I personally don’t think the “five minute” rule is a good rule of thumb for herbivorous reptiles, hay eating torts, etc. Pretty much across the animal kingdom, herbivores-and especially grazing herbivores-are gonna be eating constantly. Leafy plants aren’t particularly nutrient or calorie-dense, animals that have adapted to eating them have to eat a LOT of them to stay healthy. Animals that eat hay/vegetation/grass/etc should always have free access to some basic form of that food source, be it a hay bale or a yard full of clean grass. Kenan’s herbivorous and omnivorous torts live outside and have free access to vegetation in their enclosures and the occasional protein snack from the local bug population. But somebody keeping a turtle or tortoise at home should compensate for that lack of available environmental food. IE- I might take away a tort’s pellets or mealworms after 5-10 min, but I wouldn’t take their plate of leafy greens.
@debzacher1332
@debzacher1332 2 года назад
He was just saying he would take away the pellets, but he doesn’t do that with greens. He leaves it in there and I have seen videos where he took it away the next day. He also said he throws things in there like the cactus to supplement their diet.
@ChrisTesch87
@ChrisTesch87 2 года назад
He also limits the amout of Tortoise feed due to the fact its extremely nutrient rich. They could graze all day and never recieve the same amount of nutrients than they get with "5 minutes" of the pellets.
@cartilagehead6326
@cartilagehead6326 2 года назад
@@debzacher1332 yep. This isn’t meant as a criticism of Kenan, just pointing out that the things he does with his breeding colonies in his outdoor enclosures in Florida need to be adapted to your specific animals’ needs and environment

Welcome back, Tom! It is fun watching Kenan feed the critters, but it is also difficult sometimes doing it 1 handed while trying to record as well. I only have a Pug dog now, but in my younger yrs I had a Mexican Red-Legged Tarantula & an Old World Scorpion. They were fun to watch eat. They both ate crickets from the pet store. While working at a pet store, I bred the rats & mice for feeding to not only our snakes & lizards, but for sale to other snake & reptile owners. My grandson had a big Paint Turtle someone got from a pond & gave it to him. Eventually he tired of it & we gave it to a Reptile Store.

Once again Tom asks the relevant question . . . .How do you know how much to feed them? The five minute rule is the first insight I have ever heard of. That is an example of leaders not explaining what thinking they use, but don't share, that makes up their decision making.

Well I have a winged, feathered pterodactyl, aka Bird, a Congo African Grey Parrot. She loves her pellets, veggies and a small amount of fruit and nuts, with an occasional treat of a small amount of scrambled egg. I can relate to the feeding schedule, hers is daily, always fresh water. I keep pellets around for her to eat 24/7. She generally eats those first thing in a.m. snacks during day and right before bed. She maintains her weight, keeps beautifully feathered and is quite happy with her food program. Whether it’s a reptile, bird, fish, mammal or whatever, it’s great to have that supervised experience as a child, to learn about the responsibility for another life and the happiness of another creature. A truly good thing for humans to understand that we must be responsible/care for all our environments, ecology, web of life.

I was curious about this, too. I'm sure there were some arrangements (will, legal document) made for Fred's animals for after he passed away but who knows when we'll hear or see anything about that. It takes months, sometimes over a year, to sort out effects when a family member dies. I asked and someone told me Fred's family was taking care of the animals for the time being. I'm sure they'll probably be dispersed to good new homes but they're obviously NOT all going to the same person! I'd be surprised if Kenan and and Chandler don't end up with some of Fred's animals. Some of them CAN'T be sold and have to be gifted to accredited individuals and organizations -- at least that's my understanding of the law.

I now feed him every 3 days. I keep a bag of cut up kitchen scraps from greens that are healthy for skinks in the freezer. He gets about 2 table spoons per meal from that, with about half a table spoon of Edgard Cooper dog food mixed with some insectivore blend. Then he get extra calcium every week, extra vit D every other week and multivitamin every month. And some snacks just whenever mostly once a week.

I haven’t had any herps for years, but still a fan. I used to keep local turtles (painted and box turtles) frequently. It was kind of a seasonal thing, keep them during the warmer months and then return them to where they were captured. We had a county park nearby that was loaded with wildlife. The painted turtles I would see again frequently, but box turtles are very elusive. I only remember seeing one of the dozens that we released over years again. I never marked them in anyway, but matched up carapace patterns to photos. I also had red-backed salamanders, pickerel frogs, garter snakes, ringneck snakes, milk snakes and brown snakes seasonally. Purchased pets were some newts (Eartern), Western Painted Turtles, a melanistic Eastern Hognose Snake, Canadian Red-Sided Garter Snakes and a Florida Blue-Striped Garter Snake. Contrary to many peoples experiences, the garter snakes were the animals that I had the longest (one for nearly ten years). I used to rear all the food I fed, whether it be earthworms or shiners or toads for the Hognose. The Milk Snakes we’re not kept very long at all, maybe a week or two. Never was able to get any of them to eat, so they were always returned without a meal. The roads were relatively easy to keep, they are very abundant due to the large amount of aquascapes in the neighborhood. I’d scoop them out as tadpoles and feed them pinhead crickets and ants until they were large enough to eat feeder crickets or mealworms. After getting married, spent less time herping until my boys were old enough. We moved to Orlando briefly and they would ask me to get an anole or two off the patio (they were always the invasive brown ones, so I didn’t feel bad bringing them in as pets. That was over 15 years ago and they lost interest in keeping herps. I plan on retiring in less than ten years, so maybe I’ll pick it up again at that point. It can be a time intensive hobby.😁

Where do you want buy your grass pellets? Also, what “greens” do you currently feed your sulcata’s? I have a pair of them (32# each) and just got them eating grass hay (mixed with fresh cut up dandy greens mostly). Summertime they go outside graze freely. Winter they have to be In During cold months. Just curious what else people feed. Would love to add things to their winter diet. Currently do staple of grass hay, dandy’s, various greens of collards, some kale, some bell peppers, some carrots. Occasional strawberry and an apple. (Rare). And where do you get items (food)? I had ordered mazurri tortoise food and they refuse it. Thanks. Just trying to make my guys more comfortable and expand their sort in winter.

I have 2 cats, Smudge and Gibbs, 1 dog, Finn-Stanley, who is my best friend and an umbrella cockatoo. Cats get fed homemade wet food in the morning. They have dry food available all the time and fresh water every day. My dog gets dog food with homemade wet food. He’s picky and only will eat if I sit on the floor with him. My cockatoo eats what ever we do. Tonight he had meatloaf and rice. He also has pellets and sunflower seeds available all the time. He loves fruit smoothies. He likes mashed potatoes. He hates vegetables. He also hates bugs. Screams bloody blue murder if there is a bug on his cage. He’s really a girl. But we were told, when I bought him, that he was a boy. He laid his first egg when he was 25 years old. His/her name is Boo. I bought him/her when he/she was 5 months old. He/she is 28 years old now. I’d like a tortoise.

I have a trio of ackies a pair of bearded dragons 4 ball pythons and two african house snakes. The great thing about feeding the lizards is that where I live I can have a colony of dubia roaches so that saves me a ton of money on food for them because the roaches reproduce so fast that I always have roaches to feed them. The snakes are easier tho because they only eat once a week something about the width of their body :) Keeping reptiles keeps me sane.
