My first gas heater install - Mr.heater Big Maxx garage heater $399 from Menards

This was my first gas line / heater install. I lucky had the help of my pops which has done gas line work before. We got the whole thing done in about 3 days. But we had to run 65ft of 1/2” gas line! Also just scooped an electric threader from harbor freight which help speed things up a little bit. Which actually works great! $229!
Well in conclusion it took about 2.5 hours to heat the garage up to 70 degrees without the ceiling being insulated. So stay tuned for a follow up video. I will be installing r38 batt insulation in the ceiling. Should be like a sauna after that!

With that exhaust tubing going straight out and up. Won't the condensation drain back into the elbow?

Can you exhaust with a vent pipe out the side of your garage instead of out the roof?

Nope roof was the only option on that side of the garage.

Thanks for taking the time to record your installation. (Another Michigan viewer - east side down just north of Detroit) As much as I know gas is the cheaper route, I've been contemplating just going with an electric for a while.... omitting the gas run and venting. Recently changed my mind again - back to gas, as the more videos and info I got on the COST to run electric seems to be sooo much higher than cost of gas . I like your choice in the Menards 50k BTU Mr. Heater unit. Hope you cooked dad a nice steak for all the help. 😉👍🏻

Sure did pops is a wealth of knowledge and very great full for his time and patience. But yeah gas is kinda pain to install. But pays off quick with the cost to run it. Good luck on yours!

Just bought the same heater and was about to run it the way you did , but after doing some research, gas line not like water , you can't just tap in anywhere... there's a gas chart , based on line size , length and btu's My guess is your under sized .. Heater 50btu my guess is water tank is at least 30 so that's 80 .. based on the chart you'd only be able to supply 20 feet of pipe at 1/2 .. and that's from your main meter from the house . Not sure how far your water tank is from the main and if anything else is being supplied off that line , my case my dryer shares , so I had to install a tee off my main outside and start a whole new run .. I'm sure this is working just fine , just a warning for others watching

People need to know if they have a high pressure system also from what I understand. Also the elbows affect the gas pressure. There's a formula of how many affect a drop. I just put a furnace in my detached garage and did lots of studying. Our old house had a gas dryer at one time. I used that as my feed. Im no gas expert just a dude that slogged away on my own like you. Glad it worked out!

I just completed installing the exact same heater in almost a duplicate scenario. My tools are red, yours are yellow. Got to the turn on stage and nothing. I have electric to the unit and the supplied tstat wired up. Nothing. I even jumpered the red and white wires, still nothing. I ran 3/4" gas line to it but the unit doesn't even cycle. This is an electric ignition unit so no pilot light correct? Any ideas?

Take the side panel off were the internal gas valve is. See if the valve is on the on position.

The heater you installed has a powered vent. That means the exhaust gas is higher pressure than the pressure in the garage. This is different from your water heater which is natural draft. In the water heater the chimney effect causes the pressure in the exhaust pipe to be slightly lower than atmospheric pressure. So, if there is any leak in the exhaust pipe of the water heater, garage air will flow into the exhaust pipe through the leak, which is not a problem. Most importantly, any carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas cannot get into the garage because the exhaust gas pressure is lower than the atmospheric pressure in the garage. Conversely, if there is a leak in the exhaust pipe from your garage heater, the exhaust gas being at higher pressure than the garage, will cause exhaust gas containing carbon monoxide to leak into the garage. Obviously, not good. To make your heater safe, special exhaust pipe with rubber gaskets at each joint is required. Typically, this type of exhaust piping is stainless steel and relatively expensive. But, since you have such a short run of exhaust pipe, the total cost won't be too bad, probably about $100 -200. If you check the installation instructions for your garage heater, I think you'll find this type of exhaust piping is specified by the manufacturer.

@@2acres933 The special exhaust pipe I referred to is Category 3 safety vent pipe. Here's some useful information on this exhaust pipe: The stainless steel heater vent pipe is available in several different sizes and lengths. If you do not find the exact length needed, adjustable length pipes are also available. Vent pipe and fittings feature patented built-in mechanical locking band and triple-lipped directional gaskets. All pipes and components are engineered with smooth clean welds located 90° from mechanical locking bands. All pipe and fittings are UL1738 approved for category II, III and IV venting applications. Category 3 Gas Heater Vent Pipe and Fittings What is UL 1738? In short, it is a US standard for gas venting systems required in category III applications. Category III refers to positive vent pressure which is created by exhaust blowers in unit heaters. These vent systems must be constructed of AL29-4C® stainless steel, contain gaskets for sealing, and have a built in mechanical locking band among other requirements. Features Made of AL29-4C® super-ferritic stainless steel Built-in high temp silcone gaskets for air tight seal Built-in locking band to insure a secure fit (no hardware needed) UL1738 approved forcategory II, III and IV appliances. I just installed the same heater. Per the mfg instructions, the heat is to be installed with NFPA or ASNI approved type B-1. So you don’t need class 3 as stated above.
