I'm always looking for the best settings for the GH5. Over the last 12 months, I've been using these and I've really liked what I'm getting from the camera. Hope these help you if you're looking.
Picture Profile:

I missed this video as I didn't have the bell clicked. I've been using White in Revery's NAT settings which turns out to be exactly what you're using! I'm going to try and use your custom FN button layout and see if I can get used to it. As a garbage GH5 user, this stuff is always helpful. Awesome video and keep the GH5 content coming!

Super helpful video! I just purchased the Gh5 and am learning it so i plan to try out some of your settings! 😎 cheers! And Rad is a great 80s word! I should know I graduated H.S. 1982. Totally rad! Also i thought I'd mention that vloggers rely on autofocus alot. The AF default settings aren't good so with a bit of AF settings tweaking i found on youtube AF can be improved! 👍

Great video man!! Sometimes it loses sharpness when tele converter is on and i dont know why!! Not always.. and it struggles to auto focus.. but i use it all the time!!

Great input and effort there Scott... thanks for sharing the knowledge. and i want to ask you if you tried to use the monopod with gimbal and use it as a jib or crane, for overhead shots and higher panning shots. i think it looks cool for your work, u need to use the lock mode on the gimbal.

Yes, I’ve used a gimbal on a monopod I really like it. I don’t necessarily use as much for crane stuff as much as I use it for the fact that I can get gimbal shots and then suddenly stand still with it on a monopod. Super convenient.

I have found that certain lenses seem to look better with other profiles i use standard natural and cine D for the most part. I do wonder if the other profiles would be good as well. maybe ill experiment with them in different situations

I’m nicking the white balance idea 👍👍. But I’m sharing that u can set the menu dial to do ISO. So good, can bump the iOS with your thumb in an instant 😎

Thx for sharing. I love working with natural profile. I do wonder if you loose dynamic range compared to a log profile. Sometimes I shoot interviews with large windows letting in a lot of light so to keep that from over exposing I should stick to log right?

Hi Scott, Thanks for this video. My custom buttons are almost exactly the same as yours...just routed to different buttons. Quick question. What do you use to set white balance when you are shooting a wedding or vlogging? You record in so many different environments...Do you walk around with a grey card in your pocket all the time or is there a more convenient way? Thx in advance

I have found that when i use the AF- On the camera focusses correctly but whenever I pull back the clutch for accurate MF it immediately goes out of focus (possibly due to manual focus rings having focal distances) but if i don't pull the clutch I can focus from that point using fly by wire. Is it the same for you?

24 for 80% of the day. 60fps for about 20 (dancing, portrait stuff with couple, establishers)

Hi, I'm about to go on a trip, and I don't feel like bringing my laptop, Under the REC FORMAT, there is AVCHD, and it is only 24Mbps, where as MP4(LPCM) is 100Mbps, if I need to save space for my SD card, can I shoot on AVCHD? how much quality am I really loosing with this option? thanks!

I would go -5 sharpness personally not a fan of how sharp the GH5 is in 4K with it all the way up.

Hi - thanks Scott that's very useful - at the beginning you mentioned using a custom natural profile and applying a lut - have you any plans to show how to do this workflow. Is a lut loaded in camera to view your footage and then loaded in your editor.

I'm working on possibly creating a whole training series of editing in FCPX. This would be included. It's done in post, and you can learn more about how it works through some RU-vid search as well. Ive talked about this in other videos. We weren't a huge fan of the Voigtlander lenses when we used them. The only one I decided to keep was the 10.5mm. I love that lens for vlogging, but I wasn't crazy about the softness of the other lenses.

Hi Scott, I am using the GH5 and I just realized a big problem when filming videos. When I keep Everything the same and film indoors my videos play fine but when I video outside in brighter light something is happening so my videos get all pixelated. Even the thumbnail for the outside .MOV file is a quicktime icon (on my iMac) whereas the video filmed inside has one of the frames as the thumbnail icon. I tried so many different things like adjusting the focus option from ASF/AFF to M but that does not make a difference. I have the settings just like your settings in your video about the GH5 settings that you mention in this video. When I shoot photos outside there is no problem. Also I can view the video in camera preview without the pixelation but when I take it from my SD card onto my iMac it plays horribly. It looks like a bunch of color cubes. I do not really know where to start with figuring out what is going on. Do you have any ideas?

thanks for sharing this Scott. I have a question. I just bought a GH5, is it possible to record 4k 60fps with a Sandisk Extreme Pro 128gb 95mbps write speed or do I need to get a CFast card? the camera options are all above 100mbps for 4k video recording. Im looking forward to hear from you. 😀

how do you like using natural vs vlog? Do you lose anything in bright sun or dark shadow transitions? I shoot everything in vlog and it takes forever to grade plus my MacBook is old and locks up. I may have to try this natural profile

old imac here, grading v log, particularly the 150mbit 10bits 4k codec is a pain and transcoding footage takes forever. But I think you have the best flexibility in v log, despite the poor specs of gh5 internal 4k 10 bit codecs. Experiment... I would say, and it depends on the situation. v log is maximum dynamic range and best flexibility in a multicamera setup for instance. But... grading skin tones using varicam/eva 1 luts and fluorescent lights didn't work well in my small scale corporate shoot, this situation introduced strange color artefacts/green color macroblocking. And shooting v log in 8-bit, which you will do for slowmotion, introduces real problems.

Hi, Scott. When I map Picture Quality to one of the Fn keys, I seem to get much less options than you do (purely restricted to the 24p options in my case but none of the variable framerates). Did you change anything in the menus to get those extra options? (I'm running the latest firmware). Loved the idea to map it to a Fn key by the way, thank you for that.

Hi Scott. Question: If you use -4 on noise reduction in your custom profile it's mean that your picture will be more noisy? Why you reduce noise reduction? Can you control it in postproduction? Thanks for answer:)

Yes, I would rather use a noise reduction in post production than on the camera itself. Much more effective and controllable.

Ok thanks I still thought you are still using it for your gimbal. I am planning to switch to m43rd next year, currently using Sony. Your channel was very helpful in my decision. The sony glass is just very expensive and really heavy for my shooters. Will address the low light with lights and fast lenses. IBIS will really work for us/ thanks again.

Did you shoot this video in Cinema 4k? At 3:05 I notice you slid the frame over to the side to show the graphic, but the frame extended. Was this C4k or did you just punch in?

If you pixel peep you'll find the in camera zoom is slightly lower quality.. Tested it a bunch on G85.. Could be different on GH5

Syd's Room yeah it’ll defo be a big difference, but I’d like to get slowmo footage for fun family type shoots. When it’s professional shoots, I’d be using 25fps most of the time unless I NEED slowmo and I’d usually pick and choose those situations. But I’m assuming that Scott shoots in 60fps in the GH5 during wedding shoots no?

Scott, do you use ex-tele conv while shooting in 1080p too? Already while shooting I have impression that sharpness and noise are not doing fine- I wonder if its recommended just while shooting 4k or there are just some circumstances when its doing well. Do you find it useful in 1080?

Hey Scott, if you are shooting at 400mbps, what memory card are you using and how many memory cards do you use for you’re main camera on a typical wedding day. I still am shooting at 150mbps and use a 64gb sandisk or Sony (299read, 300write). Just wanted to get a good idea if I would need to invest in new cards and if so how many. Thanks man!

I shoot at 400mbps and use the Sony G cards (299Mbs"read & 300MBs"write"). I also have some Angelbird cards that work. You will absolutely need a fast card for continuous recording. Otherwise, the GH5 will stop writing to the card after about 10-19 seconds. I have experienced some problems with the Angelbird, but a reformat (in the camera) seems to rectify the problem.

Nidal Safi thanks. I have a couple of those Sony cards, my main concern was the minimum write speed not dropping below 60mbps, since they don’t have the v-rating on the card. So have you experienced any lost or corrupted footage with the Sony?

Detwann Johnson No, I've never experienced corrupted footage with those cards or the Angelbirds. They keep up just fine. A 128GB card gives me a bit less than 40 minutes at the cinema 4K 400Mbs. I've tested and shot continuously with no drops. Again, if a card isn't fast enough, the camera will record for about 10-20 seconds then say " recording was cancelled due to the speed of the card". Don't sweat the v rating. I can attest for those 2 brands definitely.

Would anyone know why my GH5 splits the video recordings in to 3.99gb files? I'm using a Sandisk Pro SDXC UHS-1 v30 card. And use MP4 .

There's a bit different if I remember correctly. They were the ones that got me to try out Natural profile though for sure.

I found the White in Revery profile to give very nice colours but it got noisy very quickly which leads to more colour correction. Every time I try a different setting I find myself coming back to Portrait with a couple minor adjustments.
