The thing I find so interesting about any Super 8 footage in a modern setting is that it immediately takes it to a different time. I think often we envision our modern world/cities as slick and very "high-definition" (this makes no sense), but when it's shot on Super 8 it takes that conception away, and the shots in Times Square could be from anytime in the 20th century. Neat video

I literally had the exact same thought... We look at jerky, silent, black and white film and immediately think of the early 20th century, we see Super 8 and think of the '60s or 70s, or video camcorder footage and remember the '80s and '90s. For all intents and purposes, anything shot on an HD or 4K smartphone today looks as vivid, sharp and bright as the real world. They don't impart "character" on the image like analogue formats did. I wonder how that will affect people's perception of the past in a century's time? Will the 2020s feel more recent or perhaps more tangible to people in the 2120s, than the 1920s do to us?

I’ve had some pretty unsuccessful super 8 experiences so far, always really wanted to try it... about 15 years ago I found some sealed rolls of Kodachrome in the basement, expired in the 70’s. I took them to Walmart who amazingly still processed super 8 film at the time but what I got back was essentially blank leader. I don’t know if they actually processed it as Kodachrome or if they thought it was E6 and that ruined it. I still have one more of those 70’s rolls I shot in 2005 but now that Kodachrome is donezo, it’d have to be processed as black and white. Fast forward 5 years, late 2010 I still really wanted to try this so I bought 2 fresh new rolls of Ektachrome and immediately put them in my freezer. Spoiler alert: they’re still in my freezer. I shot one at the time and never managed to get it developed, just too expensive, but I shot around town a bit. The other box is still sealed. I’m sure it’s still good as it’s been cold stored for 10 years but at this point I’m not sure I wanna take my chances. I do have to wonder how well the film I actually shot held onto a latent image for 10 years. Also that roll kodachrome from the 70’s I shot in 2005, I don’t know if there’s any hope of it still having an image I literally shot while I was still in middle school but if anyone wants to experiment with home-dev in a bucket using b&w chemicals, they can have it.

Love Noah and love super 8. I've been trying to wind down on shooting super 8 because of how much it was costing me, but I love to see other people get into it and the things they capture. Really like how well the 50D was able to capture those neon lights at night. Whenever I know that I'll be shooting at night, I usually load my camera with 500T, so it's helping to see how versatile 50D is

I was shooting on Vision 50D, which is Daylight film. The prices slightly vary based on the 'flavors' - though Ektachrome is wayyyy more expensive than Vision

Great to see you also trying out Super 8. I also got into Super 8 lately and did two short clips so far. A lot of fun but really costly over here in Europe. Love your Super 8 clip. Give the tungsten balanced films a shot. I only tried 200T and 500D so far. They are amazing.

Really love it! I was wondering, did you switch the button on the camera to tungsten when you were shooting at night? I’m new to this, just bought my first super8 :)

I only switched based on what film was in there-- so I set Daylight film (in my case Vision 50D) to the daylight setting, and in my recent Super 8 when I was switching back and forth, I used Tungsten for the Vision 200T film. I made a bts vid about that process on this channel, and the short film is over on my other if you're interested in the camera itself and what it can do :)

Hi, I like the 8/16/33 mm look. But is there cheap alternative? Getting the footage developed and digitized is hardly affordable if you want to shoot a full length analog film (and dont want to use pseudo-analog digital filter.)

@@yomansup so it all depends on what you're working with-- roughly speaking here, standard color negative super 8 film is about $30 (ish) per cartridge. Then developing ranges depending on the resolution you want. For 4k overscans, it's between $75-100 per cartridge in my research.

Hey there- thanks, glad you dig it. A 50 ft cartridge at 18fps should give you like 3.5 minutes. Your camera should have a meter on it somewhere saying how many feet you've used. But mine doesn't offer any resistance once you've finished the cartridge. On my second film, I actually missed a shot or two because I kept recording after I hit the end of the cartridge. So after that I was pretty careful to monitor how many feet I've used, and tried to keep a rough timer in my brain. Best of luck with it!! Super 8 is a blast

I found mine on ebay, rolled the dice. It's a beater, the power zoom doesn't work at all. And if you watch my newer vids, I explain the piece that controls the zoom broke off too. But it was cheap, and ancient. And not in great shape, so I'm not shocked lol.

Thank you for making this video!! NYC + super 8 film = a fuckin mood. In the video you mention not using the right film for the dim light shot at brunch (i think?). I want to buy a super 8 (310 or 514 I'm not sure yet) but I don't quite know where to start. How did you find out what specific film to use for specific light-scenarios? I'm currently researching on my own, but I'm overwhelmed by the wealth of information-- is there any help you can give or information you can direct me to? I'm an amateur but I'm willing to learn! 😅

Thanks for stopping by-- things I learned shooting super 8 over the last two years-- is actually a vid I want to make (prob by the end of the summer)But the short version regarding film is by looking into what film you're buying. For example, Kodak Vision3 50D. The 50D tells you the ISO (which is 50, so it's low speed which is not as ideal for indoors/darker environments) and the balance (D = Daylight so it's meant to be used outdoors, and you'll get sort of weird colors indoors, like you can see in the brunch thing in mine) Hope that helps!!

Hi men I have a question. I own a Canon Auto Zoom 518 (8mm). And I used it once, i used a 50D Vision but I have an issue. After recieving my digital footage I found out that like 2/3 of my footage is overexposed. 1/3 of the usable footage looks pretty good but the other 2/3 is just white (I was recording on a very sunny day). Does this mean that 50D is not good enough for these heavy sunny days or do you think it has to do something with my super 8 camera? I need your help. Thanks.

I used pro8mm (not in any way affiliated with them, I just think they do good work) I had them develop and scan all the super 8 I've filmed. I would do some homework though, as there are other options out there. I know there are few places in Cali and NYC that still process super 8. Hope that helps

Is it a 4:3 aspect. Also how much does a roll of film cost and to get it processed?

it would be 4:3 if you crop the sprocket holes, I didn't so it appears slightly more 16:9ish here. I got it processed via pro8mm (not spons) you can check their prices on the website, they vary depending on your needs (resolution, color correction, etc)

Question, so how do you get the footage out and on to your phone or how do you get it off the camera period and edit it ??? Can someone tag me and let me know

I sent my film out to a processing lab, they returned the digital files to me on a flash drive. I went through pro8mm, there are other services out there but I really like the work they do. They did a fantastic job with a quick turnaround and tons of customization options (like the overscan, which gives the sprocket hole on the side you see in this video) hope that helps

analog video has tracking issues, too much noise on the bottom and it affects color noise(amplifies it). get that fixed in nearby electronics repair shop heh...
