I emigrated to Sydney from England in 1970 at the age of nineteen. Very different then. On my first full day, my cousin's husband took me around parts of Sydney and as we walked back to our car around 11 o clock in the morning (not far from Circular Quay) a guy staggered out of a pub and vomited all over the footpath (sidewalk). Charming!

My wife and I have been to Sydney 3 times from Idaho, USA. We love Sydney. I first discovered Sydney in 1997 when I visited New Zealand for the second time and then went to Sydney to see an old running buddy. I used to run lots of races, including marathons. Doing that I made friends a long time ago with a few Kiwis. One of them moved to Sydney, where I visited him in 1997. I fell in love with Sydney. When I married my wife in 2000, we honeymooned in Moorea. We have been to Australia three times and both love it.

In my mind, Sydney is the best large city. It just has about everything. If you spend two weeks in Sydney and don't have a good time, then you must not know how to have fun. Go see Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, ride the ferries around the harbor, go see the Blue Mountains, see Taronga Zoo and also Feeatherdale Wildlife, ride the light rail all over the city (which is a beautiful city) and just hang out. I could spend a month there every year and never be bored.

As a Sydneysider is so fascinating to see you walking my streets. I wanted to jump in there and show you the best places to eat and where to get a drink; to tell you about the birds and tell you the way to pronounce Woolloomooloo and Kookaburra.

Australia is on the Southern Hemisphere, so seasons there are reversed. It can be Spring on the Northern Hemisphere, in Australia it is the beginning of Autumn/Fall. So if you are staying till mid-April, you will have amazing fall foliage in the mountains of Australia or New Zealand which can be amazing. Really nice to see you in Australia for the first time. I hope that you enjoy it in all the ways, seeing the most beautiful things in the country, with all differences from the other world. Have a nice time.

The birds are locally known as 'bin chickens' The Australian white ibis is actually one of three ibis species that are native, but their emergence as city slickers is a relatively recent phenomenon. It used to be rare to see them, but now they are everywhere

You can go to Bondi beach, Manly beach, Tauranga zoo and climb the harbor bridge. The Rocks ( just across on the other side of the harbor) has restaurants and shops selling Aboriginal art and craft . You can do the ferry ride to Manly beach and the zoo.

So finally, congratulations! Interesting though your first impressions. When I first went to Australia and arrived in Sydney I was disappointed because I was expecting something totally different having lived all my life in England and it reminded me of home, but it also has an American vibe too. Anyway for us Westeners it's like a copy of home!

Make sure to drink a Balter XPA, head to Darling Harbour and the Star Casino for evening fun. Get a ferry to Manly, walk round Bondi / Coogee. Glebe point park is nice. The coin museum is cool. There is so much to see and do - enjoy!
