They had a stunt double for it but they quit last minute so she just did it. She said she has kinda felt like a fraud. So she recently became a real bee keeper. Said she loves it.

Jessica Tandy won the best actress Tony in 1948 for her portrayal in the original Broadway production of A Street Car Named Desire. The author of the Fried Green Tomatoes, Fannie Flagg, portrayed the redheaded women's session lecturer early in the film.

For this movie, there's no Ninny in any flashback. She was adopted, not blood relations to the Threadgoodes, preventing a marriage. All those intimate moments between Ruth and Idgie happen with no one else around. For this film, the old lady knows WAY too much. She's telling her own story

​@@barryscott8041 The book very clearly shows Ninny Threadgood to be a character very much involved with the Threadgood family to the point where she is raised by them and eventually marries Cleo, Idgie's older brother. The movie also removes a very important character from the book, Big George's wife, Onzell, and blends her into Sipsy's character in the movie.

@@alaynawhitten All true, but filmmakers always make changes as a novel becomes a screenplay; Directors (Kubrick for instance) have their own vision, and there's always changes. My comments are concerning only this film---

Ninny says she married Idgie's brother at the beginning of the movie. It doesn't insinuate that she's Idgie unless you forget everything she says about her life.

I've never been stung by a bee, but I've been stung by a wasp. It's _not_ something I care to repeat.

She did say, she wouldn't raise her son with Frank. Also we had that moment where Ruth, under oath, testifies to her love for Idgie...and Idgie's reaction

Now I want Arya to watch The Secret Life of Bees. I ❤ that movie.

All those intimate moments between Ruth and Idgie, with no one else around....The old lady knows way too much, and is telling her OWN story.

@@jessicab743 well because the film ends with a jar of honey and a note from the Idgie on Ruth's grave. its a super valid assumption. the film adaptation is creating that confusion with the mixed signals

​@@noviembre.rz1 The director intentionally created that ambiguity to the point where they had Jessica Tandy wear brown contacts because Mary Stuart Masterson has brown eyes.

Despite what the book says? Dude, Ninny was never Idgie. The book clearly points that out. The movie points it out as well by the fact that Ninny was married and had a child. Idgie did neither. And Idgie and Ruth were a couple. More than friends.

No blood relation = No preventing "Ninny" from marrying Idgie's brother. You are saying that Idgie couldn't possibly have married and had a baby.....After Ruth died. Why not?? And yes, I saw this movie when it came out in the theater. Me and everyone else knew that the two were a couple. It was obvious....dude.

Hello, she was Idgie sister in law, of course she knew everything 😂. I mean, even the whole town knew about their story and everything else imagine her family.. Of course she knew everything even a little bit more intimate.

They r not combined. In the beginning of the movie, Ninny introduced herself & said "...I married her brother Cleo. I was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family."

@@lynetteoliva1256 actually.. I completely agree. That is my take on the film as well. But I try to provide the full breadth of possibilities so people can make up their own mind. Why do I think its still in the realm of possibilities? Because in the film we never see Ninny or Cleo. And I think we don't see Miss Otis either. In the bedroom at the facility we see photos of Ruth alone and with Ruth with Idgie but we don't see any photos of Ninny or her son or Cleo etc. You'd think she would have photos of her husband and son and herself. Ninny is very elderly......she is possibly misremembering things from a third parties perspective. Slipping into dementia etc. I could go on and on discussing this from either perspective. Just one example since we're already talking about this. What a co-incidence that Idgie would just happen to leave a note very very very recently on the grave at the end. Why do I say so recently? Well, i'm from the southern US very close to where this takes place and I know how common afternoon showers are. The note was left recently. On the opposing viewpoint.....where would Ninny have gotten a jar to collect the honey? My viewpoint agrees with yours. I think they are two different characters, however I DO think the film was designed to be open to the possibility that they are the same character and I think it can quite easily be argued from either perspective.

@@chandie5298 The pic of the boy in a sailor suit w/the crescent moon was Ninny's son. It's the only pic she had of him. Maybe they should of had Ninny show Evelyn the pic w/her saying "Would u like to see a picture of my boy Albert?", but sadly they didn't. The reason why I know about the pic is because it's mentioned in the book. U know Idgie wasn't about photos & momentos of the past. Ninny was, so that's why she had those photos. Ninny was not showing signs of dementia, not everybody that is that old gets dementia. The movie shows Mrs. Otis' daughter-in-law so we know Mrs. Otis exists. Plus, Mrs. Otis is the one who died @ the end, & Ninny went back home just as she said she would, but nobody told her that they tore down her house while she was keeping Mrs. Otis company. So, I don't think it is up for interpretation, if u pay attention & not read into things.

I didnt'mean to say that I thought Miss Otis didn't exist, my point was to point out that all the characters mentioned during the story tellings are not shown in the flashback. I missed the picture of Albert (thanks for that). I'm well versed in dementia having watched its progress in both of my grandparents at a time when I was an adult and earning my psych degree (one of the reasons I chose that major) and now...my older sister. There are signs of dementia while people are still quite lucid. In other words, its often a slow progress, not a light switch. Also, its kind of a garbage bin label because there is a long list of symptoms and a long list of causes.....and the list of symptoms overlap across causes. Memory loss or remembering things differently...either forgetting parts or even adding in things that never occurred sometimes. In some types, people begin to lose vocabulary so they resort to expressing thoughts and ideas in a different manner using concepts and vocab that they still possess. Telling stories of the past from the third person occurs as well. They can recall that something happened but may not recall who took part in the events.....even when it was them. Ninny did appear to be completely lucid....but again, I was throwing out ideas to allow for a broad range of opinions rather than simply arguing for my own specific viewpoint because part of the beauty of films is that each viewer comes away with a slightly different story and lessons.

For this film, Idgie is Ninny. She tells far too many intimate details that went on between Ruth and Idgie, when no one else was around.

Another annoying difference from the book to the movie is that in the book, Ruth never met Idgie's brother Buddy. The Director, Jon Avnet, stated in the DVD commentary that because of the times, he felt he couldn't show the true relationship between Idgie and Ruth so he tried to hint at it. Their food fight at the Café was intended to be a subtextual love scene.

@@alaynawhitten U know what, it's probably because I have seen the movie so many times, that I forgot in the book Ruth & Buddy had never met, maybe I need to go back & read the book again. - That food fight scene was more like 2 best friends goofing off in my opinion. Also, in the book, Ruth & Idgie were together quite a bit longer than in the movie, like add on about another 10yrs. I still think these r minor criticisms. Like I have said, it's still my favorite movie next to THE COLOR PURPLE. - One movie adapted from a novel that completely ticked me off was TELL IT TO THE BEES w/Anna Paquin & Holliday Grainger. It is a period piece taking place in 1950s Scotland, where a female Doctor returns to her hometown after many years away, & eventually develops a relationship w/the mother of a young boy. Don't know if u have read the book/watched the movie. I loved the book. The thing that really bothered me about the movie was that they tacked on a totally different ending than the book, & that movie came out in 2019.😠 Yeah, that was one of the most disappointing adaptations that I have recently come across.

I watched it in middle school, same age, with my English teacher. We were all dead inside if you wanna know 😂.

But she turned into Twanda, and didn't really care. She was enjoying the payback.

Ninny is not Idgie! That is the one thing I dislike about this movie, & that's the movie hinting @ the end that Ninny possibly is Idgie. In the very beginning of the movie Nanny stated that she married Idgie's brother Cleo.
