I do not advocate of condone the use of illegal substances, this video is purely for educational purposes.
In this video I describe one aspect of an extremely transformative LSD experience that I underwent with Adam, of PsychedSubstance. I describe how using guided meditation throughout the experience resulted in extremely profound insights about the nature of my mind. I also discuss why using meditation may be the most powerful tool a psychonaut can have in their toolbelt.
Also investigated is whether a state of enlightenment is attainable, and how my experience during the trip has fundamentally shifted the way I perceive my own consciousness.
I'm home for the holidays, pardon video quality 🙂

It was so funny to me at the time because I was with a group of friends and started saying what you’re saying here trying to explain this feeling to them and as I was speaking I was noticing this disconnect from the voice coming out of my face. It felt like I was speaking in autopilot and I was observing the sentences form on their own and being released from my mouth.

This is exactly how i was thinking about the soul. I think soul is just pure conciousness, pure awearness, a pure observer. Body has ego, which is the mental part of the body. The purpose of ego is to control the body and help the body survive. In other words having a body makes you have thoughts. If you ask yourself: "what am I", you are thinking, and thinking is a bodily phenomenon, it's egoistic, which is why your answer will end up being ego based. But in reality, true you is pure consiousness. Body thinks, soul observes. You don't need psycedelics to realize this, because i haven't ever tried any psycedelics. I realized this while dreaming. But i'm keen on trying psycedelics one day.

Well said. I completely agree. I went into my first psychedelic trip hoping to connect with the universe, and I definitely did, but what I realized was that the state of being sober is no less beautiful. On my first acid trip comedown (after 400 microgams, pretty high dose for a first time) I realized that I am a complex enough organism that can feel scared when faced with the thought of the size of the universe. This made me realize that i am the eyes in which the universe sees itself; and I am, in a way, god and everything i experience when sober is just as blissful as when I'm on LSD, only I'm too used to being sober that it got boring. I do still believe that LSD allows me to see the universe in a more "raw" sense if that makes sense. Anyway, that's just my two cents. Stay humble my friend 🙏🏻

Great that you got out of your limited mindset, the logical, faulty, distorted, delusional ego. There is no need to "believe" even. Direct experience is the only way to know, to Be. And, You are the layer beyond, that you are speaking of. Go into non duality, not just intellectually, but truly experientially, and everything will start to make actual sense, from psychedelic trips, if one has come to face the ego death, and so on, and gotten the insights of it. It is way more profound than the mind can ever imagine.

I've got to say, your story of "the observer" hits close. I once got hooked on the idea that in order to be truly happy, you need not play an active part in life, more a passive part. To not act but to observe. To prop up others egos at the expense of my own. But what I found was that it made it more difficult to live in a world where the biggest ego wins, where the one who takes action prevails. By being the observer, you allow others to take advantage of your passive personality. I have since returned to a more egoic lifestyle, but I remember the lesson I learned of observing and try to use it sparingly, such as avoiding acting too quickly and praising where praise is due.

Definitely the best explanation I have ever heard on that subject! Took my first LSD 20 year ago. Opened my eyes but not to reality, it open my eyes only to the very fact that I am living my whole life in total blindness. Blindness even to who am I. Really, Who are you? You think you know but those are only images of how you believe others are seeing you as.... But who are we for real? It always comes back to this moment. Right now. Quentin is going to become an amazing spiritual teacher 🙏🙏♥️♥️

Ram Dass said he tried hundreds of times on LSD to bring samadhi back out of the trip but never could and that's essentially what motivated him to goto India on a spiritual journey. If you look at people like James Austin and Roland Griffiths about meditation and psychedelics, it seems clear that both break the default mode network. I guess the issue is how to reliably achieve a broken default mode network without psychedelics. Hundreds of hours of solitary meditation seems to be the standard approach, but it doesn't seem to work for everyone, and you get people with decades of meditation that still haven't reached it. Makes me think it might be better just to microdose.
@Milkshakman
@Milkshakman 4 года назад
Interesting subject. If you look at the brain mechanisms, the standard way of hundreds of hours of sustained focus is simply taking advantage of the anticorrelation between the DMN and certain task-related/attentional networks. You focus hard, activating the task-related networks, and the DMN eventually reduces in activity as a result. Do it long enough, and the relevant areas of the DMN turn off completely. Insights occur. But there are also some people who seem to be able to immediately sink into awareness. Western teachers like Sam Harris, Loch Kelly, Rupert Spira have all discussed this. There's neuroscientific evidence for the validity of this as well. This is the basis of traditions like Dzogchen or Advaita. So ultimately I think it's about identity. What do you understand your self to essentially be? If you know on a truly fundamental level that you aren't the ego, then you can return to your true nature any time. Some people have these awakening experiences, and then the mind comes back online and constructs a story about it, which they buy into (a duality is created). But in actuality, that chattering mind and its story are contained within the awareness that was recognized. Some people get this immediately (see: Ramana Maharshi's story), whereas some need some instruction or further cultivation. I think psychedelics & meditation can be complementary here, to different extents depending on the person.
@ethanh9725
@ethanh9725 4 года назад
I don’t think we’re supposed to be able to “reliably achieve a broken default mode network without psychedelics.” The ego is there for a reason to aid in survival... it’s what’s gotten us this far into beginning to discover our true nature. I think we’re just always trying to find and maintain a balance between ourselves and everything else... the ego helps us distinguish that line but in polarity we mustn’t let it consume us and deter us from seeing the bigger picture of how that isn’t really us since we are all connected and part of something so much bigger.

Hey Quentin, thanks for the video. There's a cool meditation technique that you can try. When you inhale, think "I am not the body" And when you exhale, "I am not even in the mind". If you do that for 7 minutes with 3 minutes silent stillness at the end every morning, your world starts to change towards what you have described.

Hey Quentin :) you might want to look into Mooji. The state you're describing is EXACTLY what he points to! His most known method to experiment and know that 'beingness' your describing is called 'the inquiry' , where bascially every layer of your normal indentity gets stripped away by answering questions and you realize that you're the formless point of awareness where everything (including your thoughts , form, attention etc. etc.) is only appearing. The more you look into it and confirm it experientially, the more obvious it gets. Love your videos btw, keep it up !!

I meditated on ~200+ugs of LSD once for at least 3hrs straight. I literally felt my body melting away, my ego dissipating, and became completely overwhelmed with "cosmic" auditory hallucinations and intense closed-eye visuals. My inner-monologue completely ceased. At a certain point, there was no "me" - the boundaries of my body and sense of self no longer existed; I just melted into the universe. It was fucking incredible. Later, I somehow wound up face down on my bed, literally held captive (i.e. immobile) by extremely intense visions depicting metaphysical reality. The nature of these visions are largely ineffable, but ancient Aztec-like symbolism was heavily prevalent. I must have tripped HARD for a good 9-10hrs, but I don't remember 80% of it. I do know the majority of the trip was spent in lotus position on my bedroom floor meditating and then face down on my bed for God knows how long. It's the first time I experienced "passing out" on LSD. Wanting to take 300ug next time, but only limit meditation to an hour at most. Also want to walk around outside in nature more.

hey brother I just recently found your page. In order to eliminate/ greatly reduce a "badtrip" the key is to sit down to meditate, meditate for 10mins, then dose and go straight back to meditation for the majority of the trip. These conscious entities literally want you to sit down and listen. When we think in their presence we cannot get the message. Its like talking or thinking while someone is talking to you, you dont hear them. The goal is to just sit down and let your brain download the information the medicine will do all the work you dont have to do anything but surrender! When we think or try to do something about the experience we are attempting to escape it. Much love my friend best of luck on your journey!

Having been where you've been, I'd propose that what you've called 'detachment' is really a state of 'non-attachment' (there is an important distinction) and what you're referring to as 'the observer' is actually the state of observation itself, which is aware of the observer and observed as one and the same. Terrific video..... keep up the great work.

I was on about 200-400 ug with shitty tolerance but it was amazing. I feel like I have unlocked a new form of consciousness. Both my intuition and critical thinking have increased greatly since then as per usual with LSD but I feel like I have been deprogrammed from soooo much harmful software that was downloaded onto my brain even more than usual. Dude, you tapped on something real here. It's no wonder why people say suffering often leads to enlightenment. When you're suffering intensely, your mind probably gets so overwhelmed that it kicks into this pure awareness state. Thanks for sharing this experience, as always

the realm of the subconscious is interesting. Its more than just making your heart beat, those are it's deepest functions, but IMO it's a lot more broad than we think. Love to see an in depth thought log of the consciousness!

I have had very, very similar thoughts re: observer and egoic. Ive always described it as being instinctual and something ive mainly noticed on mushrooms. Instinct kicks in and nothing matters. You can sit in the rain and feel the beauty of it all. You can listen to the bird and almost hear them talk. There is no where to be. Time isnt real. And all you can really do is observe and "be"

I can feel you are going to be VERY important in the paradigm shift that needs to occur in our society - keep it up. Also, you NEED to read "Food of the Gods" by Terrence McKenna; really groundbreaking stuff that brings it ALL together.

You should read "thinking fast and slow" its a great book about the conscious and the unconscious from a very scientific and phycological viewpoint. Really great for understanding these things.

“The mind sees all the changing phenomena of the world - movement and play of light and shadow, form and color, all the drama of life” - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Transcendental meditation my friend. It's important that you bring yourself to a state of awareness as to understand that you must habituate the retention of the observers perspective. It may or may not be possible to experience true uninterrupted observation throughout your daily life, as it would be too dismissive of the good held within your egoic life. But if the knowledge of the true self is dismissed as learned, then only in hindsight are you able to recognize that you've become consumed by your ego.

Quentin you truly are a guide my friend. This was a great video. I truly thought I lost my mind when in a thought loop on 11 grams of mushrooms. I recently started meditating but because of this video I am going to step it up as well as remembering to use mindfulness. You sound like you broke through to another level that the psychedelics help you achieve "when you are ready". Thank you Quentin

Quentin, I hear you and completely understand. Wishing for a larger conversation... question for you: have you ever researched out of body experiences? This is a natural state which anyone can do, but most don’t know how to access. Meditation is important to do so.. it’s all about working with how one thinks.

You described what true reality is, its a common concept in spirituality wich says that our waking state is actually a bigger sleeping state and we are just remote comsciousness being aware of itself

I watched Adams podcast what you two discussed is revolutionary and ultimate truth , especially Quentin I like how you stress of the observer .. seems like you have touched aspects of eastern tradition, the state of shiva or oneness. Thanks for the vid

I don comment but I loved this. When tripping on LSD I tried meditating and found that meditating in just boxers and sitting criss cross on a big pillow is amazing it was also taken to an even higher level when I took deep breaths with my back as straight as possible. Another thing that’s amazing is sitting in this position, putting on “Shpongle” and closing my eyes it’s like going to different ”realities/dimensions” and you choose which depending on the song.

I was meditating and humming on LSD for ages I was probably sat ther for an hour atleast, I felt my whole body vibrating and see myself as an instrument that was taking in energy and flowing it out and the lesson I took was too do it positively. Reality is what you make it. I am you, you are me everything is one and it’s all an experience
