, everyone should watch it!
No words are enough to explain the beauty of this movie. Brilliant. Genius. I don't even know what to say. Just finished watching and I have to say that this movie TRULY transcends. It touches that deepest soul within all of us.
I feel like this is such an underrated movie. It was before it’s time. It has so much depth. I cannot believe one of the biggest reasons people didn’t like this movie was because it made you think... and some people got confused the flock? 🤬🤬😒🙄
Oh goodness the tears. I'm crying like a little baby. This scene is so beautiful. It felt like it was talking to me. My significant other passed away a little over a year ago. I was holding him as he left us. "I believe death is only a door. When it closes, another opens. If I care to imagine a heaven, I'd imagine a door opens, and behind it he's waiting for me." Yeah, Archivist, he's waiting for me. Don't you worry.
The first time i saw this scene in the cinema i cried for half an hour i felt it so close, the story blending, the actions and consequences and the impact of how love transcend our spirits
Although the archivist is a relatively unimportant/side character (especially in the book), I always liked him a lot. He was born into this society and knows nothing else (in the book, it's painfully obvious that he can't imagine a life without all the technology). But unlike the more traditional politic men of the older generation (Hugo Weaving's character), he is young and ready to listen, even to a mere fabricant. You can see how he actually considered everything Sonmi said and didn't just write it off as a fabricant's unimportant babbling. That's why I love him so much. Especially since archivist is played by James D'Arcy who also played Sixmith, this gives the archivist character even more depth, because just like Sonmi, he also lost someone in a previous life. It's almost as if he can vaguely remember it. Seriously, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw and James D'Arcy made this film so epic and beautiful.
Apparently from other comments above, it seems the Archivist chronicled this interview with Somni, that's how she became a "goddess" in the future. There's supposedly a quick scene of the Bible being shown written by the Archivist in the spaceship with Meromyn and Zachary.
It's funny I can now use this film to identify idiocy, if people report back to me and say it was shit or they don't understand it. this indicates to me that we still have a long way to go until people are ready for the true-true XD
I can't believe the only reason why I knew this film is because Tom Hanks was in it. This movie deserves more recognition. It's fantastic and truly one of a kind. I'm glad it didn't ruin the book much like books that were turned into movies were ruined.
Stunning film that is tragically overlooked and underrated. I've read the book many times (like everything else David Mitchell has written!) and love how the film handles the source material.
