I actually loved celebrating Christmas in Japan when I was an exchange studenr during high school. Honestly, at first I thought I would be lonely cause I wouldn't spend it with my family. But it turned out really great. First, I was lucky Christmas Eve was on a Sunday. So, no school during the day. Secondly, my host mum said I could invite some friends over and have an okonomiyaki party, which was so fun. After that my host sister made a christmas cake which was so delicious! And lastly, we took a walk an went looking at the christmas light decorations that was put up around the city. It was simple but cozy and I was so happy. Last year, I actually gave sort of back the nice gesture by inviting a Japanese friend from uni over to celebrate Christmas with my family. She got to experience a very traditional Finnish Christmas Eve with the food, presents and all. We even baked a lot of ginger breads and all so she could get the full Christmas spirit 🥰 She was really happy and we where so glad she liked it.

Hey, its 2 months late but IMO its NEVER a bad time to talk about Japan and Christmas celebrations! Thanks for making this video and sharing some of the things you did during the holiday season. Japan definitely seems a lot different than the US and UK for the holidays but I think it's neat to see how other cultures celebrate the holiday.

The whole Christmas on the 24th is actually also how it is here in Germany too and probably where Japan got it from. Difference being that while the main church ceremony and getting the presents happen on the 24th, the 25th is still technically Christmas Day. For us it was a day where you eat a kinda big breakfast with your family and spend the time inside chilling doing nothing. When i was a kid that was the day i got to finally try out the toys i got. The thing is we actually also have a second Christmas Day, literally called "second Christmas Day", which is probably supposed to give you more time in form of a federal holiday. For us it was always 24th with close family, 25th evening with Grandparents Nr.1, then 26th with Grandparents Nr2.

Hey Emirichu! I am from Germany and I could already tell from your Christmas Market Videos that this is not a real Christmas market. I mean maybe they interpret them a little different in Japan but in Germany there is much more then just stands with the same food. The Christmas Markets here are way better I could already tell from the videos. There are much more stands with different foods, stands with jewelry, stands with games, stands with hot drinks, Ferris wheels and much more! You should definitely come here in winter and go to the “Kassel Weinachtsmarkt” if you want to visit a real one. I think that is the most christmassy Christmas Market ever here in Germany. There is also a Santa Clause which flies over the market in his sleigh and tells a story. The atmosphere is also much more different. I would be thrilled to see your reaction to a German Christmas market someday. I hope you are doing well!

christmas in japan is exactly what halloween feels like to me. I get so hype for two whole months and then the day rolls around and of the kids who celebrate very few actually trick-or-treat and all the halloween parties happen on the weekend before so i just invite whoever is available to hang out and eat candy with me.

I once loved Christmas a lot, it was my most favorite season of the year. But the thing is my parents stop buying me gifts in Christmas, they thought that we lost the Christmas spirit. I was the only one in the family that didn’t lost the Christmas spirit.

I honestly loved the Yokohama Christmas festival! They have a bunch of stalls and lights, as well as a big christmas tree, and the red brick buildings all around makes it feel very comfy and christmasy. It was also only like ¥300 to enter if you get the app. There was also an outdoor ice skating rink right next to it for only like ¥500 plus rentals which was super fun! I would go again just for the skating honestly, and the market was a huge plus.

merry christmas emirichu!! if you ever have the opportunity to go to the philippines during Christmas time (september to december), i highly recommend it! celebrations start around September, ramp up after halloween, and get insane on the actual day. very bright and fun! the enthusiasm sounds really up your alley. there's also the plus of a jollibee being around every corner since you apparently love it so much 😂

Azabu Juban has a Christmas market annually, from what I remember, it's pretty legit...and really expensive. But we have hot Christmases in Australia so it's not really a great indicator. Though it was definitely better looking than the Coldplay concert you went to lol. Ebisu Gardens is also pretty Christmasy. They usually put up a giant tree at the square there and it's more romantic for couples.

idk if it's just me, but as a latin-american, i grew up also treating christmas eve as the big day. that's when we'd party, eat, and open gifts at midnight. christmas day was just the rest day (esp for those who drank a lot LOL) since most businesses close that day here in america. i never knew how opposite it was here until i grew up and would hear my other american friends mention it. the latinos i knew, though, treated christmas the same way i did. my mother would say it was always celebrated on christmas eve in her home country rather than on the 25th, too. it's interesting how many ppl and countries have different ways of celebrating it.

It's the same in Germany. Everything builds up to the 24.December. We even do Adventskranz where you light a candle every Sunday in the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. Then you have a feast with your family, exchange gifts and swear to never eat anything ever again. The next day everything is over. You might visit some relatives but at midnight on the 24. Christmas is over.

This was truly her first Christmas in Japan.

This video was released right on the day before my birthday, I’d say lucky timing! I had a conflict with friends on my bday, but I got it resolved later. This video lifted my mood up while I was recovering from it. Thx Emily! Love your videos!

its actually not as big of a surprise that all of the christmas celebrations are focussed on christmas eve if you think about it a bit. japan has a very high affiliation with germany so many of their christmas traditions are similar to german ones (for example christmas markets). In germany, christmas is mainly celebrated on christmas eve, with christmas day being more of a "Meat with your family and have some food that takes like 5 hours to make"-kind of day. but the actual christmas celebrations are very much focused on christmas eve. the second chrstmas day may as well just not exist, except for the fact that they are all holidays so you dont go to work. we do however have christmas sweets in store for a bit longer. Also what you said about Christmas Markets is already a big part of it in germany too. its expensive food that is pretty hit or miss across the board, a lot of stands that sell mulled wine or mead (those are my personal favorite) and some stores with novalties, mostly crafted stuff, candies some crystal stores stuff like that. in germany christmas music on the markets isnt all that common, its mostly just silence because the music you do have at certain spots doesnt travel very far. you get some performances, one near where i live had a small stage for a long time, some have fire performances, but its mostly a spot to just wander around, look at the stores that sell crafted items and enjoy the occasional glass of hot alcohol or punch and some other foods (chestnuts are something that i associate very strongly with it). its a neat experience but not something i would reserve for a special day like christmas eve, the best thing about them is just that they are always there to get you in the christmas mood. (at least for me, i have one thats pretty close so i pass through it multiple times throughout the month when i just do my usual grocery shopping and i always slow down to look at the stuff i can find. christmas overall is a really social holiday over here, i think the best way to think of it is a blend between american christmas in the way we actually celebrate it, but in the traditions sorrounding the actual holidays its more like what you experienced in japan
