Anyone not affected by “where are his glasses, he can’t see without his glasses” must have a heart of pure stone. It’s the saddest part of almost any movie I’ve ever seen. 😭
When Toni feels like she needs something a little bit lighter, you should check out Amelie or The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty (with Ben Stiller)... ...or for a classic, Sullivan's Travels (1941) 🙂
I can answer why it is called My Girl. Because though Vada and Thomas J are best friends, Thomas J loves Vada. Hence why he asked her to think of him. Thomas sees her as his girl. That is why he went back for the ring.
Well said even though the movie was so sad, I understand it's part of life. I'm thankful I did't have to go thru that as a child and I hope my girls never do either. - Toni 😥
@popculturallychallenged unfortunately, death doesn't discriminate. It can come for anyone and anytime. This is why I'm glad some child movies have the guts to tackle it.
One thing I have to say about Anna Chlumsky (Vada). For her age in this movie, she did an incredibly convincing job in this role. Everyone watching could feel the absolute pain her character was feeling during "the scene" as she's sobbing and slowly walks up to the casket and sees her best friend who she will never see alive again. I've seen recent interviews with her and whenever the interviewer brings up that scene, she always acts so humble saying her acting was just ok. But I think the entire world begs to differ. Her acting was out of this world incredibly done.
"Where are his glasses? He can't see without his glasses!" Emotional Damage! 😭 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Nancy L. Chlumsky and Glenda Chism. Hot Take Fact: Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin took 15 takes in their kissing scene. Casting Notes Fact: Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis also worked together in Trading Places (1983). Location Location Fact: The film is set in Madison, Pennsylvania however it was filmed almost entirely in Florida. The house used as Vada's (Anna Chlumsky) house was actually a bed-and-breakfast in Bartow, Florida. Movie Magic Fact: The willow tree seen throughout the movie is not a real willow tree. Finding a perfect pond with a willow tree was so hard that the creators found a different tree, removed all of its branches, and replaced them with fake willow tree branches. Practical Over CGI Fact: Macaulay Culkin did the infamous bee nest/death scene with actual bees. While they mistakenly used a hornets nest (not a bees nest) they did release actual bees. They released about a hundred live bees as CGI wasn't good enough at the time to do it more safely.
@@JustifyingT theres a study about sad music actually improving mood because of the chemicals released when we're made to emote, I'm guessing it's the same deal with movies.
So I picked this movie because it had a combination of sweet, sad, and funny along with great acting by Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis and the two lead child actors. It was also one I assumed Toni and Dave may not yet have seen, but that was actually quite a little hit back in the early 1990s. I remember watching this in 1994 when I was a kid during the NBC Network Television premiere (anyone else remember those in the 90s?) and then my family bought the sequel "My Girl 2" on Pay-Per-View later that same year. I promise that if I ever get a chance to pick another movie, it'll be something less sad. - Mike
I am glad you commented why you chose this because my first thought was "Who would do this to Toni?" 🤣It really is a great movie and a great pick for these two. Good job, Mike. I'll check out your channel.
@@blueeyedcowboy8291 Thanks! Hope you subscribe and feel free to comment. Yeah, I saw "My Girl" when I was a kid about 30 yrs ago so it was one that I knew many others would enjoy and that would probably be a good film for them to react to.
@@popculturallychallenged I hadn’t seen it in such a long time that when I watched the reaction I was even feeling it. I remember watching it as a kid but that was 20 years ago.
As a young girl, I did not understand the depth behind Vida's character She really lived a terrible childhood as all she thinks about is death and her father was a neglectful man. I think the death of his wife after giving birth to Vida made him not be able to relate to her much. This unfortunately happens. I Enjoyed watching the clip ❤️
@@tomhoffman4330I literally went from their Steel Magnolias reaction to this and I don't think I've cried this much in a two hour period. Gotta go watch some cute kitten or puppy videos now.
I grew up with this movie, saw it in theaters when I was 10, and then watched it over and over on VHS throughout my childhood. Still one of the saddest most gut-wrenching deaths in movie history. As soon as you guys announced you were going to be watching this movie I was like, Toni better have A LOT of Kleenex for the end!
I’m 43 and still cry every time. My ex used to ask why I watched it if I knew it was going to wreck me and I never could explain. It’s a beautiful movie and yes, it’s going to wreck me every time but I still love it.
Vada is my girl, she's the center point, Thomas Jay's girl, her father's girl, the teacher's girl. It very much is a coming of age drama and that involves death, from natural death to unfair death of a child. Vada in the film is shown to not understand it. Each time a new body comes to the house she begins to show she's a hypochondriac, which is also due to her not wanting to be around. Early on she noticed a child shaped coffin & had no idea what it was for and Harry not really being attentive is shown sheltering her. The My Girl title also applies to Shelly, My Girl is stepping in to show my girl what life is like growing up. Dramas back in those days didn't hold your hand and I was glad for it. Wish we still had that now.
Boy I knew Toni was gonna have the big feels on this one and this was a tough one on her.... I think she deserves a comedy or something light after that!!!!
Great Reaction ❤ If you haven't already seen it, y'all should watch "The Good Son". In my opinion, that's Macaulay Culkins best film. It was a complete 180 from anything else he's done. Take Care ...
This was Macaulays first movie coming off of Home Alone. People were a bit surprised he was cast in role in firm where he was not the lead. But obviously he had likely already signed the contract for the role in My Girl before he became a household name with Home Alone as it had literally been released only one year before My Girl.
I Remember My Dad Taking Me & My Sister To Go See This At The Movie Theater Back In 91, Time Goes By, Great Reaction Guy's To This Great Classic Movie, Great Cast & Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie,See You Both At The Next One,Katy & Otis
@@popculturallychallenged Wanna hear something weird???? I went on my email to see your response to my comment ( thanks for that!!!!!!)and of all things there was an advertisement for a crematorium, can you believe it? The internet sure sees everything we watch!!
Ive reached a point where I dont really cry at movies, even when Im feeling them. But watching Toni's heart break gets me every time. Its like watching her feel so sad makes my empathy go up to 11.
Idk why but it's the other way around with me, I cry very easly with movies/shows but can't physically cry with real life problems. Haven't cried from anything to real life for like 7 years
Opposite for me. I never used to cry at movies. Then I had kids. Now, anything that involves a kid getting killed or hurt…. Oof. Hits totally different
I've cried to this movie so many times, watching your emotional reaction was so dead on. You should check out A Little Princess and Bridge to Terabithia.
Loved this authentic reaction. This movie no matter what, will get me every time. Such a great reaction. Had me feeling like I was watching it for the first time with all the feels again. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, the movie guarantees tears. That's why I like the sequel better. Even if it's not as well regarded. I like Anna Chlumsky and Austien O'Brien dynamic in My Girl 2, but unfortunately there is no reaction to the movie only to the sad first part.
You said it's a coming of age story that took a drastic turn. Well that's how real life works, because most deaths are sudden & unexpected. But any movie that can get that kind of emotions out of you is a good story that had brought you into these charters & the story itself
Please do My Girl 2!! It’s one of the few sequels I actually like. There are sad parts but not nearly as sad as this one.😅 You learn about her mom and it’s a more coming of age.
It’s rough but I guess they figured that this coming of age story should include dealing with death. Makes sense and I think it makes it a better movie.
It was a great movie. It's so sad that kids have to deal with that at times. If I could wish for anything, it would be to keep our kids from harms way and keep them safe. - Toni 😢
Good reaction you two to this early 90s classic...if you're interested, they did a make a pretty good sequel 'My Girl 2' in 1994 with a now teenage Vada (Anna Chlumsky) as well as much of the original cast returning. It is worth a watch in my opinion.
This is a movie that I grew up with. I remember watching it as a kid and learning about death. Really takes the wind out of you as a child. If I were rating movies, I'd give it an R rating even though that it's rated PG. If Parental Guidance were ever intended for a parent to actually check to see if this movie should be watched by their child, they should really watch it first on this one.
Let me tell you this movie messed me up. I was in tears! Not even small sobs. I was bawling loudly. I have trauma from losing my sweetheart years ago and I can’t do funerals.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a really hard time with funerals. You know I really cared for the person or their family if I attend a funeral and have a really hard time keeping it together. And yes, I'm that person that will make sure the family is ok, they have their tissues and they have eaten and/or have something to drink. mama hen.... - Toni 🥰
This one still gets me all these years and a dozen views later. She's Thomas J.'s girl, and also Daddy's girl, and by the end of the film she's America's girl. You need to watch MG2 next.
I was the same age as Thomas J and Vada (as well as the actors who played them) when I saw it for the first time. From the first time I saw it, I cried, and I still do.
Toni thought she was out of the woods, then Vada broke out the "Thomas J will be alright, my mother will take care of him." Very sad, but very good movie.
Oh man! She is going to have an absolute and utter gut punch 95% of the way through the movie! I know I certainly did the first time I watched it! I watched the trailer for it and it’s a happy go lucky young love childhood is pure Movie…AND THEN… I was seriously sick to my stomach!
I just came across your channel today and this was the first video I watched. I haven’t seen this movie in a long time. I was SOBBING with you. I had to run to the bathroom before my husband saw me 😂 this movie hits me sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. I think seeing you cry so hard, it hit me too. Love the reaction. I love this movie so much, explaining death to a child is so hard and I don’t think Veda ever really understood it until Thomas Jay passed. The 2nd one is good ! She’s a teenager and is looking for more info on her mom to see what she was like. It’s not a sad one 😎
yea..i only watched your reaction when the movie finished...didnt want to see Toni crying all the time...i was 20 when i saw this 'for fun' with some of my friends, having some beers...they all laughed and mocked the movie...I cried my eyes out (inside ofcourse, didnt want them to see me cry)
