If I caught that lady stealing I'd start by smashing some lights out of her car, then if she's not compliant, rude or entitled.... I dunno...maybe windows, etc., then I can let it go with a smile--were even now! (that said I like your more laid back approach better, just might not be my way :D ) Brick work looks excellent.

When I was little (9 years old) I had a tiny garden but everything always died except some onions and beans. The rest was eaten by the rats. But I had this huge mound of compost where I threw some worms in along with food scraps so I always had compost. My yard was so tiny so I couldn't plant any fruit trees and my neighbor had huge apple trees. One day I snuck into his yard and he caught me touching his apple trees and thought I was going to steal but I was just imagining that one day I will have a fruit tree. I explained and we compromised, he would give me free fruit if I gave him some of my compost. Now, 10 years later, I have a house with two apple trees, three pear trees, and a peach tree :)

That's one of the biggest dislikes I have for the older, suburban homes. They set the home back from the front property line and create a huge front yard. I'd much rather have a smaller front yard and a larger backyard. I spend way more time in my backyard than the front. Of course, I really rather have about ten acres in a rural setting to grow ALL the food i could ever eat. ;)

Had problems with this too, my neighbors stole my fruit, and me and my neighbors don't like each other. So i put a deadly skull sign with "Soil has been threaten with Roundup ( weed remover that can give you cancer..) For your own safety, don't steal and eat more unless you want to get seriously sick. Next day, he was at my door all scared about his health, told him that one time won't do harm, but don't ever do it again. I'm pretty evil, but it works really well. This is why in my country in Philippines we have walls 6ft high around our house and we lock our gates. Amerrican culture or western culture in general is really too reluctant. People keep stealing in the farm because the fence is not concrete and it's only made of metal screens people literally destroy it to trespass. I would love to put some signs like trespassers will be shot and literally shoot people if I can because I've lost so much from tools, nettings and even Galvanized roof being stolen. THat's how thieves are and they don't deserve any mercy. They even steal the eggs from my layer chickens. Now that m here abroad, I dont know what's happening maybe the chickens were also stolen. I do have a caretaker to watch over the place but he never do his job properly

One problem with giving people fruit when they ask is that the word "free" spread quick in town and then every one is at the door wanting to take a piece. Also what shocks me is when I tell people no, they just go and take it.

Quote: "... don't steal, just ask me and I would be more than willing to share..." YES, thank you!! my sentiments exactly! I have the same problem. I have 4 mango trees & the neighbors steal the mangoes all the time. I have shared mangoes with them on multiple occasions, and would do so any time.Just have the courtesy to ask when you want more if I'm not giving them fast enough to you. But don't go and steal all the mangoes off my trees without asking. Not to mention they leave a mess in my yard because they shake the tree and all the brush and leaves and limbs come down left in my yard for me to clean up. and it's not even just the kids, it's the parents, and even the grandparents, which really blows my mind! No etiquette or manners at all!

My neighbor used to have a beautiful front yard garden. Then people kept stealing her food! Sadly she gave up on it. I'm going to try to secretly plant some tomatoes for her this year :D. From my own experience. The best way to stop theives is to have clingy sounding fences and intimidating symbols that make you look like a dangerous wizard XD. People don't bother trying if too much noise is made. Animals don't want to be heard! It's a survival instinct!

I totally feel your pain. I had a similar experience in White Rock Canada. We brought a Fuyu persimmon tree and planted in our front yard. We waited patiently for it to settle and it finally produced fruits this year. We had only three fruits, but it’s perfect because we can have one for each family member. We check everyday for them to become ripen so we can pick. Then a lady came into our front yard one morning and pick them. She picked everything, even the one that is not ready. We saw her in our security camera footage. She walked into our front yard and started taking photos of our flower garden and then picked all three persimmons off our tree. I’m so sad. Completely heart broken. This was going to our first harvest. People tell me it’s not a big deal, just a few fruits, but I’m still furious. I know I can buy persimmon from store, and I don’t want people think I’m stingy or making a big deal of something very small. I’m so glad you understand that my anger is not unjustified.
@pamelawhitfield4881

Please don't use the word "stingy". No one would call you stingy if they took your car, flag, patio furniture (yes patio furniture was taken from someone's backyard in the middle of th night in our neighborhood). There is no shame. But you are not stingy to enjoy the fruits of your labor - no pun intended.
@coolmantoole

My tactic is that I preempt the theft attacks, but offering to give neighbors fruit when I get an over abundance which happens every year with something. Last year I had a bumper crop of plums. This year it's looking like I will get a bumper crop of muscadines. I have also purposely planted blueberries, figs, huckleberries and one of my pear trees right next to the road so that pedestrians walking buy can grab something without stepping on the property. Mind you I live in a small town in the deep South where everybody knows everybody, and the biggest fruit thieves around here are the squirrels anyway. God bless.
@pathfinder9774
@pathfinder9774 7 лет назад
Marcus Toole I feel the same way, but in my case with my mangoes, I have done exactly that and shared with the neighbors multiple times. I have even left bags of mangoes after I've seen them steal the mangoes off the tree just to see if it pricks a conscience. But no, two days later, they're back stealing mangoes off my trees again. My point is that it's just common courtesy and etiquette to ask. I don't withhold anything, but just ask me!

@coolmantoole
@coolmantoole 4 года назад
@@fs14genos61 the issue is that there is no realistic way to protect fruit in an urban garden without fencing, cameras and the like. Consequently one has to find ways to discourage people from steeling. Being generous with fruit does help in some cases. However, the only fruit that I have problems with people steeling are the plums. Putting up posted signs did help with that some but not 100%.

Back in the '90s, I was living in a small apartment and had a small 4x4' garden by the front steps where I was growing a couple cherry tomato plants. I started to notice every morning that 1 cherry tomato would be missing! I could only assume that someone walking to the bus was stealing a tomato hoping that I would not notice. Well, I did notice!. So I went to the pharmacy and bought a small bottle of Oil of Ipecac then smeared a little bit on each of the ripe tomatoes. I do not know what happened or where, but the thief stopped stealing my tomatoes. Terry Thomas Brookhaven Gardens Atlanta, Georgia USA

Reminds me of when I lived in S. Cali as a kid, and on the way home from school, there were trees loaded with pomegranates. They didn't harvest them regularly, and some were even regularly laying on the ground. It was so easy to reach the trees just standing on the sidewalk, we'd just take one each. Never stripped the tree by any means. But I was sure it was ok that we took the fruit, otherwise we would've been scared of stealing. There was also an old vacant lot, with a decaying house, that had a gigantic mulberry tree. We'd climb that tree and eat to our heart's content. No one ever came to tell us we shouldn't, and we never saw anyone harvest the fruit. So in that case, I'm sure it was fine too. But in your situation, with the fact you harvest the trees and your house is well-tended, I wouldn't have ever dared try to take some of that fruit. Amazing they felt that entitled! Some permaculturists I know purposely plant extra fruit trees and invite the neighborhood kids to harvest when they want. Some gardeners plant trees that no one recognizes the fruit, and that is also a good deterrent.
8 лет назад
I plant stuff people don't recognize immediately as food. I am on a zero lot in the suburbs of Memphis and I have a lot of edibles planted in front of my home. I have persimmon, pomegranate, pineapple guava, dwarf patio peach, flowering quince, maypop, goumi berry, elephant garlic, rosemary, sweet bay tree, fennel, strawberries, grapes, and rose of sharon growing in my front yard and way more in the back yard. Nobody ever recognizes or notices anything really except for maybe the strawberries or rosemary planted right by the door in the front yard. Kinda weird if you ask me since the grapes are running up my awning over my front door and grapes basically hang down.

Do you think the kids, from their perspective, "found" the oranges or "stole" the oranges? When I was a kid, my neighbors all up and down the street had fruit trees of various sorts. We always felt at liberty to pick and climb (i.e., the the neighborhood kids in the 'burbs). No one ever seemed to mind. I can see them getting angry however if we actually damaged the trees, which we never did. And we would only take one fruit, and eat it as we strolled along. So, we would never go to a tree with a bag and the intent of packing things away... Times have changed.

I guarantee you the little b***s will try ONCE ONLY to steal from my garden. The roses I grow for my hips and petals may also be appropriately well thorned varieties where necessary.

My pet hate, People taking anything from others gardens. We teach our kids that even taking a flower is stealing so we make them go knock on the door if they want it. And if they pick it before asking, we march them to the door anyway and make them tell the owner what they did and apologize. Also, I had a support worker that refused to ask a guy down the road from me, for some guavas and cuttings. I explained my beliefs, if you haven't asked it's stealing, but she did it anyways. I rang her boss and she got fired. I was so mad that she did that in my neighbourhood and after I told her no. Stealing is stealing. You want something, work for it.

Jake I think your front yard is lovely. I've had someone steal one of my lemons. I saw him take it as he walked by. I confronted him (he was a middle schooler) and explained that what he was doing was stealing. He really didn't think it was stealing. Of course he tried to argue with me and say it was an orange not a lemon, LOL (my lemons get big). I let him keep the fruit, but I hope that I taught him a lesson. I share with just about anyone that asks. I have a ton of fruit in my front yard.

Hi Vegan Athlete :) I'm really enjoying your enthusiasm and informative videos! Just thought I'd mention that I live in Eugene, Oregon where I was also informed by the city that a front yard fence could not exceed 42 inches. However, what no one informed me of was that this applies only to fences that one cannot see through. I desired a hog wire fence to protect my front yard food forest and garden from people and deer. After contacting a local fencing company to get a quote, they informed me that actually, I can build up to 6' as long as the entire fence is see through ie; hog wire, cattle wire, etc. I have no idea if such info is also true in your town, but it might be. Anyhoo, keep up the great work!

I learned the hard way too. Now I plant all of my fruit trees in the backyard. I still have a huge loquat tree in the front but nobody touches the fruit. I guess nobody knows what loquats are. I also have a small fig tree, but again, nobody bothers it. Ignorance is bliss, in this case. When I had peaches, they were always all gone and ripped off the tree before they could even ripen. I wish I could have set up live electric wires on those branches to teach those little bastards a lesson.

I will be researching Chinese date trees thanks to your other video. However, when it comes to walls and fences, ALWAYS go big. If 4' was max allowed, then you should have went 4' instead of 3'. It is just the way it needs to be done. It makes it that much harder for little thieves and people looking to make a quick get-away. But your perimeter looks good with defensive plants. Being in AZ and having the cactus is good too. Good choices.

That was a question for "Dear Abby" at the start of her career and she consulted a lawyer for guidance once: (1) Stealing is stealing, but if the neighbor's fruit falls in your yard (the windfall on your side of the property), you may use it; and (2) It's wrong to sell any of those products for financial gain. Today, I think the best way is to ask first, and give the owner some of the orange marmalade you made.

FYI: Biblical law says this: Lev.19, "And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. 10 And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God." The only thing is, those that gather it cannot bring a container to carry it away: Deut.23, "When thou comest into thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel. 25 When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn." Yes, it is stealing to take ALL the FRUIT off your orange tree. Today common courtesy begs for someone to ASK the owner, especially if they, like you, live not on a FIELD, but a small city-plot of land, where a front yard is easy-picking for anyone.

A lot of my Peruvian apple cactus fruit were stolen. The biggest fruit I've seen it have..like very large apples. I removed some the day before and the rest I wanted them to get bigger..break open naturally ..so they're sweeter.more juicy. I was looking at my sapote tree and cacti in the afternoon then I went inside my house. My grandma asked me 15 minutes later if I had removed the cacti apples. I told her no. Then I looked outside..they were mostly all gone. From ones ready..to ones reddish almost..to even purple ones. Just gone. I put big pots with cacti..aloe vera..crown of thorns..and there was also already planted aloe's next it covering..they actually jumped it and crushed succulents, trampled and broke aloes..knocked down pots....IDK who did it..but I think it had to be someone close by who is actually LOOKING to do it. It's coordinated . I'm thinking of adding a small barbed wire fence and barbed wire on the floor to deter. It's like I have to guard my fruit like Fort Knox now.

People are the worst. I totally feel your pain. I cried when a lady came into my front yard and pick all of our persimmon fruits from our tree. I waited so long for our tree to finally settle and produce fruits. I was expecting them since the first flowers show up on the tree. We check everyday waiting for them to become ripen so we can pick them. Then this lady just come in and picked everything. They are not ready and she took everything. She didn't even left one for us. Even the one that were slightly green. I really dislike people who does something like this.

Please ask the former owners if they suffered from citrus fruit thievery. Maybe that " Israeli" had a deal with the former owner. Maybe it was that family who formerly planted the tree and felt that with no one living there they felt entitled. I know someone who had an orange tree with delicious oranges but bought sunkist orange pastuerized juice because the family never thought of using the oranges from their tree. They saw them as decoration. They probably never met a farmer in their lives. When I walk down the street here in Israel there is not one private house without a citrus tree. Many times I've been tempted to take just one lemon but I didn't do it because it is stealing.

Thanks for sharing the video. Here's an idea you may consider. Share your love for fresh fruit and knowledge for growing it with the neighborhood kids. You were once a kid, you know how it can be to have an adventure (at someone else's expense). You can help to turn some of the neighboring kids/people into fellow gardeners by keeping cool, friendly and approachable by offering to show them how to grow oranges in their yard. Encourage them to live higher than stealing but to consider making their neighborhood enjoyable for everyone. Maybe you can buy them a fruit tree and help to nurture it. The experience of growing their own fruit may give them a sense of owners pride and responsibility. We all can make positive differences in children's lives that they will take with them for a lifetime. Sometimes we have to think outside the box to get/keep the peace. Each one teach one can equal less theft in your garden ;)

In my family, we were taught that it was normal to pick a few fruits off of someone else’s trees, particularly if they were like overflowing. We don’t really mind when people take some of our own loquats either. But I got caught by an angry neighbor for picking two lemons off of her tree today, and it was sooo embarrassing. Communicating and asking is the right thing to do. People just grow up differently!!!

Your family might have been OK with it, but we're the owners of the fruit trees OK with it as well? In my neighborhood growing up, we had several people, growing fruit trees, and we also had plum, cherry, and apple trees which we all agreed ahead of time that we were all happy to share. However, we had neighbors with children who were quite rude and would come and take fruit to waste by smashing and or throwing at each other. So, we thought it was best to just have everyone ask before just taking. Please do not take offense to this, but just taking without asking in any case is theft. Unless both parties are OK with it, no one should ever just walk up on someone else's property, and take their food without consent.

I have 2 Lemon trees out front, between my garage and the street. There is a 4 foot high hedge between the street and the trees. Lived here for 36 years, my neighbors know they are allowed to take a few. The last two years, someone has come during the night, goes through the hedge (brake some of the branches to get through) and take EVERYONE the lemons off the trees and even the ones on the ground. So, putting something in front of the trees, like your little wall, is not stopping whoever is doing this.
