What is Cobweb Castle and the Spider Keep?
Cobweb Castle LLC was formed in 2020 by Elliott Stanton as he was wrapping up a career in the military. The company launched the patent pending Spider Keep as a wooden habitat designed for the Southern House Spider or Kukulcania hibernalis. These are harmless spiders which proliferate in the Southern states. Elliott had been working over a decade on a design that would allow the unique behavior of Southern House Spider to be observed in a controlled environment. The Spider Keep has been featured on channels such as Clint's Reptiles and The Tarantula Collective. Currently, Elliott continues to grow Cobweb Castle through building the RU-vid Channel and updating the wooden habitats to a new plastic design.

I'm really curious to see if you're able to successfully keep those in some way. I used to keep honey bees but due to my life situation I really don't have the time. Because of that I've been branching out into arthropod pets that don't take as much effort/time, like tarantulas and such. I'm having a hard time imagining how one would keep/interact with paper wasps.

Be sure to subscribe. I will share just how I am going to keep them. I modified one of my Spider Habitats and decided to give it a go. I’ve always been interested in bees and wasps. I’m not an expert so will be looking to learn along the way. Any advice or skills, please pass them along. I think this will be really cool and fun. Main goal is DON’T GET STUNG😉

@@CobwebCastle I know from experience that paper wasps have a hard time stinging through beekeeping gloves. I doubt you will, but if you ever find a reason to handle the wasps directly it might be useful to have a pair. If you ever get any be sure and pick up the goat skin beekeeping gloves. The fabric ones don't offer much protection, I've been stung through them, and the cowhide are nice and tough but they're not very flexible. Goat skin is the perfect middle ground.

She’s been really gentle so far. I’m not sure I’m Brave enough to hold with my hand. I’ve been stung many times growing up. I use my trusty sandwich bag if I need to move her.

@@CobwebCastle In my experience red paper wasps are not very aggressive when they just have one wasp on the nest. When there's just one I can get close enough to flip her off the nest with my bare hands before I destroy it. But as the population grows there's this expanding defensive perimeter. The more wasps they have the sooner they flare their wings when you're walking up to them. And then they start to do other defensive behavior like flying off the nest at the threat to scare it away. I'm really curious to see what's going to happen when you have one in a container like that. Maybe seeing you all the time will change their behavior? I know that even if there are a dozen or more wasps on the nest if you move a stick extremely slowly towards them they don't respond as if it's a threat at all. It's a great way to knock down large nests that are in dangerous areas without using pesticides (but unless your stick is very long you usually have to run afterwards!) Without the nest the wasps usually leave after a couple days. The larvae make great feeders for tarantula slings by the way.

Great info! I’m interested to see how this works out too. I don’t like getting stung. Thanks so much for your input!
