Every reaction video you make with Deafheaven's albums blow me away as you really nail it with your thoughts what you're supposed to feel listening to them. I wish there were more people in the world like you but hey, can't complain: at least we have YOU!
I started out with Sunbather, like pretty much everyone, but this one is my favorite of theirs. It has all of the depth of their most melodic work with the deepest full dives into a more traditional metal/ rock sound. I really find it phenomenal beyond words. The band put out a single in 2019 not associated with an album release which you should definitely hear. It's called "black brick" and it's arguably their most brutal song which I guess is kinda odd to not tie into an album. Anyway, good reaction!
Agreed, probably tied with Sunbather for my favorite album so far. I love how they fuse metal/blackgaze, rock and melodic moments on New Bermuda. It works so well. Thanks for recommending Black brick, I just listened to it and love the heavy, more aggressive tones of it, the growly vocals are great too!
"Come Back" is my favorite song from this album :) .. i love that outro jam session the last 2-3 minutes of the song .. beautiful .. it is hard to pick a favorite Deafheaven Album .. they're all soo perfectly written .. you're in for a treat reviewing Ordinary Corrupt Human Love .. i love the cover art for that album .. and I LOVE your Music Theory how all Deafheaven Albums represent Elements of Life ; Sunbather = Fire , Infinite Granite = Water , New Bermuda = Wind/Air .. i never thought about it that way before and you gave me new insight when listening to their music :)
Love your Deftones, Tool, and Deafheaven reactions, editing is great and the commentary hits on a lot of great points for a first listen. I'd highly recommend checking out Alcest, they pioneered the post-black metal/shoegaze hybrid that would go on to inspire Deafheaven, best place to start is Écailles de Lune but their recent output is also excellent.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! Alcest has definitely been recommended by several others as well, I will absolutely have to check their stuff out.
God this is such a good album. Glad you enjoyed it. I really loved the style of music that Deafheaven was making when I first heard Sunbather but this album was when I really took notice at how good of musicians they are. It's really hard to pick between this ablum, Sunbather, or Ordinary Corrupt Human Love as my favorite album because they all sound quintessentially Deafheaven but different at the same time. On a side note, if you want more music that focuses on the black metal side of Deafheaven's sound I would suggest Austrian post-black metal band Harakiri for the Sky. The albums Maere and Arson are what I would suggest to start with. If you want music more focused on the shoegaze side of Deafheaven's sound I would suggest fellow blackgaze band (and pioneers of the genre) Alcest from France. They are essentially a more melodic version of Deafheaven. Not that Deafheaven is winning any awards for understanding the vocals but Alcest do sing in a mixture of French and a blend of made up nonsense sounds and words that don't come from any language. My favorite albums of theirs are Écailles de Lune and Kodama.
I wish more people understood how brilliant this band is. Saw them at Furnace Fest a few weeks ago after years of wanting to catch them live and they DELIVERED. There's not one band on this earth that can do what they do.
Congratulations.. I like Deafhaven now. I hope your happy ;) I listened to Sunbather several years ago, but it did not grab me at the time. Over the past 5 years, I started gravitating more towards that melodic, atmospheric black metal sound. So, TY for the reintroduction. Also, maybe in your own time, check out White Ward - False light, Sylvaine - Nova and Fluisteraars - Bloem.
@@mollyesanborn yeah, I love that it's darker than Sunbather but I love the intensity on the heavier tracks and also how they switch to lighter arrangements.
New Bermuda has some of my favourite lyrics by this band. Despite Dream House's ending being their absolute best (you're probably familiar with that part by now, everyone quotes it: "I'm dying/Is it blissful?/It's like a dream/I want to dream..."), the mid section of Come Back is beautiful ("We, audience, who saved our roses...", etc.). Moreover, I feel like this album's lyrics are the easiest to understand. The lyrics on Baby Blue are perfect and it's very easy to pick them up, even for someone like me who isn't a native speaker... My favourite line from Baby Blue: "I begged not to carry the corpse, to not be a queer fish in unforgiving hands..." Damn, it's so powerful and emotional and poetic yet raw at the same time. I love this band.
Love the ‘90s quotes in this record. I saw them play Gifts for the Earth live and I sang Champagne Supernova under my breath during the middle section.
I just had this same experience with this band - never heard of them and somehow missed the whole black gaze thing as a hardcore kid. I saw them open for Coheed and Cambria on Pittsburgh and have been obsessed with everything they have done since ❤
Lovely reaction to the album. This is my favourite Deafheaven album. Luna is one of my favourite tracks as well. Looking forward to your reaction for the remaining two albums!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Luna is such a phenomenal track, and I am looking forward to hearing what they bring to their final two albums I haven't heard yet.
While I don’t think this is a bad album by any means, it’s the one I have revisited the least next to Roads to Judah. Gifts for the Earth is pretty much the only track I listen to still from it and for me personally it’s probably a top 5 deafheaven track. Glad you enjoyed it and great reaction as always. Hopefully we’ll see you do OCHL soon! One of my favorite albums of all time.
I keep rewatching that section at 6:17 you look so dreamy. Luna is my favourite Deafheaven song and I feel this so much. Love your channel! Hopefully you'll soon get the chance to check out Alcest! My pick would be the album "Kodama" !
Luna is such a beautiful track! Somehow so intense but so relaxing too. Deafheaven can somehow blend those two sounds seamlessly. And Alcest has been on my list for a while now, can't wait to hear their music!

“Shoegazey black metal.” Last year I learned the term, “Blackgaze,” and I definitely like it more than “Black Metal,” though when I describe them to people I usually stick with “Post-Metal.” The 2021 release, Infinite Granite, is a 180° from their typical songs, (something I’m sure you noticed by the end of all of these reviews/reactions. I dunno if it’s the kind of thing you’d dig but if y’all are into things like gear, Premier Guitar did a great Rig Rundown video w/ the Deafheaven guitarists, (Kerry McCoy & Shiv Mehra.) Frankly, my biggest complaint with Deafheaven has always been the vocals, because there is almost no dynamism in them. George Clarke’s vocals have more often than not felt like they just go on too long. Then they released Infinite Granite, and I’m like, “what happened to George?!” I loved the addition of Kerry’s vocals becoming more prominent than they had been in prior releases, but a more mixed blend would’ve been nice. Anyway, that’s my little rant about my nitpicked take.
@@mollyesanborn you totally should! they’re legends of the post rock genre which deafheaven clearly take a lot of influence from. i’d recommend lift your skinny fists or slow riot for starters (maybe a reaction vid 👀)
Molly, if you’re taking suggestions from usethen I recommend a band called Acid Bath, only released 2 albums in their short lifespan but they are really good
Enjoyable video and you’re right, there’s just something about Deafheaven’s music… No other band can scratch that itch like they do. Would like to see your reaction to hearing Ordinary Corrupt Human Love for the first time :)
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Personally I love Bermuda just as much as Sunbather if not a little more, it's close. The overwhelming dread and pit of despair is something that hits hard with this album for me.
Best tracks out of every Deafheaven record for me: Roads to Judah: Unrequited Sunbather: Dream House New Bermuda: Luna OCHL: Glint Infinite Granite: In Blur
There is also a song called From the Kettle On the Coil that is released before this album and it's in the same style. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love have a B-side song called "Black Brick" which is Deafheaven's heaviest song, it's straight black metal with thrash metal elements. Deafheaven also have Demo EP with 4 songs that is released before Road to Judah. And a 10th anniversary live album called 10 Years Gone
I've heard Black Brick, great track! I love how they really embrace their heavier side on it. I will have to check out the rest of their non-album stuff now!
Oh man I LOVE that album! I've heard it already earlier this year and actually did a review for it here on my channel. Wish I had filmed my reaction to it though because it really blew me away.
Glad you liked this one :) I may consider New Burmuda to be their weakest album, but it still absolutely slaps. I will definitely say though, the delicious irony that is the core of Deafheaven's sound and lyrics is probably the strongest part here. The melody of the classic pop song "kiss me" over the lyrics of "my world / closes / it's eyes to / sex and / laughter" during Brought to the Water is a standout moment. The last track too, Gifts of the Earth - the beautiful, slow, soaring crescendo of the end of the album over the lyrics "my / flesh / to / disintegrate / into consumption / for the earth" is beautiful, comforting, haunting and horrifying - the thought that even if you lead an utterly worthless and meaningless existence, you can still feed the worms at least. It's one hella dark yet melodic album. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love awaits...
Love how you love this badass album. That melodic soft section is POST-ROCK. Check a band called Explosions in the Sky. A lot of bands are inspired by them.
Sunbather 10/10 New Bermuda 9.5/10 OCHL 8.5/10 Roads to Judah 7/10 Infinite Granite 5/10 Music doesn't make me cry. And yet I cry everytime I hear Vertigo and The Pecan Tree.
I think you would enjoy Bosse-de-Nage. Deafheaven-ish on some points I would say. You could start with the Album III. Really beautiful, but everything they have put out is :3
I will get to a OCHL reaction, don't worry! Can't wait to hear it. I think I may have fallen asleep or something while Spotify was on shuffle because I haven't heard Crosses yet, I plan on it though! I will certainly do a reaction to that album :)
Glad you're enjoying the channel, and thanks for the feedback! I trim down the song clips to keep the videos a reasonable length and for copyright reasons.
@@mollyesanborn You’re awesome. Sorry, I had no idea because of copyrights. It takes me a few more seconds to dive into a song. Again I love your music taste.
Given that fact that you enjoyed Sunbather, Infinite Granite, and this one... I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed by OCHL. I'd also like to add a +1 to Envy and GY!BE that were recommended in the comments already.
I remember anticipating this... 2014/2015 was... I kinda stick with the trilogy. Black Brick and Into the Coil. maybe try again with the other two someday. Meh
I love this album to pieces. It's ALMOST as good as Sunbather. It definitely shows them in WAY more aggressive territory and I think its fascinating. Baby Blue is the only kinda weak point on the album and that's the only reason I don't think it's as great as Sunbather.
New Bermuda will be perfectly 10/10 sick better than Sunbather if they took decision to replace Gifts for the Earth with From the Kettle Onto the Coil (you better should check this one out, if you haven't heard that) which was released as a single one year before they released New Bermuda, that's more way better and compatible with the album, idk but i can say that Gifts for the Earth lack of something that's make it weakest off the album. Anyway, i strongly took Luna as their best and my 1st favorite deafheaven's song, those scream at the end of the song it's like a brick to the face, and somehow really therapeutic.
