I am very excited to have finally acquired my first Commodore VIC-20!
This machine passed me by back in the day as by the time I was able to get a micro in the home it had been replaced by the Commodore 16 so I was very keen to get one. It needs a bit of TLC and was sold "untested" so will it even work? Find out! :)

Took me a while but I finally have a Commodore VIC-20 in my possession. This machine isn't one I had much experience with but I remember a school friend having one. I am looking forward to exploring this machine and what it can do! 👍😀

That specific datasette there I believe is the US version. I have one and it's more reliable than any others I've ever tried. It seems to use a different head than the majority of others and seems to load very difficult tapes with some ease. There is a pot inside the rf demod which you can adjust to brighten up the picture when using the din output as it maybe quite dark if not. Adrian Black has mentioned and shown this a few times. Yes, the din port closest to the cart slot is the video out.

Great info! Yes I saw Adrian’s video and I will explore that once I get inside. We got confused with the cable because (of course) the one I had had an s-video pin for the C64 and C16 so wouldn’t work with the VIC as it doesn’t have native S-video.

What makes you think it is the US version Andrew - are there some giveaways that make it so?

I had a look at the bottom and it says “Made in Taiwan”. Were CBM devices for the US market not made in the US? It certainly doesn’t look like the standard datasette, the label looks different to me. 🤷

I don't remember anyone owning a VIC20 when I was a kid? A few friends had C16s, most had C64s, one had a C128D (posh git).

Yeah I got the C16 on release year in 1984 and was aware of the VIC-20, as I said a vague memory of a school friend having one on a desk but that was it. I lot of kids at my school had the C64 and of course the ZX Spectrum.

I had a friend that had a VIC-20, at the time I had an Oric-1 and the posh boys in the street had a Spectrum..trying to remember, possibly around 1981/2?
