I've had the rule book for The Old World for a little while now (thanks to @officialwarhammer) and I've already played my first game (for a battle report!) so it's time to talk about how it compares to the good old days of Warhammer Fantasy. I didn't want a whole new game, but I also knew that there were things that needed to be made clearer this time around. After reading the rules, I'm a happy guy! Some changes are more subtle than others but I think most of them will help us play more straightforward games, while still maintaining the chaos of the games we used to love! Let me know what you think of what I chose, and watch out for a battle report soon!

No Step-Up is a bit crappy, playing 7th Ed with Dwarves in many cases all they could do was huddle behind their shields, and hardly ever got to attack back. Shame that's gone, low Initiative troops will find it hard, I hope points reflect that. Excellent video, thanks for posting.

Well they get great initiative bonuses when charging I know that doesn’t help the stunties but I did play a game against dwarfs the other day and they held there own quite well. Little tanks as alway.

When the Hold Ground result is occur, the loose unit must fall back too, but on 2 inch.

Remember Falling Back in Good Order is just the highest of the 2d6, not both like fleeing.

This was very informative! I haven’t followed the Warhammer Community articles too closely so I wasn’t aware of some of these changes. I like the changes to panic and combat resolution quite a bit. There is still the chance for the dice to betray you and you get run down after a bad combat, but if you narrowly lose one round and your courage wavers, you fall out of line and step back. It’s a third option for how things can resolve which makes it more interesting… plus all your hard work painting a block of troops won’t necessarily get deleted immediately. That’s a win. Thanks for the intel, I’m even more excited to get these books. The only downside is my Night Goblins will now be pretending to be “normal” goblins and what am I gonna do with my squigs??? I’ve seen from the other comments you made your own movement trays. They are fantastic. Have you thought about selling them on Etsy by any chance?

Must confess that will 'miss' point 5 although agree with it. "Funniest" moments was a unit of Dwarf warriors chasing down a unit of Chaos warriors much to the amusement of both me and my opponent.

I was looking through the Skaven army list, and I noticed that Clanrats now have a maximum unit size of 40. I don't think there was a max before? The special rules also only give you a max of one extra rank bonus.

Yep. Personally I’d take them in units of 30 and go 6 wide 5 deep. I feel it’s the best way to run horde units. Will be doing that with my night goblins.

While sadly I don't have my rulebook as of yet to 'follow along' with the changes, what you've gone ahead and listed do all seem like truly positive changes for which I'm thankful for. The only thing I've seen so far that I'm not so much a fan of would be the 'stepping up' mechanic that seems somewhat convoluted. Still, looking forward to the chance to rebuild my Bretonnians and to roll some dice!

Have to agree with this. Unless we are misinterpreting, spears are rubbish against charges. That makes zero sense. I believe this should be FAQ'd. I'm okay with 8 guys dying and only 2 attacks back from a 5-wide unit but some people with books are saying that second row doesn't fight at all if the front row is destroyed.

Interestingly two of these changes are steps in the wrong direction for me. First, I believe magic desrves its own mini-game with some extra decision making (like previously used resource management) rather than flat rolls as if it was just another type of gun or sword. Secondly, the break tests. I think if a player goes to a great length to engineer a huge CR advantage (coordinated charges - I know, impossible to predict in the world of random charges- flanking etc) and does this successfully, he should be rewarded for it by having a vastly incresed chance of breaking the opponent. But as it stands now, it's better to just win by 1 and be lucky (opp rolling above Ld) than execute a perfect coordinated maneuver and have the opponent with an average roll (fall back in good order, with pursuers no longer in the flanks etc). It favours luck over player agency which is exactly opposite of what I expect from a strategy game.

Q: Can a unit near or on the board edge pivot (or wheel) so that part of the unit (or its base) is temporarily off of the board? (p27) A: Yes, though it is not allowed to end its movement with part of the unit (or its base) off the board.

From what I’ve seen… no. Casualties are taken from front ranks. No more step ups Only models in front rank that haven’t died are able to strike back

@@gamestheory3244 and since dwarves are super low initiative, they'll always strike last, so a Vampire Lord is still going to single-handedly wipe Dwarves off the board and they won't ever get swing backs; but atleast they won't run lol. It doesn't seem like anything really changed.

the opponent will just remove models from the back and then kill your wizard. those spells dont say from the front rank.

Old world rules say from The front. If you kill the first rank now with your higher initiative then you don’t get to fight back.

The falling back in good order sounds really good. I'd be keen to introduce these if I'm running older games like 6th-8th ed. Unfortunately my armies are Vampire Counts, Skaven, and Ogre Kingdoms so I'll not be able to try Old World yet.

Nice changes EXCEPT the fifth. With the old rules in combat, even weak units had a chance to win over strong ones, so if the OP Dwarves had a bad turn and the weak Skaven Clanrats had a good turn, they could drive the dwarves away and destroy them. What GW has done with this new rule is that strong units ALWAYS win the overall fight and weak ones ALWAYS lose. I do not like it.

Doesnt it just make the chance for a cheap fodder unit to mow down 30 elites instantly much less likely, not gone completely? If the dwarves fail their leadership roll badly enough your clanrats can still destroy them in the panic, its just more likely that you get to shove them out of position (and if you can restrain your own troops, free them up to do somethingelse next turn

Bad luck is a big part of war. Nothing funnier than watching an entire orc/goblin army flee. Definitely favors the stronger units.

It makes sense under the new victory conditions because you now have the option to break off the fight to pursue other objectives. Staying locked in a fight until one unit is completely destroyed is just one option out of many, and it's not necessarily the best one. Maneuver is more important now, in part because there are more opportunities to do it.
