my first time reading THRONE OF GLASS ⚔️ lots of spoilers

Your opinion on the whole Chaol situation is so different from anyone else's I've heard. For me, I loved Chaol when they got together and he was my choice with the whole love triangle thing, but after the Nehemiah thing I realised that actually they would never have worked because she could never have been with someone from Adarlan, especially not someone who is and has been complicit in all of the kings actions. Chaol had his own journey that he needed to go through and he was never the right one for her because he absolutely could not accept her, even Dorian told him that if you love someone you love them completely and you dont get to choose which parts to love. He couldn't accept that she was Fae and that she had magic. Even though I think he was generally a good person, he did share some of the same views as the king especially regarding magic. He was a coward, which is the total opposite to what I thought about him in the first book and a half, and I thought that was really clever that SJM showed that people can me complicated, that you can be a good loyal person but does your loyalty to a friend mean anything when it leads to you standing idly by while thousands are suffering? because that was Chaos excuse for doing his job and not going against the king, his excuse was that he was doing it because he was loyal to Dorian who would eventually become king and change things. But is that really good enough? No, because it's cowardly and shows that he didn't want to take any action at all he just wanted to wait for his friend to do all the hard work. Also, she could have never been with anyone so ignorant -- both Chaol and Dorian never really thought about or considered what people outside of Adarlan were going through, or what the king was doing, or about the slaves until it impacted them. They never considered the way the slaves were treated until they went to Endovier and saw it, they never considered any of it until they fell in love with Celaena who's entire life and every aspect of her existence has been ruined and dictated by Adarlan and the king over and over and over again. They just lived happily and ignorantly in their own little bubble until she came along, and even when they began to care about it all they still did nothing about it. Dorian tried, but Chaol didn't. How could she be with someone like Chaol when her family and people were slaughtered by soldiers like him? and he still took pride in his work, even after knowing what his uniform represented and who and what he was working for. There were just so many layers and aspects to it that for me meant I understood why they could never work out. They had their moment, and it was lovely and simple, but that's all it was. A little bubble in time were they both got to be young and naive and simply be in love with out all the wider complications and responsibilities and politics getting in the way. It was a young love. But that bubble popped and the time passed when the real world came into it. I never hated Chaol, but I understand why some people do. For me, one of the things I like about SJM's writing and her characters is that nothing is simply black and white. Her characters are complicated and make a mixture of good and bad choices. So I rarely hate her characters (unless we are supposed to) because it's more complicated than that. I think overall, Chaol was a good person. But I also think he was a simple man who wanted a simple life, and he stumbled into something far bigger and he was terrified. I think he made a lot of excuses and had a lot of bigoted opinions and views. I think he was a coward that thought he was a lion until he was eventually called to action and realised he was a coward after all. I liked his character arc and development over the course of the rest of the series and I think he eventually became a better person, but he was never a bad guy or a villain. But he also wasn't right for Celaena in the long wrong, and she wasn't right for him either. They were doomed from the start, but I like that we dont see that until their relationship ends because we are just as caught up in the relationship and the romance as they are which is clever.
