@houdin654jeff
@houdin654jeff 2 года назад
@@valandhol9four680 I think filming that fight would have been near impossible with horses because of where they filmed it, on a literal firing range used by the New Zealand army. The ground was uneven, crater pocked, and littered with shrapnel and bomb casings. At the same time, it makes sense that, if you’re fighting what is essentially a suicidal diversion, you would spare the horses as they didn’t sign up for this. I never thought about that though. Maybe Shadowfax leads them away or something.

This scene has so much weight when you consider how much World War One influenced Tolkien. Being a Soldier and going off to fight in a literal hellscape, coming home to be praised as a hero when you really don't feel like one. To you, it was long gauntlet of survival and trauma, and the only thing that was important to you at the time were your friends and comrades. You can see it on Sam and Frodo's face, which, to me, shows that the actors really knew what this story was really about.

Best trilogy of movies ever made. This scene always has me in tears. So much heart and emotion in this scene. And Howard Shore really knows how to pull at those heartstrings with his score. I was fortunate enough to have gone to see the Howard Shore live tour with Fellowship of the Rings. So it was a live showing of the movie - but the music was removed from the movie - instead there was a live symphony orchestra and a huge choir that did the music live. Closest thing to a religious experience of meeting the gods that I have ever had. It was truly a magical experience. This was at a NBA stadium - there was about 4000 people in the audience. I'll never forget it.

One of my happiest memories will always be reading the entire Lord of the Rings to my daughter at bedtime. She was nine or ten. It took us six months to make that journey, and it gave her a lifelong passion for the work of Tolkien. Later, we wrote notes to each other in Tolkien's Tengwar elvish script. Fun fact: reading LOTR aloud was a singularly pleasant experience because it's written in such a way as to flow from the tongue like water. Try it some time, it's astonishing.
