My Honest Opinion About Linus Tech Tips his Maximum PC 2001 Dream Machine Pentium 4 Build
‪@LinusTechTips‬ made a Pentium 4 build!
They Rebuild the Maximum PC 2001 Dream Machine. They had a hard time to find the case. So they contacted me because 10 years ago I made a video about this case. And I had an original Cooler Master ATC 201 that I sold to LTT. This video is an reaction video on the build. I will give my honest opinion about the build, the specs, the platform and about Linus.

I’m with you Victor. I love my PIII’s and really dislike P4’s. I started my IT career in 2000, so maybe it’s because we sold a ton of P4’s in business computers. Never saw a P4 as a gaming CPU. Went from PIII to a AMD socket 939.

Aluminuim cases seem to be a rarity from other brands other than Lian Li, you google Aluminuim Cases and you get mostly Lian Li, I have a strong feeling Asaka made a Aluminuim case? but yeah would be good to see a modern version of these style cases, Rainbow Puke is Awful which is why they changed it to ARGB, but you still have aload of extra wires to deal with, which is also a pain in the a"£.

I remember the first computer magazine I bought in june 2001 that was boasting the new 1.7Ghz Pentium 4. There was also a test of a bunch of graphics card, from the Rage 128 Pro to the GeForce 3, with a Voodoo 4 in the mix as there was still plenty of unsold stock all over (they were completely outclassed by the way). IIRC it's the Deskstar 75GXP that's extremely failure prone. I have a working 60GXP.

13:42 Generally Deathstars and other IBM's wasn't that popular in Europe, I've never seen any of IBM excluding of course 2,5 inch from laptops. I don't know how the situation was in Netherlands where you live, but in Poland Samsung and WD (in new builds) was extremaly popular back then. Rubberish Seagate also :)

The ATCS 201 was such a nice case. Had one for ages until I needed something wider to fit the new cooler on a build that I did. Now I run an ACTS 840, a huge EATX case that should be able to fit anything that I ever want to build in it.

I used till early this year a Pentium 4 HT (1C2T; 3.0GHz) as backup server, but the motherboard died. It had 4 HDDs in total 1.21TB; 2x IDE 3.5" (250 + 320GB) and 2x SATA 2.5" (320 +320GB). It also had 1 Gbps Ethernet on the motherboard. The motherboard came from a 2003 HP d530 SFF. It did run from 2019 till 2024 every Saturday for 1 to 2 hours. It used FreeBSD 12; 13 and in the last weeks FreeBSD 14.0 on the advanced OpenZFS filesystem. The transfer speed for the backup was ~30 MB/s limited by a ~95% load on one CPU thread :)

Core 2 Duo was presented in 2006. So it is six years from this P4. But back in 2001 first generation of P4 wasn't good choice because of wrong RAM choice made by intel. RD RAM was very expensive compare to SDRAM. Also DDR SD-RAM was introduced. It was much cheaper, faster and easier to install. Pentium 3 Tualatin and 815EP chipset (Asus TUSL2-C) were better choice in 2001. And in 2002 they finally introduced second generation of P4 (Northwood) and 845 chipset (845E and P4 with 533MHz bus were preferable). Windows 2000 had compatibility issues with lots of games that weren't fixed even with Windows XP introduction. Lots of people stays on Windows 98 up until Windows XP SP1 or even until SP2. Or made dual boot to play in older games.

The only reason I watched Linus video was because a Tweet by Gordon Mah Ung (Editor of that Magazine) got me curious, I couldn't criticise his component selection as they were going for a perfect replication of the ultimate PC portrayed in that specific magazine (Spet 2001), you were the first person that came to my mind as soon as he told that "Viktor" was the source of the case, but then thought, that can't be he is like in Germany! I liked more your reaction video than the original 😁 but we are talking Linus here so don't get too pumped up! I couldn't agree more, IDE RAID with almost an unlimited budget make no sense, someone with that kind of cash should had chosen SCSI. Need to search in my magazine collection for the system pictures but that wire loom thing, like portrayed in Linus video, that can't be for serious.

That monitor, without a doubt, besides the case, is the highlight of the build. That is the reason that the family's computer, and higher spec'd rig, is not my gaming PC. I really, really prefer CRTs for gaming - but, good g'damn, that is something that you just can't get without spending modern OLED monitor money - and sometimes twice as much. I keep getting old CRTs for whatever they are being given away for, and I've found two gems... both are 1600x1200 at differing hertz (75hz and I think 85?) - but the Dell trinitron is quirky, and I may have accidentally broken the power switch... But I got this "Little Old Lady's" CRT that was an Envision 19" (dropped off repair of system, never picked up).... and whereas I could see a better result from my Trinitron that I had to remove the 'protective layer' from, I did... well... f'it up pretty nice. Old plastics are a bitch.

I have a Pentium 3 tualatin in an or840 powerleap adapter, rambus, radeon 8500 aiw, obsidian x-24, vortex 2 sq2500, SCSI, Windows me with unofficial patches. It's a bit unstable, and I don't know how to fix it, think it's a combination of scsi irq conflict and CPU being too fast. So what I mean is that it doesn't want to boot, so you cycle until it does. The CPU causes some issues in the BIOS, but I think the real problem is SCSI irq conflict. There are also some issues trying to run glide with a3d. There just may be too many expansion cards, and the CPU works funny because it's not meant for slot 1, and it's a dual socket board, which the Terminator also is questionable, having tried several boards that don't work. Oh, and the scsi is a hack job Chinese adapter for those server drives, using a regular scsi card, and IDK about compatibility.

@JohnDoe-ip3oq
@JohnDoe-ip3oq 3 месяца назад
@@nostalgicpchardware I have the Microsoft February update cd that updates most OS during this era, it's also on the archive website. You start to develop issues however when installing things like kernel ex, which is it's own thing, but I'm having instability with the hardware itself, like not booting and graphical corruption in the BIOS, which is likely from running an out of spec socket CPU in a dual slot board with a random terminator, and whatever oddities I'm getting from scsi using a rack drive over a converter. As a bonus tip, you can make 95 look like 98 by installing Internet explorer 4 before 5, ME is almost software compatible with XP having the most official updates, and the TNT2 doubles FPS using a 9x OS, maybe 90 fps in 800x600 quake 3 using 16 bit color. Also, some games like quake 3 can run on Pentium 1 if you use GLIDE, because for whatever reason glide bypasses the CPU instruction set check.

Very awesome video friend! ,3 This one I enjoyed watching a lot as I too did a P4 S423 build but with the fastest S423 CPU the Intel Pentium4 Willamette S423 CPU @ 2.00Ghz with 256KB L2 Cache and a 4900Mhz FSB. But I did use a slight better GPU a NV40 based one the Leadtek A400 AGP 128MB 256Bit DDR, here my old system setup: ------------------ Stealth 2001 Intel Pentium 4 2.00Ghz Willamette Socket 423m 256KB L2, 400Mhz FSB Thermaltake Indigo Orb for Socket 423 ASUS P4T Rev. 1.07 0135 With Intel i850 Chipset & AGP Pro 50 x4 4x 512MB PC-800-40 Rambus Samsung Original Leadtek A400 AGP 128MB 256Bit DDR (GeForce 6800 AGP) Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 3-Com 3C905C TX-M 10/1000MBit Ethernet Card Sweex 5 Ports USB 2.0 PCI Card, 4 External, 1 Internal Enermax Modu 82 525 Watt PSU A-Open H600-B ATX Case WinXP Pro USA x86 + SP3 nVidia ForceWare 84.21 WHQL. ------------------ As all the cable management goes yea folding flat data cables is super easy and using tie-wraps aka zip ties to bind things together is much neater and gives much better airflow than them horrific black cover tubes Linus and his team used, as the HDD"s go I always stick with Seagate Barracuda V 7200 RPM HDD's I have 6 of these drives all are in 100% healthy status and they never failed me yet. A nice SATA - 150 PCI card would of been better with a 10K rpm 150GB HDD, it would of suited the build better Win2K Pro like WinXP pro are the better operating systems to use for a P4, PI would personally choose XP pro + SP3 but without the 132 extra updates that came after SP3 as these will break the OS over time, SP3 it's self is more than enough. if I want to revisit the P4 build I will go with a lovely ATi Radeon 8500 AGP 128MB DDR or something in that range, intel & ATi were a well known configuration back in the day.

I was quite annoyed after watching Linus' video... Because I used the Coolermaster ATCS 200 case around 2009, to build my Q6600 machine. I kept that case until last year (2023), then I simply gave the whole machine away, including the motherboard and CPU. (I think the motherboard was the Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 ?) And then Linus said the case could be quite sought-after now, and might be worth a fair bit of money. Oh well. 14 years I kept that thing, and now it's gone. lol

It really was a nice case, though, with the removable motherboard tray, tons of HDD bays, and a fair bit of space between the PSU and top bays. Mine was the version with the darker mesh on the front, but without the small flap on the left. I don't know if that's the ATCS 200 version 2?

13:44 We used to call them "IBM Deathstar", because they used to explode so often. Even funnier, were the Quantum Fireball drives. I once powered up a Quantum Fireball drive outside of the case, and within seconds, a one-inch flame burst out of one of the main chips, and that was the end of that. lol Terrible drives. I think I might even still have a Deskstar 3.5" drive, but it's probably dead.
