For any newbies reading this, he should have had his DDRT setup and utilized it as a back up system while spurring up the tree. If you're going to learn to spur climb without formal instruction, make sure you first know how to set up your safety systems.

Absolutely !!! Safety is a must !! that tree looked pretty dried up too .. Guys RU-vid is Great if your new to this he can learn so much about climbing before you even get into a tree ! at least you can get an idea of what to do and expect Have fun and BE safe !!

“NEVER” hug the tree with a slip, and train your mind with every step to keep your down leg gaff at a 45 deg. angle, ready to pierce back into the trunk upon a slip. But for this to work, trust your lanyard and keep your body at about the same angle. Hugging the tree trunk will set you up for a gaff out, and a fast elevator ride, resulting in some serious face and chest splinters. I was taught as a lineman by the best, and started climbing in 1981. Take it slow, and again, learn to trust your equipment as though each individual piece is an extension of your body, and never take “any” situation for granite. Enjoy

for the first time, this was really nice. little tip: when you flip up your line look out for your knees to be completely straight. When they are bend, and you move your body forward the angle of the spike changes downwards the tree and the start to lose grip. and you also can try to stick in the spikes a little bit more right and left so you dont have to turn your feet all the time and due to the wider standing you have more tability if the tree isnt completely straight :) stay safe

Good video Sir and well done on your first climb. I will be attempting my first climb soon. I have only cut trees from the ground so far. I have watched at least a 100 you tube vids and obviously there are some that make it look very easy, so I also look at the " I will buy a saw and take a tree down" vids to come back to reality. There are so many ways that Loggers use to take down a tree but the one thing in common is the clean face cut and a horizontal back cut. To all the Professionals out there I am not, I am a Builder but have a small woodland and gained all my knowledge and confidence to even think of felling a tree from watching You Tube. The first vids that saw the Loggers had a set of spikes and 1 flip line, later on they started using 2 flip lines a 2 in 1 as it is called. Its lie all health and safety even in building. Certain Jobs for certain people. I have been on building sites and no matter how much health and safety there is always some one that should not be there simply for the safety of the others. Health and safety is not a bad thing but it has taken thinking out of the equation. I agree with a 2nd flip line or tie in point but what did the first person that used spikes do? did they ask for some one experienced to show them the ropes? Having some one show you how to do it properly and safely cuts outs a long learning curve. Some times one has to try things to see if its for us. I dare say that there are not many Brain surgeons or Accountants watching this and thinking, I will give that a go. And I am neither a Brain surgeon or an Accountant but I want to try climbing a tree.

Hey man good video. I climb just like that. I believe if i fall out of a tree its because the tree failed. You can move your anchor on the spar so you can repel any time its just moving it with your flipline. Dead pines are scary. Humble beginnings dude.

Good to see you set a climbing line after the cut out. I've been climbing for almost forty years and it's extremely rare that I go aloft without setting a climb line first. On your cuts, step up a little higher and try to keep your saw where you can two hand it. I always tell new climbers, low and slow, learn to trust your gear, get comfortable and confident with it close to the ground. A fall from that height would have wrecked your confidence and your body. Do what I say, not what I did. My first climb? A 60 foot free climb without using a lanyard. Stupid? Yep. In those days you were considered a wuss if you safetied off before you got to working height. Looked like you were wearing tree gaffs, you might want to try pole gaffs on thin barked trees, keeps you closer and more "in touch" with the tree. Good luck to you and have fun!

Do not "one hand" the saw. I go up on the spikes then choke off a line around the tree [with a notch quickie] then sort of half support myself from it. It feels really stable then.

Thanks for the video. Tuefelburger MultiSaver is a very useful device for choking the stem in conjunction with your lanyard. The two can be flipped up together. If you have a slip, it will arrest. I never go up on lanyard and spikes alone. I think this is now taught for climbing tickets?

For a first time climb the guy did great . I am a fit guy . And doubt I would do as good as this man did . I might get so nervous even though I am not afraid of heights. I would be thinking hope my spikes are going in deep enough the whole way up . Then I would still need to start my chain saw. I had pulled up already pulling it up over a branch .

steel core fill line definitely worth it , being tied in twice is good practice ,I grew up in western Washington and kinda thought myself as well and never thought about two tie points until really recently because I didn't know any better anyway good climbing stay safe and just take your time it's your life don't push it for anything or any body

A prussik or a biner across the belt makes a nice squeeze...stops any drop on gaff-outs...better to squeeze the tree than have an a**hole squeezer on the way down...great job though on first run...stay 5 or 6 feet off the ground until you are more comfortable and confident...no need to push any limits going up too high too early

What you experienced is “gaffing out” when your spurs slip out and you fall it is pretty common even with people who have used them a long time it becomes less common but every now and then I’ll gaff out but it’s normal and when you’re climbing with them try not to be so nervous because it makes it harder but be safe and climb high!

Very good for your first spur climb bloody hell, I have done six spur climbs so far and have probably got to about 35ft, My goal is to get to 100ft within a year, Then it will make me more confident going into this profession, Any advice from the pros would be great, For some reason the Caribeanor on the flip line keeps slipping on the gate and it scares the hell out of me, it's happened a few times, any advice? Side note I am using DMM oval Caribeanor! Flipline is Komet!
@bennettfranz8939
@bennettfranz8939 2 года назад
First thing 35 feet 100 no difference you die ether way. Anything above 20 feet consider a death fall. Sounds scary but it helps me contend with large heights. And get a steal core with steel clip on the end. The gate never walks and being steel the gate is strong enough. Or just get a steely for your existing flip line. Plus the extra weight will help throw your line around the tree. Remember don’t only use one rope have your climbing line backing up you flip line.
@sebvaughan6149

Yeah I use to flip lines, trying to work out how to make a sinched anchor point so it will catch me, they make loads of vidios on RU-vid about flip lines but not enough about how to have a fall arrest device

Man I remember my first time. Bundle of nerves. I had a line in the tree with a prusik and still crazy. Been looking into SRT since it just looks faster but ive also seen people fall because the 1 line didnt hold them. Slipping or falling vs slow or fast. Im ok with slow :)

Great 👍 video informative for a guy like me . What type of equipment are you using? Are you still climbing 🧗‍♀️ trees 🌳 and are you selling any of your equipment? What type of chainsaw would you recommend for a small home 🏡 user with 4 trees 🌳 and 2 palm trees around 20-25’ft
@bennettfranz8939
@bennettfranz8939 3 года назад
Good job conquering your fears but…..Where a hard hat, DONT CLIMB ALONE EVER, bring a hand saw, on a small trunk like that put you climbing line around the truck under you flip line with a half twist, this will catch you Immediately when you slip. When doing your cutting go all the way up on top the limb (most the time things go wrong when the climber is scared to go all the way up or out and try to take a short cut) next you should always make a face cut and yell Headache. Finely when descending in flip or fully slack out you flipline and kick off the tree every 8 feet or so. And you need to learn friction hitches before buying a zig zag.

@@RagedContinuum - you set a false crotch below your lanyard and run a DDRT setup into the false crotch. Along with the fall safety aspect of doing this, it also allows for a quick descent. The most common reason that arborists point out is insect attacks when you disturb their nest

You should always have an experienced climber to show you how to do it safely and teach you your first few times up a tree, learning on your own doing this kind of stuff can be fatal.
