My First Amiga (A500 new to me in 2020!)

Here's my Amiga 500, the first Amiga computer that I have ever owned. Am very glad to add this one to the collection!
I've got a handful of disk based games, some of which work and some that are corrupted, but I've got a few gems in there to play.
I am running this through a consumer Sony set which only has mono so I will be looking to get a cheap adapter and some pc speakers so that I can get stereo sound output (unless of course I happen across a Commodore Monitor that is less than $500!!!)

Yeah I need to check out Moonstone. I see that the boxed copies for PC go for pretty high prices! Thanks for the other tips. Loved Dizzy on my C64

Thanks! Am waiting for a Gotek to arrive but with all the Covid delays impacting global postage I am not sure when it will arrive!

Oh yeah Lotus is pretty awesome. I have a disk for Test Drive as well but unfortunately some sectors are unreadable so although it loads the initial screens, it doesn't go into the gameplay section. Love pinball, will hunt an adf file down for sure later this year!

Shuffle puck cafe was a great game..if you can get a copy. Shadow of the beast 2 was a classic and wonder boy in monster land was good.Another absolute must is treasure Island Dizzy or any other of the dizzy games. One more absolutely brilliant game for the amiga was speedball 2.

I loved the Dizzy games and Speedball 2 on my C64! I have a gotek in the machine now so I can certainly play these! Will have to hunt down a few .adf files. Thanks for the suggestions Andy :)

To think that in US the system sold for PC work only rather than a gaming PC but in Europe the kids jumped on that side of the machine and that pumped new life into the company but it was to late for them they released new types but The PS kicked them where it hurts and ran away with the loot lol. I loved mine I had the monitor as well that improved the graphics you could see the difference. I have been on ebay looking at some some peeps are asking for 500 notes ooofftt

I know, and with Covid the prices of these commodore monitors has gone through the roof! I recently got a composite to HDMI converter (retro tink mini) so I can play it on a flat screen if I want but it still looks better on a crt :D Also have put in a gotek which means I have way more games - I really need to do an update on it. Will give your washing machine soap trick a go - mine is exceptionally yellow so would be good to see if this brightens it up a little! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment

Nice! I live in USA, where the Amiga never sold well, but I'd still love to get one. I know Pit Fighter's not a great game, but I like the intro to this version!

Yeah it's definitely at peak price right now, I missed out on a couple of opportunities to get one cheap this year so in the end I just bit the bullet. It was an eBay pick up only item so that kept the price a $100 cheaper than average. An A600 or A1200 look to be the best options as you can easily install a CF card loaded with games but they are expensive here in Australia right now. Demand is super high! And I agree, the attract mode for Pit Fighter is still pretty cool :)

@@ByteSizeThoughts A1200's are redicuously expensive. I bought 1 for $300.00 not long ago and that was cheap. But yes a CF card with WHD Load is a must.

See if you get washing machine soap powder put it in a bowl of hot water and use the edge of a tea towel it will take the yellow off

Ha, so after I finished filming this I kept going through the disks to find more working games. Then one of the disks must have been dirty and the drive made a loud screeching noise!! Now no disks load at all so the drive heads are out of alignment or are dirty. I think that gotek may be coming sooner rather than later (also because I want to play Stunt Car Racer)

Yes get a Gotek get a buzzer aswell so you know when the diak is being accessed weird without one dont pay £60 for one though buy a cheap standard one it can be flashed with two paperclips easy enough to work with Amiga I will do a video soon.

That's a good tip. I guess without the sounds you wouldn't know if the game was loading! I was thinking of going whole hog with a gotek with OLED status screen and the extra cables in case mine weren't long enough (If I have to get it sent to Oz I want to make sure I only pay shipping once). I got one of those floppy disk cleaners yesterday (looks like a disk but has material in place of the magnetic media) and that has gotten the drive reading disks again at least in the short term.

absolutely - these floppy disks tend to be corrupted more often than not. I've since installed a Gotek though and it's opened up so many more possibilities!
