My first lesson in hot air balloon - 15 feet off the ground in neighborhoods!

I have always wanted to fly a hot air balloon and finally decided to take a lesson. It was a lot more interesting and fun than anticipated!
The most surprising part of the flight was how close my instructor was willing to let us fly to the ground and in between trees, houses, and neighborhoods. How fun to be just a few feet above obstacles and often well below roof lines slowly drifting through people's back yards!
We took off from a small Sandy, Utah park with 13 other balloons during a small balloon festival and had a great 1:06 hour flight. The closest I had ever been to a hot air balloon before was miles away. I couldn't believe how maneuverable they are by using different altitudes and wind directions. We did two circles around a 5 miles course instead of just drifting down wind.
If you have never taken a hot air balloon flight, go find an instructor and take a lesson! It will be way better than just paying some commercial ride place to go way up and drift for 30 minutes and then land. Go fly one yourself and see what it really is like.

Great instructor. Amazing illustration of the control they have. You'd want to be very confident, experienced and skilled to fly so close to any neighborhood like that. Do that here in Perth (Western Australia), & you'd end up with the CAA, cops and local TV all over you.

I rode a balloon in Canada when I was 15 and I got to co pilot the balloon. The scenery was beautiful. We went kayaking, rode on a gondola and cable car, went mountain hiking, went cycling and went whale watching.

Hot air balloons are sub-zero cool, gotta love the look on your face just after lifting off.... Priceless! I used to make small 6ft tall envelops out of Japanese Tissue with a meth burner as a kid, flew them on still mornings / evenings on 100ft fishing line tethers or in the stairwell of the family home - burner replaced by a hair-dryer - when the wind was blowing, which it seems to do constantly in the UK.

Nice video Balloons are so cool last winter I saw one flying over roof tops and it was so big looking I followed it kept dipping down then going back up before I knew it several other cars started to follow with me watching it. The wind was stronger then in this video I guess they got blown into the area. The balloon company truck was following from the ground. I lost track had to break off needed to go home sure looked fun.

Looks like you had a great balloon ride with a great landing. My one and only ride in one ended on top of a 14 story building in downtown Albuquerque. Got becalmed and the sun shining on the side of the building created a thermal which held us in place. Landed just before we ran out of fuel. It was Sunday and the building was closed, took all day to get down and had to have a helicopter lift the balloon off. I never trusted anything that requires moving parts or an open flame to fly :-)

love your gliding videos. having said that, i'm surprised by this video. this seems more like a video of a cautionary tale of things not to do in a balloon. stuff like this is why these balloons keep killing people. and further, the distraction to the people driving, when a balloon comes skimming over the roads. i can't believe the FAA even allows that kind of ballooning over populated areas.
@tpelton
@tpelton 8 лет назад
i had to go look. this document www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/ac91-71.pdf seems to be suggesting that the operator should have been no less than 1000' AGL.

@mrepicchickenman
@mrepicchickenman 7 лет назад
Student hot air balloon pilot here, balloons aren't big killers (as soon as you are in the basket and off the ground, you statistically are safer than you ever will be on the ground). The 1000' AGL thing you are looking at must be night flying or pure misunderstanding. Your point of distraction to the people isn't balloons fault, its the person driving. I also do not understand what the point of "not believing the FAA even allows that kind of ballooning over populated areas." is. Hot air balloon pilots during training have to show their 'teacher' that they can fly at any form of height whether it be 15 feet (usually not a viable option as its common for powerlines to be that low but this setting is an exception) to 2,000 feet, at an even elevation. Given said that, it is rare you find a pilot who is willing to dip down into neighborhoods then go up to get above the treeline/houses. And after saying that, I know this pilot, and he is very good at what he does. He knew the winds weren't more than 1-3 mph and kept a reasonable margin for sudden shift in wind.
@tpelton
@tpelton 7 лет назад
you might want to consider who you are getting instruction from if you haven't covered these topics. it's common sense really. don't fly low over people and property so you don't have accidents that kill people. simple. rules and regs and sources provided. enjoy. www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/ac91-71.pdf 7. MINIMUM ALTITUDES. a. In accordance with 5 91.119, balloons must maintain a safe minimum altitude above the surface and safe minimum distances from obstacles. Section 91.119(b) requires that all aircraft, except when necessary for takeoff and landing, operate over congested areas of cities, towns, or settlements or over open air assemblies of persons at an altitude no lower than 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft. (See figure 9.) b. Section 91.119(c) requires that all aircraft, except when necessary for takeoff and landing, operate over other than congested areas at an altitude of 500 feet above the surface except over open water or sparsely populated areas. (See figure 10.)
@mrepicchickenman
@mrepicchickenman 7 лет назад
+Tony Pelton alright that is what I saw but I am going with the FAA has a different definition of congested than you. Quite a few balloon events go over cities (not very large ones like Seattle) but like Provo (this video), Boise, and Albuquerque.

I just subscribed and liked your video,Iam from ON Canada & WOW!!! ,it looks like that neighborhood is really friendly waving to other people!!! We have an actual accidental place where the Hotair balloon companies found a really perfect spot in behind a retirement home by a park and they keep on putting up a lot of hotair balloons mostly every summer except this year cause of Covid.2018 my family saw 5 or 6 hotair balloons take off behind the retirement building,it actually is 2 buildings down from my families house,we’ve actually talked to the people in the basket cause they were right beside the house but,the balloon was maybe 20,000 or 30,000 feet,we always take lots of photos!!!! , actually just a week and a half ago,we just saw our local radio station,their blue 96.7 chyme balloon go through fog and disappear,have never experienced that and them go above the clouds,I think if my math is correct,it was about 50,000 to 150,000 feet. My mom,my brother and I want to go in a hotair balloon sometime,Iam not afraid of saying this but,I am scared of really,really huge heights!!!! 😬😬😬🤣🤣🤣 ,just a question,sometime my family wants to travel to the states,can we hook up with you guys,if you guys are still having the balloon festival in 2021?!!!!! 😁😁😁

It bothers me how short the rim of the basket is. It came up to the neck of the little boy but only to the waist of the adults...the best I could see. I am uncomfortable in high "open spaces " - fear of falling. In airplanes I feel enclosed and safe and enjoy flying in commercial airplanes, small aircraft such as a Cessna 172, and even took my first glider flight recently and enjoyed that. In the glider, sitting on the nose of the plane, when we made a steep bank, it almost seemed as if I was just hanging in space because the view is unobstructed, it took my breath at first but I got used to it. But put me in an high open space and I feel uncomfortable - so I have a feeling I would not like being in a balloon with a basket rim that only came up to my waist.

Ballooning in a city is extremely rare in the US, and even rarer is flying with sky scrapers beside you. That video you are referencing is in Melbourne Australia, not the US. The US has the strictest hot air balloon laws, where this video takes place.

+William Fitzpatrick, the only company I know of that ever manufactured lay down tanks was Aerostar. but they pulled out of the hot air balloon industry after the market crash in 2007. they now do weapons and weather balloon research for the military. there are still a few out there but most systems only have one laydown and one vertical tank. not sure how much the lay downs hold, but I don't think any normal system for fun flight carries 60 gallons, 50 at the most, but usually 40.

I am glad you had a good first flight, It's too late now, being as how this was 5 years ago....but it would be a good idea to engage with an instructor who keeps a better handle on the FAR's. Federal Aviation Regulations state that all aircraft except helicopters maintain 500' elevation above man made objects....and 1000' over congested areas except when landing or taking off. A recording like this is evidence for suspension or revocation.

Come on, In our country, the home owners would have attacked the balloon from their roofs, with stones, sticks, spitting, and the occasional AK-47s.... :) Plus 500 calls to the national aviation authority, police, local mayor, the left wing party, the right with party, and the head of the state as well. I just couldn't believe my eyes this can be done in the USA, and live to tell about it ! :)
