My wife and I are splitting, at my folks til I make my big move a couple of states away...my guitar is now always close to me, in its case open laying next to my bed in my old bedroom...wake and bake and practice is so healing. Thank you
@@blacklabelnic Same here. I sometimes take my strat of 15 years with me in bed after a good practice or gig when i go to sleep. I love that guitar. It carried me, and still does, through rough times.
My God! I've never heard a better example of how much difference a tube overdrive can make. You kicked on the Page and it was just buttery smooth. It was like the aural equivalent of when you rub a set of NYXL string down with XLR8... lovely thing.
Hi Dan, great help here as I’ve been trying to set up my home rig assortment for a while, but the most helpful part is just the inspiration/reminder that you (who plays beautifully) will grab that 10 minutes and use it to practice, it’s so easy to say to oneself, “oh, it’s not enough time to bother...” so we wait for that hour block, and as a result don’t play all week. Thanks for all you do for us, over this last year you have helped put the guitar back in my life after a very long hiatus, where I feel like I’m learning everything new, and thanks to TPS hopefully better this time.
Yamaha THR is straight up the best piece of gear i'v ever owned, pound for pound. Had mine for like 6 years and i'm still waiting for a company to top it in terms of a pure home amp.
…and this amp is indestructible. Because of his light weight, it fell from a dining table 5 or 6 times. I broke the on/off switch but it's still working perfectly :-P ( sorry for my bad english)
TPS uploads always makes me feel like I'm hanging out with my friends. Superb, informative content. This video is no exception! As a keen beginer, it is great to see how experienced players play and practice at home. I would love to see more videos like this.
Great to see the Big Trees make an appearance. It's so versatile for something as small. I use mine to split my signal for wet/dry. I use the speaker-out into a 1x12 for the dry signal and the line-out into my modulation pedals and the front of a Fender amp for wet. Heavenly!
Slowly realising that a simple set up like this is all i really need as a primarily bedroom guitarist. Definitely struggling to give up my modelling unit (which has always clashed all little with my tube amp in truth) but having a set up that doesn’t let you tweak much naturally focusses you on the playing rather than messing with the gear.
Great video Dan. I love my TH10 for practicing, but hadn't thought of a small pedal-sized amp and small board to get more tonal variation. Thanks again for the ideas to keep improving. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I use a Boss Katana Air for practice which has a gyro-sensor wireless jack that turns on the amp when you pick up the guitar. I've been surprised at how much more I play just from that extra convenience of not having to dig out cables (and it helps with the living-room-friendly factor a lot). Very nice sounding amp as well + a good bluetooth speaker for music playback. On the downside it is quite pricey compared to the Yamaha.
Loved this! Great point about practicing with an amp you can't hide behind! I've been setting my amp with lots of clarity and I've been removing the "bass cushion" as I like to call it. Only downside is now I'm addicted to the clarity, and have discovered that most guitars have really muddy stock pickups regardless of pricepoint. Been putting Mcnelly pickups in all my guitars to remedy this, but they aren't cheap!
One of the best additions I've ever made to my practice rig is adding a TC Electronic Wiretap pedal. I tend to come up with some really cool riffs & chord progressions but then forget what they were later on. Now it's all saved on the Wiretap each time I practice. Invaluable.
Great getting an inside scoop to how you practice at home. It does surprise me however. With the gear you have access to on a daily basis, I thought you may possibly have a huge set up at the house. I actually do fully set up my gear I use at gigs at home and in fact probably even go more impractical with multiple amps, wet/dry, etc. It does give me some piece of mind when I get to a gig that my stuff is all going to be in working order. I have a band mate that puts his stuff away between gigs and then during set ups typically has a bunch of issues he needs to work through. Thanks for all you do Dan.
Great video Dan As many have already said the thr range are great, I own the thr10c and have modded it with stereo speaker outs and run it thru a 2×12 cab, it really fills the room. By far some of the best kit I've bought.
Dan, Best playing ever!! Really inspiring. The Big Trees sounds so amazing. I really understand how a great amp can help to improve your playing. When I got my Cornell Plexi 7 (also a beautiful hand made single ended EL84 amp), I understood how I needed to practice to sound good on that amp, because every note that was not properly played standed out. An amp like that kind of shows you the way. It is really helping me to get better.
One of the best Intros ever... at the End ...From E to C ... like it ! And.. yes i have the same THR 10 as my ever be by my side Amp. Fits in my Suitcase and travels with me ever since
I'm just taking my first steps from acoustic to electric and the THR has been a godsend - especially as I live in a flat! It takes pedals really well and is so convenient - one less obstacle to practising is always a good thing :-)

As a bedroom guitarist, I really appreciate this video. I am already familiar with the THR, and it is on my list to purchase. What I have been looking for, a really long time, is a low volume bedroom practice amp that sounds really good, but reveals every sound I make on the guitar. Both good and bad. A video on that topic, at different price points, would be great. Most of the time when a video is made on great sounding...revealing amp, it is only suitable for the stage, and is very expensive. More video on those beautiful chords you were playing would also be appreciated. Great video!
I love my old Vox VR30. All analog, two channel with reverb. I rarely use pedals home. That amp gives me all I need to cover everything. Smart little board, there, though!
I bought a THR after you mentioned it in a previous vid & I’m glad I did. Easy, neighbour friendly & pleasant sounding. If Yamaha bring one out with a loop to put a looper in (if that makes sense) I’ll buy that too. Great vid.
The series looks very promising. A topic that would be interesting is how do you plan your practice? What aspects of your guitar playing do you want to improve and how to you come up with the exercises that you need to execute in order to improve yourself.
It would be great if you could do a video on the Yamaha THR10 in detail. Specifically, to share with us how you would use it to dial in a similar tone to the Big Trees amp, and other classic amp settings like a Marshall, HiWatt, Fender and Vox, if possible.

Very nice instalment, Dan, thank you for the effort of making those. I think this is a great way to provide additional help with utilizing all those tools in really creative way. Sometimes we get stuck with the old ways, and watching you & Mick use your rig can greatly enhance our own skill set. In the beginning of this video, you talked about chords and understanding harmony and what it will do for your playing. I would love to see a series on understanding harmony. This is something i have been searching for on RU-vid and can't seem to find what i am looking for. Were you planning on doing something like this?

Well the irony is apparently I was wrong. The usage here is as a noun apparently, not a verb. My apologies to all. Getting grammar wrong actually hurts me more than being a terrible musician!
@@ThatPedalShow Mick, I believe, in order for practice to be a verb, it would have to be inflected such as practicing, practiced, etc. Here, practice is a "thing." I am practicing [verb]. Practice make permanent [noun]. Thanks to Justin Sandercoe for the latter example :-)
I pretty much just practice by using the effects send or line out on whatever amp I'm using, running it into the Mooer Radar, and playing through headphones. The preamps on some amps will still work when them amp is on standby, or I just put a dummy cable in the effects return to silence the amp in the room. It lets me use real tubes with headphones.
Awesome, Dan. I'm really looking forward to this series. Mostly voicings and ideas to take back into what I picked up in the show about two guitarists playing together. I really love the continuity you guys keep in the shows and blogs, as I can always go pack and rewatch a show that has more on a certain idea. You guys are a great resource.
I have a Yamaha THR10 and I like it. I like the clean and crunch. Not crazy about the gainier models. I prefer to use a dirt pedal with the clean or crunch channel. I also have a Vox AC4BL which sounds nice when I have time to plug in a pedal board; and it's so pretty to look at.
Dan, have you ever used headphones through the Yamaha THR? Follow up question would be have you ever run your pedal board through it and used the headphones? I'm working on having a two part system, much like yours. I have a good amp that I can get down to bedroom levels, but my hope is that when I am forced to have quiet practice time I can still use my pedal board to at least get a sense of what I am sonically trying for (knowing full well it can only come so far). I ask this having already watched your other episode on headphones and practice. I guess the question is specifically related to the Yamaha THR. Love the show BTW, and Case Nowie's comment about it being an "Always On" channel. Brilliant!
Those little Yamaha amps are ahead of their time. Stellar sounds, quick recording if you want to send a sound sample to someone, great look and design. Hardcore need one!
Very relatable Dan. I find I practice so much more now that we have a basement family room. All my gear is set up and ready to go. No faffing around and even if I am only down there to let the dog out for a pee and a sniff in the garden I can have ten minutes into a good set up sounding great, no bother. Actually, having this is why I moved on my THR10C. I didn't need it for the sofa noodle any more.
Fantastic video! Completely agree on the use of the team Yamaha. I use my Boss Katana-Air in the same way, I don't even waste time getting a cable out!

Dan, I use the same THR-10 and I agree with you. Typically I will plug a set of headphones into mine at night (to avoid any nasty notes from Management about bothering the neighbors), and I can hear every-single-fault in my playing. Keep up the good advise and I look forward to seeing Mick’s setup.
I’ve just recently found your channel, I think the way you cover things is fantastic and very helpful to me a lot of the things I wonder about I find somewhere you two have nailed them down for me so you’ve helped cut out a lot of the guess work which is perfect there are so many people on RU-vid who will lead you in all directions so I watch you guys and cutout the rest. I never thought pedals were necessary till I found your channel.
Very interesting. Great playing and lovely clean tones. Would love to see an hour long episode totally dedicated to clean tones and dryer tones for jazzier styles of play.
Love love love the THR10. I have it hooked up to my computer via USB and since it's stereo, it's become my defacto speaker set for just watching youtube or whatever on my home office computer. Seperate mix for USB audio and input means you can jam over songs with perfect balance and of course it's great audio interface for recording in a pinch as well. Can't beat the versatility for the price.

Hi Dan, Francis here, ;-), Perhaps hopelessly off topic but, your playing sounds so much more relaxed and is a lot more fluid than how i hear you play in TPS-shows. That is to my ears. More informal, perhaps less "i have to compete with Mick" sort of? On topic: Nice to see your practice "rig". Much more time is spent by almost everyone playing at home than in the rehearsal shack, the pub, the club, let alone the stadium,... Using a set up that reveals your playing ( no-one else is listening ( neighbours perhaps )) but also has a comfortable response and feel is essential for the many hours spent practising in solitude. Being a diehard Fender combo player i decided on finding myself a Marshall ( !? ) for the hi gain stuff ( Some people do much more outrageous things in their spare time ). What on earth am i going to do with a zillion Watts full stack metal monster. But, than i came across the JVM 1, a one watt dual channel head, found myself an old 4 X 10" cab fitted with early 70's Celestions. Brilliant match!!! Loud enough to annoy the neighbours, which i don't do, nice tone,... ( bit different response and feel from what i'm Fenderey used to ( taught me to better understand Marshalls ) but really nice cleans and awesome OD-ed ) at bedroom level. Huge, huge sound particularly with a bit of reverb and delay added. Hopefully everyone finds themselves a comfortable home rig, perhaps the is one of the most underestimated tools. I got to say I'm a little surprised that Dan has one of these Yamaha little amps. I have one and I love it for the convenience reason as well, in addition to the fact that doesn't sound too bad. I also love that I can throw 8 aa batteries in it and take it to a park and go practice. I'm really glad I watched this video, and of course I just love TPS in general. Thanks for sharing this, Dan!

Yup if I setup my gear it's staying in the middle of the floor till I have to play again. Wife is usually not a huge fan with me. Now I need to get a practice setup 💵 💰💵. And what I take away from this is ease of use and inspiring sounds equal more play time. Thanks Dan great video.
The THR10 is a brilliant little amp. When I'm feeling frisky I'll use the THR10 on the wet side and a Blackstar Fly3 on the dry (thanks to a Humdinger on my pedalboard). It makes for a totally battery powered, low volume rig.
Hey Dan & TPS - I love the show and the Vlogs. Getting insight into your setups and approach is great, and I love how *most of the time* you always talk in concepts rather than specifics. I think it would be great to point out in this Vlog that it’s not important to have a custom low watt amp, but rather to find a practice amp that is painfully clear with articulation, to give you the best way to improve. Great point and keep up the good work!
It really is super important to be able to start playing as quickly as possible when inspiration hits. I don't have the Yamaha, (which is very cool btw) but I leave my main guitar in a gig bag right by my rig. I just flip 3 switches and in under a minute I'm checking the tuning, and ready to play. It's so important to have as few obstacles as possible. Nice clip, thanks!
Hey Dan, you hit the nail on the head for me. I need to intentionally practise rather than just ‘noodle around’ and to do it well i need to 1. feel connected to the sound and 2. not give myself somewhere to hide. I need a small practice rig at the moment and you have given me some solid ideas to explore here. Ps i might not be the only one who makes this comment but have to say i think you playing here sounded great, really fluid (more legato / less staccato perhaps?) anyway if only i could make my tele sound like yours... cheers
I love this! I was living with my mrs family for a while and couldn’t have a playin area set up which stopped me from playing other than gigs for about 4 months, needless to say my playing got daggier than a wombats arse! Thankfully I changed it all around!
Great video. Dan have you ever thought about putting in a humbucker in the neck position, one that you can split into single coil if desired ? I have a Fender Custom Shop 63 model just like yours, I got it because I love the feel, sound, and the way it plays. Muddy Waters played one just like it at one time, I got to meet his son Mud Morganfield, Muddy was the first person I saw on tv that I remember as a kid growing up, it was the New Port Jazz Festival, I was four years old and I have been hooked on the blues ever since.
