@@thescottishdetectorist My son went detecting down the sides of a secondhand sofa, he found 2 sovereigns, then he built me a gaming PC, which cost me another 2 sovereigns. Within a couple of months of careful CURRENCY management, I detected another 2 sovereigns at my local coin shop. Am I getting through to anyone?

The 1939 shilling would be 50% silver. I remember the 1970’s in my teens getting into coin collecting and even then, post-decimalisation, regularly coming across sixpence, shillings and florins from pre-war years in general circulation - they were probably barely worth more than face value as silver prices were obviously very low. How times change - now they are treasure waiting to be detected and re-discovered. Thanks for the entertaining video and congratulations.

Congratulations on the gold! But a question... being in the U.S. I'm still a bit confused by the whole legal aspect to all this. Since this is gold what is the rule? Can you keep it or is it taken by the crown? Does it just have to do with how old it is or is it just gold... woosh off to the government? I pray you got to keep it. How about a hammered gold? Might be nice to do a video for we fans across the pons so we can get a better idea of what is a keeper, what, at least potentially isn't, etc. I'd love to detect over there some day, no idea if it will ever happen, but be nice to know what, if anything I find I could keep.

Hi Daniel. In Scotland I’d it is over 300 years old you have to report it to the museum in the case of this coin it isn’t old enough so it’s mine to keep and share 50/50 with the landowner. If you do find something over 300 years old it goes to Edinburgh and they decide if it is to be claimed by a museum. Many items over 300 years old aren’t, but if it is claimed then the finder is rewarded financially with the market value in cash which is then split 50/50 with the landowner. Hope that cleared it all up. I hope to do a video on it all soon! Thanks for watching

Judging by bent coin I think farmer hit cash bag or box or stashed cash or cache . But you need do the whole field by looking at where bent coin was found and gold coin as that be direction plow was dragging it OR PASSED over the stash and dragged up sack bent it . So look right there but dig deep

I don’t understand why coins are in the middle of the field? Have you investigated the historical history of that field ?
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist 2 года назад
All of the fields we detect were farmed and harvested by hand until the advent of tractors, so around the 1940’s / 1950’s so as a result we find lots of coins and buttons! As for this particular field we’ve discovered it was a rifle range from around 1905 until 1950 including through the two wars but was also used for rifle, grenade and mortar practice and was used by British, Polish, Canadian and American troops. I often wonder given the date of that gold coin if it was to be taken to the front by a soldier during ww1. I’m lead to believe British troops often took silver and if they could afford it gold coins as they could be spent in France and Belgium due to their bullion value? Today different fields but we got 10 coins between two of us in 4hrs, so there were lots of coins dropped by people over the centuries!

Thanks for the kind words and I’m glad you enjoyed watching. This fields been heat and to think for about 20yrs I avoided it because it had previously had poly tunnels on it and I thought it would be full of screws nuts and bolts and not worthwhile. This year it’s set aside and look what we discover 🤩

Do you think,them coins were hidden in that field and over the years the plough has moved them about?
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist 3 года назад
This field was a shooting range pre-WW1 until around 1949/50 so lots of soldiers and local home guard were training here and then national service after ww2

You've probably been asked before, but why are there coins in a crop field?
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist 3 года назад
This was an old military range pre World War One until about 1949. Plus all the fields were farmed by hand up until 1930/40’s so lots of losses from farm workers anyway
@paulmellish9785
@paulmellish9785 3 года назад
Congrats on the gold it seems to me that the land you are detecting on at some time must of been a military training area during the First World War and pre 2nd World War I bet the guy who lost that gold was gutted as it must of been a lot of money at that time
@thescottishdetectorist
@thescottishdetectorist 3 года назад
Definitely. I know for a fact there was a shooting range in the neighbouring field from around 1910 until the late 1940’s. Several military badges and buckles plus the other military bits and pieces but this neighbouring field which I’ve always avoided due to having once had metal Berry tunnel frames on it (with lots of associated lost nuts and bolts!!) has clearly been used for exercises or even camping around the period of WW1 going by all of the George V coins, including the gold! I’m sure there’s lots more to be had... maybe even some more gold!!!

Curiosity ,, Is it just a plain 1919 ---- or ----- 1919 H ----- or ----- 1919 KN ---------- Coin collector -- Vancouver

Which coin? I’m not entirely sure to be honest. I’ll need to get a loop and get back to you!
@stefkuna

@@thescottishdetectorist It's a good question -- the 1919 penny might have a mint mark in tiny lettering to the left of the date. KN is Kings Norton mint, H is Heaton mint - both are rarer and more valuable than the plain version.
