My first landings on an Airbus A320

We did landing training on the D-ABNY (A320) in Rostock-Laage (ETNL/RLG), Germany. After 6 touch and goes we were released for the line flights. This base training is necessary after the typerating on the simulator. The traffic patterns where all flown by hand. No autopilot during training.
We had a great time on the aircraft. It was a lot of fun, flying that amazing plane in real for the first time!

Airbus A320 is FBW. There isn't much to do there to be honest. Once you set the attitude and the speed it pretty much does all the compensations by itself. :-)

Base training is always exciting, as I heard :) It's the first real aircraft after the sim, it is somewhat (or a lot) different than the sim, and there is always a chance for something not going as planned, such as rough landings. I heard it from a pilot who was participating in these on the jumpseat for safety reasons (just in case the captain becomes incapacitated).
@Doggepe
@Doggepe 2 года назад
I thought the 737 was very close to the sim, rough landings are felt for sure in the sim as well, but of course a difference when it's actually real life haha
@OmnipotentEnt
@OmnipotentEnt 2 года назад
@@Doggepe I think the psychological factor of "oh wow, I'm in control of the real thing now" comes into play too! As far as developing muscle and spatial memory of the cockpit, VR sims and level D are the way to go. Feels exactly the same as sitting in the real thing. Speaking from a 737 perspective as well :)
@rnzoli
@rnzoli 2 года назад
@@Doggepe maybe the 737 sim is better than the Airbus sim, or the different control method (sidestick vs. control column) plays a role, who knows :)

@HELERsx
@HELERsx Год назад
@@rougedog8111 I dont know to which pilot you were talking but thats just not true. Of course TO and Landing are dynamic situations but its not like driving a bus! You are always focused which is even more difficult when the AP does the job. You are always aware of your position and where to land in case of emergency or major system failures. This is the hard part. The fun begins with troubleshooting midair or in dynamic situations like TO and landing...In fact you cant just pull to the right and stop the bus to look whats the problem and every PAX is safe. You have to solve problems with your FO or FC while the plane shoots through the air with 800kph+.

Such a cool video! I have no intent to become a professional pilot but I did try out an A320 full motion sim and can recommend that to everyone who enjoys this stuff! And, funnily enough, compared to my landings on the PC, it was rather easy to control and land. The connection to the aircraft is much better. I can only imagine how much better the actual plane must feel, real dream come true for you!

The benefit on the real aircraft (or also in a full-motion sim) is, that you can feel the aircraft. When preparing for takeoff or landing, I always tighten the fasten seatbelts to get a good connection to aircraft’s motion. Feeling the aircraft is very important!

Love this video. Been trying to learn and perfect Landings on the Airbus on FSX, so watching you do Touch & Go's was really helpful. Was the Autothrust used after initial take-off or was it all 'manually' controlled? And was the Autopilot used at any stage or was it purely 'hand-flown'?
@TobiasLauner
@TobiasLauner 4 года назад
Hi Simon, the autothrust kicks in when setting TOGA at takeoff and was used until touchdown. The autopilot was not engaged the whole time. Manual thrust flying is a procedure I learned later on the line. Manual flying only was the goal of that training. Nowadays I fly Autopilot/Autothrust OFF on most landings.

I haven't watched a touch and go on an Airbus A320 before so it felt quite weird when y'all didnt slow down after touchdown 😂

It was really fun!!! Would love to do it again

Nice! But early flare makes rough touchdowns specially if it is a long flare the plane losses speed and comes to the wrong side of the drag curve and just losses all energy and drops!

absolutely correct 👍🏻

That’s what I always say, speed is needed to compensate for the weight and the induced drag resulted from increasing the angle of attack. Maintaining proper speed will be disturbed horizontally for a smooth touch down rather than vertically.
