No drawing demo today - I wanted to share my favourite paper with you. This is the paper I love to draw on if I'm making a finished drawing, not for sketching. In this video, join me on a trip to the art store and let's talk PAPER!
This can be an overwhelming aspect of drawing, and I'm not an expert, but through trial and error I've found paper that I love to draw on, so hopefully you find this interesting as well.

my biggest anxiety with life drawing is wasting the paper (kinda silly) but i feel such a pressure when the paper is nice! thank you for sharing your favorite and the pros and cons!

Thank you for watching! I totally relate, it does feel like wasting good paper when you end up with drawings that you're just not going to keep. For me it is a rare chance when a great drawing comes through on good quality paper. But I do have to keep reminding myself of the process, and sometimes it's more important to test and experiment than to be overly concerned with the paper. Just keep drawing! :) ❤

You can get loose newsprint really cheap for around $10 for 10 lbs. in the large size sheets that you use at places that sell packing and moving supplies. They come in a stack and are loosely rolled up. If you like thrift stores you can sometimes luck out and find Strathmore and other art paper that has been donated, usually with only 1 or 2 sheets missing for a couple dollars.

What a great tip Julie! Never thought to check for paper in thrift stores, will keep that in mind! I also have a stack of newsprint that i thought I'd never get through, but I seem to be flying through it very quick lol. Thanks so much for watching the video and commenting! :)

I kind of prefer loose leaf too so I can bring different types of paper with me. If you fold and tear a lot of paper, I would definitely consider investing in a bone folder. Your folds will crease much easier and flatter making them easier to tear, and you won't leave any oil or other residue from your hands and fingers on the paper. :)

Ah. Great advice!! I actually use one that I borrow from a friend, I didn’t have it today, but especially for white paper or very precious paper you want to make sure your hands don’t leave marks. Great tip thanks!! And thanks for watching the vid, appreciate it 😊❤️

You're so welcome. There is probably a much better and more proper way to tear it!! I tend to improvise a LOT. But I like the torn edge. Enjoy drawing on this paper, let me know how you get on! :)

Fabriano Rosaspina is my favourite too! Great minds think alike haha! I don't like their watercolour paper, but their drawing paper is the bomb. What an awesome art store. For me, the closest one of that calibre is 3 1/2 hours away.

@Drawing-Life Год назад
Aha great minds indeed! That's awesome - any advice on what material is best to use on this paper? I tend to use a conte pencil, or a charcoal pencil, or ink.... And yes, there is a small art store closer to me but once a month or so, I drive through to this enormous store,... (and coincidentally, it's called "The Deckle Edge" lol!)

@@Drawing-Life I like using conte, charcoal pencil and compressed on the Fabriano, and sometimes a bit of pastel. I've even thrown a bit of watercolour at it. You can get some cool effects. I'm crazy for creating textures with charcoal.

Thank you for an informative video. I love shop in CT . What is it’s name I would love to visit it when I am there again. Do you have any preferences for toned paper for charcoal drawings.

I'm very intrigued by this paper. I bet it is wonderful for drawing, and it apparently can handle watercolor too, although it's not meant to be watercolor paper. I'm not surprised you didn't like the Arches or Artistico for drawing -- they have sizing and texture that's meant for watercolor. They say you can draw on it, but I don't think it's optimum at all. It's helpful to use a metal ruler to tear the paper, by the way!

@Drawing-Life Год назад
Hi Jenn, yesI've just used it for a portrait and it gives such a wonderful overall look to a finished drawing - I used a conte a paris pencil. Thanks for watching, and the tip for a metal ruler! 😊👍

Dear Siobhan, thanks for all the great videos, just a quick question,dont you find newsprint paper a bit too sliperry?what i mean is that you cant really get the details to stick to the paper and the next layer seems to budge the existing layer. I use newsprint paper for practice but then cant get the desired details specialy when drawing portrait, what is your technique and do you have the same experience?
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life Год назад
Ah great question. For me newsprint is great for expressive drawings where I can really push the charcoal to extremes and make radical marks!! For finer details, and more careful drawings, I would agree with you, the small details and layers don't sit well on newsprint. For those drawings, I will choose a better quality paper. But the question around paper always needs to take into account the drawing medium. For example I find that willow charcoal is "slippery" across the surface of newsprint, and definitely doesn't make for good details, ... whereas compressed charcoal really sticks and sinks into the paper - and if handled well, you can work with compressed charcoal in such a way as to actually get some fine detail along with bold and expressive marks. Something like charcoal pencil can also work well on newsprint. So, it does depend on what you're working with - are you using willow, or vine charcoal? It could be that. If that is the issue, one thing you could consider is using different media in a drawing - start off with willow charcoal for your base gesture, and then work with a charcoal pencil to draw in the details especially if it's a portrait. Not sure if this helps at all, I hope so!!

You mention monotypes. You have any example of your monotype works ?
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 8 месяцев назад
Hi Jerome! Thanks for this .... I don't have examples to show right now, but I could try to make a video about it, the process is so interesting; the results are very abstract though!! haha - I love it as a way to make work, but it might not be for everyone. I've done a series of portraits using this method and it can look very abstracted. I'll make a video when i get back to my studio (currently away for a few weeks)
@jeconquy
@jeconquy 8 месяцев назад
Monotypes are great. Abstract, yes but can also be very figurative as some of Degas’ work. Not an easy process to control but that’s what makes it fun. Would love to see your work, how you work, what material etc. Safe journeys. Until your return. Cheers@@Drawing-Life

do you have a reason you don't use a tear bar?
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life Год назад
No, only reason is I don't have one ! but i like how the paper separates when you tear without one, a bit riskier though!
