Your stacks look really sharp. You must be standing really really still and have no wind haha. What stacking software are you using ? With Helicon I find that I get a little bit of « persistance » from some images which I guess are because of much slightly too much movement. Always great content anyway, keep this up 👌🏻
Hi Jamie, thanks for the great content. I have a few questions! Does the V860 flash power equate directly to the V350? For example does 1/16 on the V860 come out the same as on the V350? I ask cos I'm using the V350 and struggling for light sometimes on the 60mm at 1:1 ISO 200 f7 where you seem to have plenty here. Does the V860 ever drop frames at 1/16th and above like the V350? How does the sharpness of the 90mm compare to the 60mm? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
Great video as always Jamie. I use the OM1 and Zuiko 90mm lens. I fi d it really difficult to rest the lens on my hand and hold a plant or piece of grass etc. Do you gind it easier doing this with the 60mm ?
Just recently found your channel and have been enjoying, and learning from videos. I currently shoot macro using the Lumix G9 with the Oly 60mm macro lens and a Godox V350o flash. I'm thinking of picking up a used EM-1 mk2 or mk3 for the bracketing with flash capability that the G9 does not have. Since you were using the OM1 in this video, did you notice if it had any additional macro features/capabilities that the EM-1 mk2 does not?
I haven't deep dived into the om1 mk2 features properly. But the main advantage is you can use 1/100 shutter with bracketing whereas my em1 mk2 is 1/50 shutter. It is nice but don't think it's worth the extra thousand. I would get a used em1 mk2 like I did. You can get one for about £450 in the UK with MPB
POV worked very well - thanks. I just purchased the OM-1 Mark II and the 90mm macro, along with the Godox V350O. After laboring with a Canon R5 full frame and heavy Laowa 90mm, it’s much lighter. I’m struggling with in-camera stacking, and might just go with bracketing and Zerene Stacker. What increment do you use in your stacks? With a motorized rail, I can select the increment as accurately as a micron, but with the OM-1, I don’t know what a proper value might be. Is it relative to your magnification and simply trial and error? Thanks.
An easy way to differentiate Cinnabar Moths from Burnets is that Cinnabars have long red stripes that go down the length of the wing. Burnets just have spots. Lovely shots. Keep up the good work.
apparently quote bbc website... "They are created by a rare genetic mutation, but usually do not survive long as predators easily spot them While some experts say people have a 1% chance of seeing them in their lifetime, recent warm weather may mean more survive for longer"
Question, if I may... I shoot macro with a Canon R10, Tamron 90mm macro lens, Godox v350c flash with an AK diffuser. Shooting manual flash at 1/4 power, the flash doesn't keep up even at the standard continuous servo. Think that's around 3fps. Lowering the flash output to 1/8 and below helps, obviously but I tend to get underexposed shots. Is there a way to get more light out of the flash using the flash zoom or using the flap thing on top of the flash? Any help would be appreciated!
I'd suggest using an ISO of 200, aperture of f/5.6 to f/8 and shutter speed of 1/50 to 1/200. You should be able to lower your flash power with those settings. And have your zoom on the flash to the smallest number which should be like 18mm of something
@@JamieSpensley Cheers mate. I do tend to shoot at ISO 200 and f/9 so I'll try maybe f/7.1 and I'll drop my shutter speed to 1/160s to see if that helps. And I'll set the zoom to the minimum settings. Fingers crossed, this will help, thanks again.
Sony is leading the af game. Olympus can't t focus to save their life so they came up with this feature focus bracketing hoping that somehow what you want will be eventually in focus rofl
Thanks for contributing to the macro community. Sharing your info helps both new and experienced macro shooters. I’m aging and I find my macro kit too heavy and slow to respond. Not that money is no object, but my current situation allows me to get a fairly expensive kit that would allow one-handed operation. Is your current kit your recommendation, or would you modify that a bit with a more generous budget? Thx.
I've never seen much point in setting the aspect ratio in camera. As you say, for RAW it doesn't make any difference to the recorded image, anyway. I've never tried with JPEG, so I'm not sure if the aspect ratio is 'hard-baked' into the file, but if that is the case, I would see that as a pretty good reason to avoid it altogether. All you're doing is using less of the sensor and you run the slight risk of losing something off the edge of frame that in hindsight you might have wanted to include. The only possible advantage I can see, is if you're required to use a specific aspect ratio - say for a competition or specific use case. Then defining the aspect ratio in-camera would, indeed, help with composition. I'd hazard a guess though, that most of us adjust the crop on a significant percentage of our shots in post; apart from a certain American RU-vidr who, for some daft reason, insists that you shouldn't ever crop in post. Mind you, not much of what he says actually stands up to closer examination 🙄🤔😁
@Jamie. I've only just come across your channel, sir, and was so impressed with what you accomplished in this video that I've subscribed to your channel and requested that I be notified of each video upload that you make. (I wish I'd had the equipment, knowledge and skills that you have some 40+ years ago. 😉)
I'm a bit confused - I've a new Canon R10, and supposedly when it is in Auto Focus, I can access in-camera bracketing and stacking. However, folks on a Canon forum say that I wouldn't be able to use flash with it. Would you clarify that, please? Great videos, that's why I've subbed!
As far as I know, Canon has focus bracketing but it does not sync with the flash unfortunately. You will either have to get shots without flash or if you want to use flash, use the techniques I showed in this video to manually bracket your shots
Hi, Jamie Using in-camera focus bracketing and stacking, with flash, should I be using electronic or mechanical shutter? How does the flash keep up with the incremental bracketing shots?
Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge Jamie. I don't know if you have been taught your photography at College/Uni or whatever, but I am sure most of your Macro knowledge is self taught. It is extremely giving and kind of you to share with your followers. Please keep it coming! Warm feelings & regards to you.
Thanks for your review. Have you carried on using this lens? It looks like a bargain, but does it still have a place in your gear? I have a Canon DSLR (T7i) and a Canon mirrorless (R8), but it sounds like I would only be able to use this with the R8. (Maybe I should look at EF mount x2 macro lenses instead as I have the EF-RF mount adaptor). It's going to be a long time before an affordable third party x2 macro lens with auto focus comes to the RF mount, as Canon has only just recently opened up the RF mount to third party manufacturers, and only Sigma and Tamron so far.
The dragonfly you found was a Red-veined Dropwing (Trithemis arteriosa) the red winged darter is very similar, albeit with a bit less red venation in the wings and less black in the abdomen. A lot of darters or dropwings hunt from a favourite perch, so your tactic of approaching the perch slowly and waiting is one of the best ways of getting pictures of them during Sunlight hours. The other method is the same as youve used for damselflies, and thats just getting there super early in the morning before they become active.
It depends on the flash and what type of shots you are going for. Me personally, I like to get high image focus stacks as quick as possible. I use 1/32 on the flash most of the time because I can get a fast recycle time at that power
Very nice shots. Out of interest what do you do with your photos? Do you put them up on stock photography sites? Maybe make some income for them? If you do, a video on your experience of this would be interesting
Great photos as usual. I’m struggling with missed flashes on my Godox 350o, could it be my speed set too high? I think it’s about 180. Any suggestions?
I try to keep to 1/32 flash power to avoid missed flashes. Anything higher than that such as 1/16 or 1/8 usually gets a few missed flashes. But if you want to shoot at those powers, you can change the charge time in bracketing settings or shoot at a lower fps to avoid missed flashes
This is fantastic. I already stack, however i forgot about overlaying PMAX and DMAP to get the cleaner parts of the image. Thanks and good luck with your macro adventures.
