I took advantage of the lovely weather to clean up and restore my recently acquired Commodore VIC-20 and to add some overheating protection to those delicate chips. Let's hope it all works afterwards!

Hi and thanks for watching! I think my small example of "sunbriting" has been quite a success. I am not huge into retrobriting unless it's really bad, I like to see a bit of wear and tear on these old machines. I am going to have to try and hook up the VIC to a better screen to try and see if the video output is OK or maybe ask Noel ;)

I always love a VIC-20 video because it's a machine I know absolutely nothing about. Great job on the cleanup, what a transformation! Loving the new studio setup too, it's looking very professional 👍

Great stuff. The cardboard RF shields remind me of the old aluminium foil takeaway containers. C= knew how to do things on the cheap. :)

Very cool! Cleaned up nicely! Regards yellowing - sunlight (UV) does de-yellow on its own, as you found - but the key to re-yellowing (from my experience) is lack of UV. ie. in a dark room, loft, box, room without natural light etc. because there's no UV it goes yellow again quite quickly =/ I've had 3 or 4 things go super yellow when away from natural light after having previous spent time de-yellowing them. Artificial light may help though.

Very nice restoration! Looks much better now. I've been really enjoying the VIC-20 even though I didn't know too much about it initially, but I definitely have more VIC-20 in my future 😃

Hi, nice video on the VIC, it was my first computer as a kid and currently have two at the moment. Phil at Retroleum is really helpful and I get a lot of stuff from him, he matched a missing key and also picked up a plunger and spring, for my VC labelled VIC 20 . There are lots of good games for the VIC, Jetpack is my favourite.

Loving my Vic20. Programming is a lot like the other 8 bit commodores. Except the screen dimensions are flexible, which is pretty cool.

That cleaned up nicely. Looks to me the system is working fine. Frantic does seem to have these featureless glitchy looking sprites.

custardo. i watched his video about hooking c128d up to vga, then I saw mark did something similiar he actually used rgb though. After pulling my amiga out after a decade those monitors are too tiny and after realizing i need to look into getting that rigged onto my larger multisync how did you guys all go about doing that with the commodore ?

The VIC 20's output is always bad or at least, I've never seen a VIC 20 with good image quality. It's hard to judge how your sprites are looking from the distance and the angle in which you are filming the screen, but I assume that they are looking fuzzy and pixelated, at least in parts. They always do, that's part of the VIC 20's "charme". I guess you could try Noel's mod, but to be honest, I wouldn't.

Yeah I think you may be right. I did notice that text looked pretty good which probably indicates there isn’t a problem like Noel had and the rest is by design 😆
