I had a crack at a backyard ultra and it didn't go to plan
Training for an Ironman is like fighting a gorilla. You don't fight until you're tired, you fight until the gorilla is tried. H. Keddell, 2018.

back yard ultra is something i will never do in my life. I am glad you came out of it without long term damage to your health......as i still wish/dream/plan to do a multistage run/walk north to South across Germany i will do a few practice days with around 8 hours of run/walk per day in 2023....but i will not go without a normal sleeping time...and that is what the main problem of the backyard ultra is.....lack of sleep is the only worse thing to a runner besides running too fast....so be happy and grateful, that you did not go through the night edit: i get it, we live in a new time, nothing of the past is good enough no race is hard enough, no time is fast enough...a race, where all runners are destroyed and called a dnf, that makes it worth while to try to be the last one standing...ok... i get it.... how about longevity in the really long sense, being a runner and consistently run for years and years, like doing a backyard marathon for life.......call me in .....counting 48 years and 2 months with over 5000k in the year 2022.....but staying healthy, injury free with enough sleep and enough energy to repeat in 2023

Wow. Running from North to South would be incredible! Putting 8 hour days back to back will be brutal on your body but like you say, you’ve got 50 years of running to back it up. I get what you’re saying about the gimmicks in a BYU, but having competed in one, I understand what make the event so special. It’s about the community. It’s an opportunity to get together and run with friends for a full day! The camaraderie that is built throughout the day is special and really enjoyable to be a part of. It’s less about the hurt and the dnf and the last one standing, more about pushing yourself in a different way with a great group of friends.

@@runningwithaj i understand what you mean, but after 24 hours, this community thing gets more and more on the backburner and it is all about surviving the next loop, but that is just me, and i am not good with people, they make me anxious and stressed, i need to count all people around me on one hand to feel good. ...about my plans, the 8 hour days are just to get some practice and see how the body reacts. When i go for it, i plan to do 2 12 hour days, and then an 8 hour day, with running parts of 2 / 1 and a half/ 1/ half hour of easy running one hour of pure walking in between and 2 hours of walking each at the beginning and the end of the day. I will also try to find places to sleep in a bed and only carry a tent just in case. I will not run with a backpack, i need to run free. So i will buy a baby jogger from Thule ( the same Pete Kostelnik had, when he ran from Alaska to Florida). I will also cut the run into 2 parts. Living in central Germany the first part will be from the northern most point home to my house, and the second part will be from the southern most point back to my home. Running home will be a huge help to make it I also will give myself the freedom to even interrupt the parts in case of bad weather. I am not in it to do anything special, i just want to walk/run my home country.....if all goes well, i might do it either in 2024 or 2025 ( i know there are no guarantees i am still alive, but i need to be as well prepared as i can, and that takes time)

I think Lazerus Lake the inventor of the backyard ultra format says it well, they are easy until they are not! Frustrating when outside factors disrupt, but you still gave it a crack. I had Herdy's Backyard here in the West last weekend, had grand plans of getting to 24 hours, but only managed the 7. Will do one again, think they are an awesome format. Good luck with your 10k's!

Somehow I missed this video when it came out. Great recap and well done even if it didn't go to plan. I've got my 1st backyard ultra coming in Feb. So your recap has helped give me ideas and insight

That's great to hear. I'm so glad it helped. Make sure you have a good crew to support, and a reclining camp chair. They're the two things that are needed for al BYU competitors. Let me know if you have any questions. You'll love the event. I can't wait till next year!

Absolutely. No matter how far you go, it’s definitely a worthwhile event. The sense of community like nothing I’ve ever seen.
