Cool shots and nice video Jamie! That first little weevil is a Jumping Weevil (Orchestes pilosus to be exact), those are always cool to see! The iridescent moths are Green Longhorn Moths (Adela reaumurella).

Great video, here in the Netherlands spring started a little sooner luckily! One question tho, do you have a reason why you shoot singe shots at F7.1? I tend to go to F11 for single shots

It's so good to see you again. I have a question: When stacking, do you adjust the number of frames according to the size of the object? How do you calculate this?
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
I set it to 999 frames, click the shutter to start the bracket and then click it again to stop the bracket when I've got enough frames. I have a video about my camera settings which covers this. Hope this helped

Great shots Jamie. You seem to be more on top of species names, common names are good for me, than other macro channels. It is not just about the photography but having an interest in the wee guys. Tiger beetles will be out soon. Great subjects if you can find them in your area. Also the parasitic Ruby tailed wasps. They are the rasiest to find on bare earth or scrapes where the host bees are nesting. Just one question what is your go too focus step? I know it is distance from subject dependant. With my 300mm plus 1.4 teleconverter I can go as big 5 and get good results. But with the 90mm and 1.4 extender I am at 1 or 2.
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
Thanks! I've never seen a tiger beetle but I have seen a couple ruby tailed wasps which I unfortunately couldn't get a good shot of. I use a focus differential of 2. I used to use 1 but I have found that 2 works perfectly fine for my setup
@youphototube
@youphototube 2 месяца назад
I only use a focus step of 1 when I have the 90 mm at 2x with the 1.4 Teleconverter. Not out on the field, and stacks tend to be 300+. My best shots of tiger beetles and Ruby tailed wasps are with the 300mm and 1.4 TC. I have the function switch on the lens set to focus bracket. There is a reserve close by that scrapes the land, so there are bare earth tracks, which are good for mining bees and tiger beetles, etc. I am going to see if I can get some shots with the 90mm this year. Perhaps try googling reserves near you that have land scrapes for mining bees, etc. Opens up a whole new dimention. I have shots of bee wolves and weevle bees caring for their hosts in flight to stack up their burrows. Enjoy it is a great time of year.

Can you please mention your flash power
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
It doesn't save to my images metadata so I leave it out. But I typically use 1/32 the most and go higher or lower depending on the scene

hi jamie would the d5300 be suitable with the 105 micro lens and flash and cover..as im not sure the camera or flash is quicker enough to capturing a stack of images like you do thankyou
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
I think your camera can shoot 5fps, which is great. The camera body and lens is good for macro. Just make sure to get a flash that can keep up with taking multiple shots if you aim to shoot stacks. A flash with a lithium ion battery should be good
@ScamsandShams
@ScamsandShams 2 месяца назад
@@JamieSpensley thankyou Even if you have to refocus each frame As the d5300 doesn't have a inbuilt focus staking or shift focus 🤔

I noticed that when you are taking your stack of images the flash does not always seem to fire, and sometimes I hear maybe ten or so non flash clicks. How does this affect your stack.
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
My flash fires all shots. It's the frame rate of my video camera not matching the speed of the flash, making it look as if the flash didn't fire
@AkaiMiso
@AkaiMiso 2 месяца назад
I notice quite a bit of variation in shutter speed in your shots. Do you set it based on your subjects?
@JamieSpensley
@JamieSpensley 2 месяца назад
If I am getting a single shot, I will use any shutter speed up to my flash sync speed which is 1/250. And if I am using bracketing mode to get stacked images, I am limited to a sync speed of 1/50 shutter. If something is moving around a lot, I'll typically use a higher shutter speed and go for a single shot
