The old girl is running great 👍. The price of fuel in this country is shocking too, we’ve been paying over $2 a litre lately, will the madness ever end? Nice looking hay. Regards from Down Under.
The old gas tractors are thirsty for sure. All the new stuff is. Somehow it make less emissions by using more fuel. And they claim greater fuel efficiency by using more fuel also.
You have some really nice looking hay this year . We have had a lot of rain this year , average around 1 1/2 to as much as 4 to 6 inches in some months this Summer . The price of gas or diesel is making hay cutting or any cash crop production 3 times as expensive too harvest .
The shifter location is fine and desirable. However most prefer the 756 style selection gate over the 706 style of selection gate even when both are in good shape. Many retrofit to the newer style as gate as an upgrade if they stumble across the parts in junkyard at a good price.
She sounds good. I still think you are going to like her real well. If the tractor is still a 263 engine and not been made bigger during a previous overhaul then should not really be any harder on gas than say a 560 or 656 when used near 60 hp level or so which also both used the 263 engine in gas. Yet you have a much better selection of useful tranny gears on that 706 compared to those others plus the ability to muster more hp if needed.
I agree with you to a point. PTO speed was lower on those as well as full rpm. I definitely enjoy the gear selection. If it does burn extra fuel I'm still saving a dollar a gallon over diesel. I think it will work out in the end. The 560/656 are fuel zippers compared to this monster. My dad had a 560 when I was a kid it would plow and disk 8 hours on 30 gallons of gas. I don't think this one will do that. In fairness though it will handle one more plow bottom and 2 or maybe 4ft more disc at the same speed. So that to might even out in the end. I figured it at 1.6 gallons an acre on the haybine. 9ft wouldn't hurt anything but my check book right now, so maybe someday.
@@rivervalleyfarm482 I should have chose my words better. Yes I agree a 656 or 560 gas will use slightly less gas as you pointed out the engine revs a little lessrpms to make 540 PTO rpm and they are also lighter in weight too. I suspect better hydraulics on the 706 leads to some hp and gas parasitic loss also. However they should be close to somewhat similar around 60 hp use levels. If way different I would suspect 291 engine upgrade during its lifetime. I will also take that Torque amplifier on your 706 over one on a 560 or 656 anytime and everytime. The 706 will not free wheel on the low side like those other two tractors will freewheel in low TA (assuming TA works of course).
5 gallon x $3.5 per gallon is $17.50 total. Or if diesel and say you burned 2.5 gallon at nearly $6 per gallon that is $15 total. If you burned 3 gallon of diesel then $18. 3.5 gallon is $21. Price is not really all that different for someone who is not running a tractor long hours every day. Don't get me wrong I am not anti-diesel as it is what i would have if I was a full time big operation farmer. However for a small time hobbyist gas can work just fine.
Is the haybine a 9' cut or 7' cut? A 9' would indirectly sorta help fuel consumption since it does not really take any more hp to run the 9' as compared to the 7'.
