Kolkata is a dirty polluted and untidy city as before. While other Indian cities have improved, Kolkata has not. The political parties in power in Kolkata are corrupt. West Bengal government leaders and ministers only know how to steal government money. This state needs a political change.

Often times when I watch Western vloggers visiting foreign countries, especially in the global South, there is an air of cultural superiority they give off and I feel like it blinds them from the charm and beauty of these places and people. You shouldn't have donated any money to those "strangers" in the temple. These money will never go to the temple nor will be used for charity. They've a tendency to demand money and you being a foreigner they're exaggerating the amount. Whenever you visit next time remember the pandas in Kalighat temple have an inherent tendency to demand money, no locals would have entertained them. Nevertheless happy journey.

You have choosen the right way to explore kolkata. It is famously said in Bengali " তুমিও হেঁটে দেখো কলকাতা " which means "you also walk through kolkata" to better know the city. Each and every lanes, streets, old buildings of kolkata showcase the rich diverse culture of the city and obviously the city will give you the original colour of indian freedom struggle durihg british colonial era because most of the revolutionaries were Bengali & from Kolkata.

As a west bengali, i would suggest you to visit the rural part of Bengal. you can also visit the delta of Ganga. Digha, a popular sea beach or Darjeeling ( Queen of hills).

You went to New Market area but not into the original New Market ( previously known as Hogg Market ) which was opened 150 years ago in 1874. It is utterly fascinating and has been since my first visit in 1959. As for the city in general, it is THE City of Joy
You are walking by the most crowded parts of Calcutta, full of Muslims from other Hindi speaking States. Should've visited South Calcutta with it's Art Deco buildings & North Calcutta with rows & rows of Colonial era buildings & narrow lanes.

I was told to stay inside till around Noon and then go out. You would think the air would be cleaner overnight or early in the morning but that is not the case. There are now many PM 2.5 measuring stations around the city so you can find out just how awful the air is.
