I love hearing about your journey with the Wheel of Time. These books have also been massively impactful to me. I'm a university student and I read the series back when I was 13 when I was too young to completely get everything. I decided to pick it back up this year and I felt very similar emotions to you. I love that I've found your channel through this, you seem like an incredibly warm, kind person. This video made me really happy!

Just bought all of the hardcovers brand new from Amazon and waiting for them to arrive. The journey will soon begin. Thanks Kathi! You’ve inspired me to start this series. I was tempted many times since the 90s but now the time is right. Can’t wait!

The Wheel of Time saved my life. I came very close to ending my life. Instead I decided to reread the series (a loved one had bought me a brand new set of the series for Christmas, since my copies were worn out to pieces). I found out just days later I was pregnant. If I had not chose WoT/life, I would have never had my beautiful daughter. I named her Moiraine, because she saved me 💙

So thankful to have found your channel. I've been a fantasy lover my whole life and have always been intimidated by the large tomes that are the norm in the genre. The first book in this series made its debut the same year I was born and you've given me the courage to finally dive into this series. Cant wait to let you know how the first book takes me! :)

Hey Kathi! I am so happy I found your channel. I just finished the series and I feel it as a great loss that I will never be able to experience the series for the first time again. One topic I want to reflect upon is the fact that I did not read the series, at least not in the traditional way; I listened to it on audible. Usually I like to read a book before I listen to it. But when I realised the amount of books I would have to get through, I came to the conclusion that it would take me several years to get through if I were to read them. I am currently studying law, so I don't have as much time as before to read for fun. This way I got through the series in a little less than 18 months. I am actually happy that I decided to do it this way, because it never felt like a drag to get through any of the books. I think that had a lot to do with me be able to do other stuff while I was experiencing the magical tale. When it comes to fantasy books and series I almost prefer to listen to them since it brings the tale to life, but then again, nothing beats the feeling of reading a book by the fireplace! Anyway, have you ever listened to audiobooks? If not, I would recommend it for the simple reason that it lets you enjoy a lot more books than if you had to read them all yourself. Best regards from Norway 🇳🇴

Thank you so much for the kind words. I understand what you mean about feeling sad that you won't be able to experience the series for the first time again. However, there is another kind of joy to be had in re-reading a beloved series with beloved characters. I have tried audio books but find I get distracted and don't take it all in. I intend to try them again but they may not be for me.

Kathi I reallly enjoyed this video, so many of your sentiments echo my own. Instead of repeating what you've already said I will mention one thing that surprised me on rereading the series. When I started the series as a teenager in the 90s I found Nynaeve so annoying. I feel that I was siding with the Emond's Field boys in disliking her pushy ways. But on rereading the series as a 30 year old man with kids, I found myself thinking, 'Listen to Nynaeve, she cares about you and has your best interests at heart you wool brained fools!' That I could feel so differently about a character at different points in my life shows Robert Jordan's skill as an author. I would love to see more Wheel of Time content from you.

Thank you JD. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Even for me, on re-reading the books, I found my attitude towards some characters or storylines had changed. And Nynaeve was always my favourite of the female characters, then and now. I do want to talk more about the series, so thank you for the encouragement.

Just found your channel through this video, and enjoyed listening to your journey. Even though I've been reading all kinds of books, including fantasy for many years, I only learned about Wheel of Time around July this year and am currently on Book Nine. I was actually happy to find that there are 14+ books, but don't know if I would feel the same if I were re-reading them. I think there are some parts I would skim through. I'm considering detouring into New Spring after book 9 before coming back to book 10. I also plan to watch the series. Your channel looks interesting, so I subscribed and am looking forward to future videos.

Thank you for this review Kathi. It sealed my decision to order the second half of the series. My son introduced me to this through a request for Book 1 for Christmas last year. As nosey as I am, .... I read a bit of it before wrapping. Then asked him how he came about it. A friend from his work loaned a copy to him, but as he was so busy, he could not read much before he felt he needed to return it. But, he wanted to continue. Well, I have up to Book 6 now....and feel quite invested. I really dislike not having a complete series, unless I hear it truly isn't worth it. I've heard over and over that it is worth it. Yet, I'm picky. Your heartfelt review of the ending being very satisfying led me complete an order for the rest of the series. It took me all year, but I have added The Wheel of Time to my shelves. (Now, on with my reading!)

I have a similar journey with fantasy as yourself, during a lot of downtime in 1999 (mandatory millitary service) I randomly borrowed eye of the world from a guy and was instantly hooked, in the last 25 years I have read the series several times, even finishing one of the books in a single sitting when it released, took me 15 hours hehe, and while I have enjoyed other fantasy and sci-fi series WoT has a special place in my heart.

Loved your review. As I have said, I’m still trying to get through book one….a lot has to do with ex-boyfriend and his feelings about these books (his favorite), I’m still trying. Funny you should mention about the sheer amount of characters. He said the same thing too. Glad you reviewed the whole book series. I still want to give it a try and hearing that you were satisfied with the ending was very positive. Personally for me this book need actual books, digital books doesn’t cut it.

The WoT was my gateway into epic fantasy. I came into it having only read Christopher Paolini's (YA series) the Inheritance cycle as my only other foray into the genre. What I appreciate most about it is the prophecies surrounding the dragon and how their interperatations and misinterpretations coloured peoples expectations of the dragon. I also enjoy the character arcs that the Emond's field 5 go through throughout the series. The concept of a reluctant saviour was really intriguing in particular.

I finished The Wheel of Time series long ago. It remains with you, long after you've read the the final sentence of the final book. There is something about it that just defies explanation. I loved the tale itself, and found Jordan's writing style to be unparalleled. For me, his words just flowed off the page. I feel sorry for those who read it, and remain unmoved. What saddens me is the fact that so many will rely solely on the TV adaptation. That will never do justice to the books. For those of your subscribers who'd like to know...there are 14 main books plus a prequel, 4½ million words, and 2,782 distinctly named characters. You don't need to read the prequel, New Spring, but if you wish to include it, most fans suggest reading it between books five and six.
@NerdyKathi

I agree that it remains with you long after you've read the books. I can understand that Jordan may not appeal to everyone, but that is why we have such variety in the arts. Unfortunately, I agree that some who watch the TV show won't appreciate the books, but there are others will try the books because of it. Thank you very much for sharing your view. 😊

Nice spoiler-free assessment. I have two thoughts to add that I think you didn't bring out strongly. 1) One huge strength of the Wheel of Time is the psychological realism. We feel the characters are, perhaps exceptional and heroic, but real people with doubts, ignorance, prejudices, and sometimes psychological problems. Yes, it is a story about a "chosen one." But at the start the chosen one has no interest in being a savior, and what decent person would, really? This realism allows Jordan to develop a deep, thoughtful meditation on being true to oneself, on accepting duties one can't avoid, on leadership, on the nature of cooperation, etc. It's also realistic about falling into evil. Or how people can be difficult or even enemies without being really evil. 2) it is full of heroism and awesome moments, often written in a beautiful, biting, evocative style. The main characters show great grit and daring. And the realism makes all of this amazingly powerful and compelling.
@NerdyKathi

Thank you for sharing, William. I agree on the points you raised, they are both strengths of the books.

I am a male. There were 12 children in my family. 6 boys and 6 girls. I had read the series 5 times before I heard females had issues with female characters in the book. Because I was younger than all my sisters except a baby sisters. I stopped with these sisters, played games with these sisters, and obeyed these sisters. These sisters also taught me manners from which I never got from uneducated parents. There was a matriarchal attitude that I grew up with with me not resenting that. It shows up when I discovered Hariette McDougle Robert’s wife and of all things Editor of his books. Hariette has made public that Robert told he that each female character had one trait from Hariette personality. It kind of makes sense why I didn’t have issues with female characters or thought they weren’t real or too mean or anything else these women might do or not do. I have felt like others that the story slowed in certain books. But these women never tested my reality of how they acted. These sisters of mine I had issues with but never would I try to change them. When I found Hariette boy was I excited. I had lost Robert and had read every bio and anything I could get my hands on. But Harriette we don’t know if she had problems with these females. As far as I know she is Tor’s best and first editor with Tom Doherty the publisher of tor. They thrived off of Robert. They made Robert better. Hariette brought in other companies of types of story writing and books and comic book styles. Another thing is if there are issues with his female written characters he wrote Conan the barbarian first. I’m taking up for Robert. That somewhere on this earth at this age, era, and time there are women that are comparable to these women Robert created. All the facets. Now, this very age and time women should not complain of what is happening with what is happening with the tv series. Because of money that had to be paid to one main character that they couldn’t pay all 6 character actors $1,000,000 or the Alan character. They had to pay Rosamund pike and “A” list actress a high salary. She will also produce series. Amazon only gave $15,000,000 to the show per episode. No matter how slighted women feel about the book series or what theyre doing on the show, Rosamund will carry the series along that we won’t know what has happened. And because Robert had dominant female characters and Moraine leading the show this will help women in our society like no other thing that has been done for women in our own human history. Things happen but because of money women will carry this show in this time until it right for the males characters to shine. We who have read the books know moraines role has to change.
@NerdyKathi

Thank you for sharing your opinion. I didn't mean to imply that Jordan's female characters aren't realistic, but rather that not all women share this one trait I mentioned. It's always encouraging to see strong female characters portrayed in books and films, and it is certainly something we need more of.
