HOW TO INSTALL A GAS HEATER IN A SHOP PART 3 FIRING IT OFF, AND ITS WIFI CONTROLLED
Alright welcome back everyone for yet another video. This will be part 3 and the final video for my gas shop heater install. Covid slowed my process way down, but I was able to pull through and finish it off. In this video I’ll be installing the final portion of my gas line the 3/4” flex line the hooks the heater up to the 1” black iron supply line, the 4” category 3 vent pipe, and a wifi thermostat, then firing this heater off for the first time! On top of all that i’m going to give you an honest review of what I think of this Mr. heater big maxx 125,000 shop heater. So sit back and enjoy! I just watched about a dozen videos of DIY installs for Big Maxx heaters before I got to yours. You're the only one that didn't completely screw up the vent installation, along with a bunch of other stuff. Kudos to you for investing the time, materials, effort and research to do the job right! Really enjoy your videos. Don’t forget that you need some combustion air to vent properly. Maybe that garage door leak you mentioned is a blessing in disguise as it may allow for enough combustion air.

you can go buy catgeory 3 vent pipe without a hvac license. Menards stocks it for horizontal venting.

That’s good to know that’s an option in other locations. Unfortunately where I live you need a license to purchase cat 3 pipe. We don’t have Mernards here either. 😂

First of all, great video. Thank you! I have a question about the vent slope. You mention it sloping down/away from the heater, which makes perfect sense to me... but the Mr Heater manual suggests the opposite. Can you provide any additional info? Thanks again.

Thanks man! Yeah that’s a great question, and I questioned that in the manual too. They show installing a drip tee (I think that’s what they called it), but I wasn’t going to install one. So I didn’t want any potential condensation draining back into my unit and eventually on my floor. I believe they have you do that for the potential of Co gas leaking into your building, but there is an exhaust fan blowing that out, and my run of exhaust pipe is fairly short and I wasn’t concerned about that. My buddy that works in the hvac field said he always slopes them away from the unit and outside, and my inspector had no issues with that. Hope that answers your question, and thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video series. I'm going to buy 2 of the 80,000 BTU units for my shop. The manual says I need to have 8 feet of space below the heater (to the floor), and 8 feet from combustible material below it. You didn't follow those guidelines. I can't imagine it getting hot below the heater if the vents aren't pointing right at something combustible. Even then, it would be almost impossible to cause a fire like that. My floor will be about 6 feet from the bottom of the heater. You ever notice any issues with that (excessive heat or fire danger)? I think that must be the dumbest requirement for installation. Heat rises, yet the heater can be 1 inch from the ceiling, but has to be 8 feet from the floor.... What are your thoughts? Thanks again. Mike

Thanks for watching man! I’ve had zero issues with the sides being hot. It’s fully insulated so the sides of the heater aren’t even hot to the touch. The 8’ guideline must be for moving equipment like vehicles or something. I had everything inspected and the inspector never mentioned anything about it.

I have a 30 x 40 woodworking shop that I am looking to heat. I have a few questions. First, do you have any trouble with saw dust getting in the heater? I was looking at heaters that have a sealed combustion chamber, but I'm not sure that I need that. Second question is what made you decide to get the 125k BTU unit vs the 80k btu? I live in NW Ohio and was looking at the 80k BTU unit. Thank you!

I’ve had this heater installed for 2+ years and dust hasn’t been an issue. I will say that I blow it out with compressed air or a leaf blower twice a year just as a maintenance thing. But it’s no biggie. I went back and forth on the 80k and this one for awhile, and I consulted with a friend in the industry and he said I would be happier with this size. And I’m glad I went with it. It maintains the heat in my shop very well. I’m in Washington state and we at times get fairly cold winters ( below zero) at times. I hope that helps. 🤘🏻

I did my own install minus the gas line, had the unit sitting up there mounted on the ceiling for a couple weeks (did some wood work so some dust may have made it up there). Wondering if you had the burnt dust smell on the initial start up?

Yeah every year I get that a little. I try and blow it out with the leaf blower before I use it every season.

Interesting about needing a license for the class III pipe. Question about mating the pipe up to the back of the heater. Did that 45 just slip over the vent pipe on the heater? I've been looking at my local menards where they sell all the class 3 vent pipe to complete the run and I can't find any pipe or adapter or coupling that actually fits over the output on the heater.

I'm having the same issue.. I've purchased 2 different pieces I thought might work, but they're the same diameter. I'm stuck because I can't find that one piece to attach to the flue transition in the back of the heater.. Can you tell me what your remedy was..?

@@JoHa-dl5zr I contacted Mr. Heater over it and after talking about the issue with a tech support guy we concluded that there's actually no adapter piece that you can buy separately that works. There is one in a photo of a kit I found on Amazon but you have to buy the whole kit. So I ended up just buying a 4" appliance adapter from menards, tore off the metal straps, used vent screws to fix the adapter to the flue output, and fitted my vent run from there. It's been working all winter just fine.

I got all my pipe from a gas supply store in my area called Ferguson, and the thimble was supplied from a buddy of mine who works for an hvac company in my area. I wasn’t able to buy the venting materials because I don’t have a gas license.

How does your fan blow on this thing? I made the mistake of only getting an 80K BTU, I don't have in floor heat and when it's -30 below outside I struggle to maintain temp. I should have gotten the 120Kbtu. Your heat exchanger isn't glowing red I take it?

It moves quite a bit of air, definitely plenty for my 30’x40’ shop. Yeah I’ve never seen my heat exchanger glow at all.

@@brewbuilds I can tell they have a different fan blade design looking at the 125K units, that's alot of heat, has to move air. Some 50 and 80's come out of the box with heat exchangers glowing red. Not normal at all, dangerous, even with proper setup and installation.

I’ve been really happy with this unit. I would not like seeing the heat exchangers glowing red. I mostly just use mine only when I’m out in my shop, but I painted the inside of my shop at the beginning of the year and the outside temps were in the single digits so I let the heater run for 3 days. Obviously it didn’t run continuously, but I had it maintain my shop at 70 degrees.

I don’t. I almost included that in the video. It’s actually really easy. The directions that come with the ecobee thermostats are really good. Did you have a particular question about it?

what size heater for what size space. i have a 1000 sq ft shop, iam thinking 60000 btu heater. is that close?

I have the 125,000 BTU unit, and my shop is 30x40 so 1200sq/ft.

I didn't realize you need to have a licence to buy the vents. Are you allowed to install all of the gas lines yourself? In my area i think you need a licensed gas fitter to install the lines

So it kinda depends on how you do it, if I would have vertically vented it out of my roof I could have bought (b-vent) from home depot, or Lowe’s, but since I horizontally vented it required me to use category III vent pipe due to my local code requirements, and to buy category III pipe you need to have a gas license. I was really surprised by that. supply line was just standard 1” black iron pipe so there wasn’t any issue there, and there weren’t any issues in me running the pipe myself. I do believe some of the underground fittings and lines you can run into issues buying if you don’t have a license. Fortunately when I had my house and shop built I had them run the underground line and stub it out on both ends so I didn’t have to cross that bridge.

I had my builder run and stub out the underground run when my house and shop was being built so I don’t now the exact length, but I would say it’s about 20ft or less.

@@dudester3263 yeah that’s what I ended up doing haha. I tried to look online, but couldn’t find any info on that. Let me know how it works, my shop is about 1200 sqft and it heats it up pretty fast. I’m impressed with it so far. Will you be running yours on propane or natural gas?

does the thermostat take 5 wire? if so what did you do on the heater cause theres only 4 spots there

hey sorry I just now saw your comment. No the ecobee thermostat only needs 4 wires. Most importantly the common wire which provides the thermostat with constant 24v power.

thank you for getting back to me i did a little reasearch and pretty much came up with that . but just to get it up and working i tied the r wire and w wire together till i get some thermostat wire i plan to use momentum meri thermostat cause its a little cheaper

No problem you RU-vid’s comment notifications aren’t the best, really delayed, and sometimes I don’t even get notified at all. I did a bunch of research prior as well, and came across a forum and someone was talking about having to install an extra relay to make it work, but I haven’t had any issues at all. Yeah I would have went with something cheaper as well except all my WiFi controlled devices in my home are apple based where I can use the home kit to control them, so it makes it pretty handy.

someone on one of the forums said cause the heaters have the c wire it makes it so we dont have to supply the thermostat with 12volts. im very impressed with how quiet it is but is a bit of a fuel hog but then again im only like qaurter of the way insulated but its 11 degrees here today and it got it to 65 in about 2ish hours

@@devendewey5214 what size is yours? It’s been in the high 20’s where I’m at and my shop not heated usually stays around 48, but once I turn it on it will get up to 65 in about 30min. I’m curious to see how much it cost me to run.
