Heya peeps, I'm back with my first vidya essay of 2024. A while back, I did specifically go in-depth about ULTRAKILL's +chargeback, but today I wanted to talk about the broader mechanic of fps ricochets in general. I hope you enjoyed my ramblings one way or another, but in the mean time... @@dpart3106 exactly!!! there was this one time i threw four coins into the air and i got 4 interruptions, 2 streetcleaners and 2 strays. it was on bridgerunner. i think i absolutely demolished the level after that happened

ULTRAKILL also has that "bouncing off walls" ricochet as a variation of the default pistol. (specifically the red version)

​​@@chrisheartman9263iirc the order of operations was UK Marksman --> Reaver Wallbounce --> UK Sharpshooter. A game came out, another game took a different spin on the first's mechanics, and the first game took notes on what the second brought to the table. Pretty standard fare

​@@no-lifenoah7861 the first version of the marksman was actually really similar to the current sharpshooter, except there's no alt fire and the primary fire is the one ricocheting off of walls. hakita scrapped that and made the coin alt fire, and much later in the game's development he took the og marksman and re-added it with a different spin. so it goes like this uk og marksman --> uk current marksman --> reaver wallbounce --> uk sharpshooter

The edits are so cleeaann. I think what makes ricochet mechanics so cool is that its basically the same concept as a headshot/weak spot on the enemy, the twist is that the "weakspot" is determined by the player's kit instead of the enemy's shape and position.

3:20 i like here how the slab marksman is being used instead, because for some reason the normal marksman doesn't cause a hitstop on core snipes with coins.

I hope that gets fixed for the default Marksman. Currently it can be hard for me to tell if the snipe worked in a chaotic environment. Slightly related: I hope that Chargebacks get a hitstop and parry clang sound added to them. It'd be so much more satisfying and clear when you land the chargeback. As it is, you have to divert your attention toward checking the enemy's status afterward, which isn't always great if you're in the middle of a heavy cybergrind wave.

​@@clockwork_mind hey, instead of making it so that the slab marksman is just the same as default but chunkier and slower, that actually sets a more preferable difference or, like the slab marksman buff mod, it could be very arguably different than default that way.

genuinely can’t get enough of your presenting style. i feel like this is also the best your script writing has been so far, and that’s saying a lot! edit: i'm gonna chip in since i noticed a lot of people commenting about the absence of sharpshooter representation; i think it's a good idea that he left it out of this video, since it'd end up overshadowing/being overshadowed by eren's echo (he specifically responded with this reason to another comment). also, when you're looking at things from the perspective of someone who's never played ultrakill or reaver, it definitely makes sense to leave out the sharpshooter in this video since it'd be mostly redundant (got that from lauracraft180's comment). sure, there's more tech to do with the sharpshooter, but i'm pretty sure NOBODY here has used it in a way that compares to what eren is doing with the echo. and yeah, there's the projectile sniping tech the sharpshooter has too, but that's not relevant to a video talking about "ricochets" lol personally, i actually like how eren's echo works more than the sharpshooter, and i'm glad i got to watch some more absolutely nutty clips of eren using it in this video. p.s have you guys realised that the weapon is NAMED after eren himself, the creator of this video? so, this video isn't just him talking about his favourite mechanic; he's talking about his very own gun, dammit!

And, yeah, I was and still am so honoured to have had the Revolver's Blue Variant named after me; I'm just a guy that happens to go for +ricoheadshots more than most others, so the fact that crunkz the dev straight up went "this gun now belongs to Eren" is amazing to me hahaha

I came back to watch the video again with some of my friends but I'm pretty disappointed with some of the comments. "Bro forgot to talk about the ULTRAKILL Sharpshooter" yeah right, as if the guy hitting a god damn CHRISTBACK doesn't know about an unlockable weapon in the game. Did you guys actually watch the video all the way through while witnessing cracked trickshots like 6:28 and somehow NOT come to the conclusion that Eren's Echo in REAVER is what he wanted to specifically talk about regarding wall-based ricochets? I'm not even going to sugarcoat it: I personally think the Echo's ricochets work in a way that is cooler than the Sharpshooter's. It only makes sense not to talk about the Sharpshooter in this video since it'd be redundant.

I initially responded to another comment stating that I decided to leave out the Sharpshooter as I didn't want the surface-based ricochets of one revolver to end up overshadowing the other. But, yeah, I'll fully admit that the Echo's ricochet is my favourite mechanic out of all the ones I mention today (with chargebacks coming in a close second, of course hahaha). You're not wrong when saying that I wanted to gush over the Echo's ricoheadshots more so than the Sharpshooter's ricochets! It *is* a bit disheartening to see the lack of Eren's Echo enjoyers at the moment, but I'm already happy that a couple peeps such as yourself have realised the art-form that is the ricoheadshot!

in Deep Rock Galactic, there's an overclock for the Gunner's minigun called Bullet Hell. It reduces the damage and accuracy of the bullets, but causes them to ricochet off the terrain and directly into the weak points of the enemies. I find it very effective for dealing with large groups of small enemies.

Quake also has a ricochet mechanic. Projectiles from the grenade launcher can bounce off a wall and then hit an enemy. But it's not as cool or commonly used.

On god I feel like 50% of the reason you make these essays is to flex how good you are at games. Hella great video as always dude! Honestly great video, didnt know about Reaver before this video but looks very fun as i like ultrakill so will prob be checking it out later. Also gotta say, The Fuwamoco clip / meme at 1:30 , and the Gura "A" meme at 4:08 caught me off-guard , was a suprise but a welcome one (also would be funny to see Gura or Fuwamoco play Ultrakill.

Great video as always! But I feel bad for the poor sharpshooter not getting a single mention... Am I the only one who uses it more for the ricochets than exploding projectiles? It's so good when you use it with coins.

I did feel like mentioning the Sharpshooter would either detract from my talk about REAVER's ricochets, or vice versa. However, I agree that its own form of ricochets is not too shabby! I will say, though, that I'd enjoy using it so much more if its auto-aim targeted coins, core ejects etc. before weakpoints, since it'd better encourage ricochet-usage that's as satisfying as REAVER's Echo!

@@sleeper6548 I disagree. You only need a single surface to make use out of it. Even the ground the enemy is standing on will work to get at least two ricochets, and you can increase it with coins. Jump over an enemy, shoot, throw some coins, and you're guaranteed big damage.

Completely different game and genre, but I love the ricochet mechanic in Crosscode, both for combat and puzzles. It's simple but very satisfying, and a lot of the game is designed around it

@@soup9911 Haha, same happened to me. I never heard about it, then I played it and immediately noticed people mentioning it every so often. If you liked it, I really recommend the DLC, and I recommend not waiting too long to play it as it's a direct continuation after the ending and it expects you to remember a lot of mechanics and story details

my favourite game mechanic is also the ricochet, and one of my tasks was to come up with a game and ricochet was the main mechanic, there was a load of different style balls that you would have with each having their own unique skill while requiring the ricochet mechanic to activate or deal damage

He forgot the sharpshooter. The ultrakill revolver that ricochets shots off walls? The one that you can use to bounce your shots off walls to gain additional hitscans? The one that you can use to bounce your shots off of walls, into coins, through enemies, off walls, into coins, and back into enemies? THAT sharpshooter?

He didn't forget the Sharpshooter he left it out for a good reason. Eren made a good call leaving the Sharpshooter out since it'd be fighting the Echo for the wall-based ricochet spotlight (and I personally think it would've lost). Also as cool as you make the Sharpshooter sound the objectively most efficient/damaging way to use it is to literally aim directly at your feet in order to shoot through an enemy and then chuck out a coin for the extra bounce which I think we can agree is kinda boring. Otherwise you're using it for the projectile snipe which obviously has nothing to do with ricochets. With "ricochets" in mind it would be preferable to coin-punch and then Piercer the coin (as Eren clearly showed with one clip) since that's arguably superior both damage and stylishness-wise right? I'm sure you've found yourself doing something similar to this more often than not too! Although the Echo's basic alternate fire only gains additional hitscan headshots off its bounces I personally think the lack of initial auto-aim makes it so much more skill expressive and fun to master as you have full control over the beam and angles. Plus imagine how much cooler it will become later down REAVER's development since the game's only been in Early Access for about a month!

Its 2024 and you dont mention the red revolver, which is ACTUAL ricochet similar to REAVER's kind of ricochet, but it does give a little extra help eith headshots, though next time you talk about ricochet please mention the red revolver if you are talking about uktrakill.

Is there a certain strategy to hit those off the wall shots in reaver? I land off the floor shots amazingly but i struggle with wall shots

In the same way you get a feel for ones off the floor, it'll sorta just come to you with practice. I will admit that hitting wall-ricochets is 80% luck for me though hahaha
