Thank you. My latest machines have come a long way since this vid was posted.

I have to say I honestly have this inbuilt reflex where the second I hear that song I hit the back button on my mouse as fast as humanly possible, seeing as I wouldnt of minded actually watching this video I fought the urge to go back & thought I would post this hopefully friendly & useful note.

This machine was designed & built primarily to machine holes in chipboard for cabinet construction. It was able to machine MDF, but I found it was a bit weak to machine hardwood/aluminium unless it was done in many passes. I built another machine and made some changes. The new one is much more powerful with a 2.2Kw spindle, floating foot dust extraction & vacuum hold down. It can handle all timbers, plastics and aluminium.

Thank you. Yes, there are 2 motors - each with it's own driver. One is set up as normal, 2nd one is reversed and a slave to the first. This way it's always in synch - unless physically forced out of alignment. If so, then just stop, ref all home, and continue cutting!

OK, I'll think about it. I will need a few days to clean them up so everyone will understand them. I have all the drawings as well as a list of materials. This machine was designed around 100x50mm (4"x2") cold rolled rectangle tube for the rails. If you can source this locally, you should be able to build it.The table can be built out of anything you like, as long as it's braced correctly.

The rack is laser cut into the Z slide and the pinion is just a bought one. Like any rack & pinion, the design has to ensure it is preloaded to maintain position.

My accuracy is no worse than if I used rack & pinion or ball screws. If anything, it is better, as there is no backlash when using chain. The repeatability is perfect. If I machine a sheet of HDPE in 3 passes, you cannot see any of the passes, it looks like it was done in one go.

The now defunct Hitachi-Seiki vertical CNC machining centers worked a bit like the configuration you have...The difference was that the table moved in Y (front and back), while the spindle moved up and down (Z) and left and right (X)...

Dell runs XP Pro and works for me. There is really no need for a new PC with 64bit CPU, etc, etc to run a CNC machine as the older ones are adequate for the job.

I make/sell machines and kits - they all use roller chain and it works very well..... Some are direct drive, some are geared. Gearing reduces speed but increases torque/resolution. Cutting speed depends on many factors - mainly spindle RPM, number of flutes, endmill diameter, depth of cut and quality of finish desired..... Don't get too focused on a set IPM, for best results, use a Feed and Speed Calculator to determine optimum cutting speeds.
@PyroEvil
@PyroEvil 11 лет назад
lol but I imagine you can carve/cut at 200-250 ipm depend on the depth , router and endmill used ?

@EugeneVashenko
@EugeneVashenko 11 лет назад
Don't be too impressed LOL. It was a test run at 500 IPM, no actual carving was done at that speed. Cutting speeds depend on many factors, main one being endmill size. The 1/4" bit would have likely snapped at that speed.... IIRC, that table used 425 oz-in motors.

It's not a secret - I'm using skate bearings. If you read the comments in my other videos, you will find more answers re. linear motion and drivers on this 1st table. I've almost finished my 3rd table with a work area of 2440x1220mm. I have used the same bearing setup, but am trying out T5 belt as I couldn't get enough chain. I'm hoping the belt will work well.....I'll post some vids when it's running.
@PyroEvil
@PyroEvil 11 лет назад
sorry , I read in others videos you drive it by chain. It's directly connected to spockets or you have gears system to reduce/increase speed/force ratio ?

There is one flaw in this design The X axis is being held down only by the roller chain. There arent any bearings underneath the X square rails. I can see you have bearings on top and side of the rails.

I'm getting ready to build one, do you have tips for us on a cnc build either 4x4 or 4x6 not sure yet, what bearings are a good choice and is arduino okay to use? Thanks, Have a great weekend, Kevin
@EugeneVashenko
@EugeneVashenko 7 лет назад
Sorry for the late reply Kevin. Tips? I have many, I'll list 3 For your first build, keep it simple. Chances are by the time you are finished, you will want to build another one anyway. See if you can find a design you like and build a similar one, rather than reinventing the wheel. Forget the arduino and buy a G540 to save yourself a lot of headaches and wasted time.
@kocnn
@kocnn 7 лет назад
1 no problem, 2 yes I will definitely keep it simple, 3 I think thats how they are all done, we kind of take bits and pieces and call it our own. how is your machine traversing back and forth? belts? lead screw? I have one more question that I cant find a solid answer to. can a wheel be mounted instead of belts and pulleys. like a skateboard wheel, I understand it would need an encoder but I see no problem using 3 wheels, 2 on top one on bottom kind of configuration. nobody is doing it thats why I want to. Do you see any problems with that? I understand keep it simple and that seems the simplest to me. Thank you so much Eugene and have a great day

I understand exactly what you are saying. As a hobbyist $10,000 would be well out of my price range. I only just found your video so I didn't contact you about a kit, though I am very interested, however I expect even your kit will be outside of my budget. I have found a company in England selling a professional CNC 4 axis router for £3300, which would be towards the upper end of my budget. I do however like the look of your machine. How much are you selling kits for?

Since when has LinuxCNC supported USB as an output device? I'm pretty sure LinuxCNC doesn't run on 64 bits either. Different computers have different latencies. Whether more money spent achieves lower latency remains to be seen, but it often can translate into higher top speed. For what you spent you could have gotten an atom.
@EugeneVashenko
@EugeneVashenko 12 лет назад
Actually, it's very much in most peoples price range. I have had a lot of genuine interest from people who want a complete, working table, ready to use - that's why I changed the website. I wanted to sell kits - did you contact me? Quite a few people did, and I replied to everyone (I think) who contacted me. But only 2 people wrote back saying they might be interested, some said they weren't ready to buy, and most never replied..... Doesn't exactly inspire confidence, know what I'm saying?

You can use USB interface such as smoothstepper and get a new machine, if you really want to e fancy, a 64bit fast new machine, is really unecessary... I have a 1.8ghz dell ($50 bucks on ebay) runs on linuxcnc, and hobbycnc pro ($79) and the guys asked me why I use old pc, I asked them, did it give them any advantage spending $2k on their PC and usb interface, me setup is just $150 bucks, and it does the same thing... now convince why I would spend $2k???

If people buy new machines to run CNC, it's because they haven't done any research. It's better to research exactly what combinations work well together, and try to stick to what others have had success with, otherwise you may expend considerable time and money and get nowhere...
