I thought 2023 was insane with the amount of releases. I still love the brand, but it did put me off for a bit. I felt constantly bombarded with new ins while I was still contemplating the previous collection. I value brands who offer less, so you can make considerate purchases over brands that push out collections to keep momentum going.

I know how you feel. It’s so easy to get carried away when they are releasing new collections every week. I miss the Sézane of the past and want to be way more selective with my choices going forward.

I think they are getting too popular. Everything sells out quickly even with all these releases so that makes them release even more often. Feels like there might be no archives this winter because they might not even have inventory from past seasons!
@katie_louise
@katie_louise 6 месяцев назад
They also play off the scarcity mindset that the ‘in another basket’ or ‘sold out’ messages create. People get frantic because they think they wont be able to get their hands on something and then they buy more.
@hijlaa

@@katie_louise The archives are a prime example of that. The discounts aren´t even good, but yet people are falling over themselves to get pieces they didn´t even know they needed the day before? I´ll pass.

Such a great video, Katie! Thank you so much for this. Very refreshing to watch a Sezane review that addresses the elephant in the room... their constant releases are just absurd and overwhelming, and it seems like they're pushing consumers to buy more and more in an almost predatory way. At this point, can we even still consider it a conscious brand? It is still a great place to find good quality timeless pieces though, so your review is on point. Well done! ❤

I hear you but remember consumers have freewill nothing can push us unless we allow it. Let us first take our power back and decide not to follow whatever lust we have being needy greedy collecting collecting, because this is a sign of unhealthy habit due to emptiness of some kind felt inside . That's shopping addiction. If the brands ignite that aspect within us and we buy or hook into it then good for them , if we don't they'll eventually stop their strategy because it failed. The consumer hold the power and we set the tone. F ex if we all stopped buying acrylic polyester and acetate items you'll never see it on the market again. It's a global attitude and mindfulness but it's beautifully on its rise. Be the change you want yo see in the world is a beautiful and profound wise expression of this. I bless you All beautiful souls

I have noticed since September every week they release a new collection. Fast fashion vibes!!! I know sezane became really popular all over the world with the Instagram marketing they used on point and the demand for clothes increased but I find myself wanting unnecessary clothes that I really love but don't have the chance and the occasion to wear. Now that the holidays are over I decided that I will slow down with my purchase even from the archives considering not buying. I cannot do a no buy year because I love fashion and clothes but I can definitely refrain from buying each month.

I have been following sezane for a couple years but recently started buying from them in the last year. Their marketing is very powerful and they have had people like me hooked on their releases setting alarms because they use the scarcity principle. I notice some of their compositions are unacceptable given they are B corp certified and I don’t think plastics have a place in these textiles even if they may be more durable the microplastics they leak into oceans and effect wildlife is not right. I really was inspired by your low buy year and decided to adopt the same, I feel like I’ve turned into an absolute sezane addict and it has been at the cost of my bank balance and also so much time wasted! I think there are key pieces they will continue to produce and worth buying but you need to be pragmatic, thankfully we have your lovely videos to help with this as your opinions are so helpful! This was a long comment 😅😂

The thing that keeps me from moving to other French brands, like Rosae, is the shipping and free returns. It's brilliant on their end. Great video and it's nice to see you being more pragmatic about the brand. I too simply love Sezane, but you have to be so careful. For example I was selecting which of the Clyde trench coats I wanted to order and luckily checked the composition on each. It varied by color!! Two are 100% cotton and two are 50% viscose and 50% cotton. Why?! After buying and trying so many pieces, I now know that I am not a fan of mohair/synthetic knits, not a fan of the Gaspard or the Betty (just not good on me) and to check the fabric on every single item even within the same exact design.

I’d echo this. They are getting a little fast fashion. It would be far more sustainable to do pre-orders of popular items. It would save them on margins, as they wouldn’t have new sampling costs. Offer new colour ways. Poly clothing really should be on the way out at this price point.

I think Sezane has continued to do their basics well (Betty, tomboy, will jacket, Chloe, Leontine, and their trenches, etc), but their new releases are often subpar, especially in comparison to their established items. I mean with every new drop it seems that for every 1 or 2 decent items there are many more items of concerning quality. I’m not surprised because this tends to happen when a brand starts to gain more and more popularity but it is disappointing.
@katie_louise
@katie_louise 6 месяцев назад
Yep totally agree! Wish they would pull back a bit and focus on what they are good at and what people originally fell in love with them for. It’s true it happens to lots of brands. I believe they received some private equity in 2020 and that’s when it started to go down hill, as is often the case.
@sparklie962

Agree - there's been way too much coming out from Sezane in the past year, and I'm not in love with the noticeable increase in pieces being made in China and/or made of synthetic blends. I loved the Daisy as well, but it's too cropped for me - so I bought my first Leontine instead and the Andie cardigan. Like many others have said, I'm going into 2024 planning an overall fashion slow-down - and am sticking to my guns on slow-fashion quality/origin/and fibre composition. All I have left in my wishlist is the Baptise cardi and a pair of their loafers.

@@karmagrace2877 I bought the Vicky loafers last year and loved them enough not to return them but I probably should have as they were quite big - with an insole and heavy socks they are fine, but I was thinking maybe I'd try one size down for the Andre loafers as I saw on Reddit that they also fit rather large. I think this may be because they don't do half sizes? So a 39 is meant to cover off US 8 and 8.5? or at least that's what the REdditer said. In your experience do the loafers run big?

Great video! 100% agree. Also - This might not be relevant because I am not diving into labor ethics, but as someone who has friends in the fashion and garment industry in China - brands demand a certain profit margin will always, always choose the least expensive option they deem acceptable. And labor, in Asia is relatively cheap on a global scale, but it is still not as cheap as people expect! (Unless you want SHEIN “clothes”) It’s not magically free. So as a consumer when you get a garment made in China, global south, where-ever, your money still doesn’t stretch you as far as you would think. Most of it goes to brand profit still. We as consumers should be better educated on clothing quality, as well as you yourself, and demand better from brands together :)

Hi Katie, I really enjoyed your new style of video- extremely helpful to hear what are the best quality pieces. I started shopping from Sézane in the spring from a small town in Alberta, Canada and many of their pieces really are a refreshing change from the fast fashion market, especially in North America. I also really enjoy how fast Sézane ships ( 4 days typically) and that they have free fast international returns. BUT I have been very disappointed with all of the scratchy unflattering knitwear😒. I do love their classic cottons, silk and wool, and pick and choose good quality timeless pieces that will be in my wardrobe for many years. I am not sure how I feel about the silk pieces that are made in China; great price point but….. Great discussion! Please keep with the videos. I will look at the archives, hopefully for a new jacket, but I definitely won’t be getting up at one in the morning. Lol! Best😊

I totally understand! I still think Sézane represents some of the best quality clothing and the price point they offer, IF you are selective in what you buy and stick to the classic pieces made of natural fibres. There really are no other brands doing it like they do. I wish they would pull back on the other, trend focused, synthetic fibre pieces and focus on what they are good at and what people love them for. Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed! 🤍

I miss their silk items, too. I love that they line them with breathable viscose, rather than sweaty polyester. I wear silk year-round, but as underlayers in winter, I hope they offer a lot more silk clothes in the spring, it is my preferred fabric because of my hypersensitive skin. That particular floral dress won’t look great on me, I have aged, unlovely upper arms. I’ll go sleeveless at home on hot days, but would rather not in a dress that I’ll wear to go out.

Sezane can be sneaky with composition. Leontine label says Main fabric - 100% cotton and Stripe - 100% polyester whereas the website only states that the main fabric is 100% cotton. For a striped top, the polyester makes us a considerable proportion of the overall composition so dont understand how they cant state this in the website. Not cool!

I agree with you that the sequins are confusing, more FOMO small releases, and there are a few hidden gems in terms of fabric. I do however thing that some of the button down jumpers you mentioned are rather trendy. The "grandma vibes" on young people seems like like a trend to me 🤷‍♀. Not for me I guess. I'm also very sick of the pastel colours. I found Sezane last year and honestly was confused about their “slow fashion” claim. How can a brand put out this many collections and still be a slow fashion b corp? I always look thru every big launch, and yet I still find new pieces on their website every time I open it. That said, love the Auguste jacket from this collection, too bad the butter is already completely sold out 🥲 also curious what you think about the Farel jacket! It seems to run a full size too big, waiting for my smaller size to be delivered now. I will say one thing I reeeeaally appreciate about sezane (aside from the free shipping and returns) is their sizing suggestion. I’ve usually been able to hit the mark on sizing thanks to their “if you’re in between, size up/down” suggestions.

I discovered Sezane a year ago and I am so sad to hear how they have changed. I would prefer less frequent releases welll - quality lver quantity. THose constant releases and their items always being sold out immeditately doesn't give me any time to make mindful purchases! I also wish they would use more deep and richer colors instead of all these pastels. There was so much pastels even in the autumn collection. I do agree with the Will jacket being a great piece! I am 170cm and therefore probably one of the taller women you spoke off and can agree about this jacket looking good if you are tall. The suede Will jackets are stunning, I wish to own one one day. I only own the denim version. I have mixed opinions about the Rosaelle dress though. It looks great on first sight and I absolutely appreciate it being silk, but I don't like how the floral pattern doesn't seem too...be seamless? Not sure how to explain it since english isn't my first language. There are these lines on the dress and it looks like different patches of fabric have been seem together and the floral patterns are cut off. I think these makes the dress look cheaper than it should unfortunately. I appreciate these kind of thoughful videos from you❤

PS just fyi for any non-Canadians - that rose-gold sequinned skirt was launched sometime late fall for Canadians only - or at least that's what the email I got claimed. Maybe it sold well in the Canadian market and they decided to launch it world wide now? Or maybe it didn't and they just need desperately to flog it? I'm inclined to the latter as Canada can be a rather casual-fashion market. At least on the west coast anyway, people don't dress up for much - not even for a night out at a posh restaurant. (What can you expect from the place that gave Lululemon to the world, lol) . Can't say I've seen people rocking a lot of sequins other than *maybe* a New Years Eve party??.

Acetate is not a synthetic fabric like polyester, it is an artificial fabric derived from a natural product. It's really very nice, and the Sezane one has very good quality (at least the ones I have: Austin in black and navy). It is a dense fabric but not as heavy as wool, quite versatile for different times of the year. Of course, no washing machine. I personally really like what Sezane is putting out so I will go shopping, but there are things that I would never buy: sequins and 100% polyester are a no for me. I also tend to favor European manufacturing because I have seen in other collections that the same model in different colors manufactured in different countries had different finishes.

I agree about Will being a nice staple piece. I ordered camel suede Will 2 weeks ago and now they released my favorite colour khaki. Their suede is buttery soft and nice to the touch compared to khaki denim, which was thick and hard in my opinion. However, I agree about being careful if you are short or medium height. I am 166 cm and normally size S (sometimes XS) and my normal size looked like a nightgown on me, perfect in shoulder area, but hang weird around the hips and thighs with too much of excess material. I went a size down, but my plan is mostly wearing it with thin or tank tops in summer/spring. It would be to tight in arms with anything thicker than that. The situation where in-between size would be just perfect if those existed 😂

I really wish they would focus on bringing the basics that have been sold out for SO LONG back instead of releasing all these new pieces. :( I still love them so much but when they do these random trendy pieces like the lame' shirt... I wonder what the heck they are thinking. Why on earth do companies try to fix something that's not broken? Just look at companies like Brooks Saddles- they have barely changed for decades and are still the best saddles.

You are so right, I think this is what bothers me the most about Sezane! I love their basics like the Chloé, Will jacket, Leontine and Emile cardigans the most and I am so sad to see that some beautiful colors are always sold out and instead of restocking them, they just keep releasing poor quality trendy pieces instead.

So true. People fell in love with them so much originally because they were different. Now they are morphing more and more into a typical fast fashion brand, just three times as expensive…

On the first piece, look at the two photos at 1:53. The one on the left looks like it has wide sleeves, The second photo looks like the sleeve is either narrow or bell. I wonder if it is just folded back against the model's leg. Either way, it's a little deceptive. Allegedly the top designers are using a lot of sequins and metallics for everyday wear. I have looked at several collections. I've seen only one that does it well. The rest are mixing ordinary knits with metallic and sequined trousers and it looks odd. Imagine wearing the Bapteste cardigan with gold metallic trousers or sequins. It just looks out of place. I don't think it's a trend that will last long. That rolled line on the pants is a nod to the 1960s. They wore stretch pants with stirrups that had rolled seams on them. The trend started on the ski slopes in France and were called après ski pants. Eventually every junior high and high school girl had to have them. The trend died out around 1970, and until the past year, I really haven't seen them. They have been making a comeback on the runway, with and without the stirrups. The idea is that they fit comfortably into your ski boots and didn't pull up on your way down the slopes. Afterward, you went for drinks in them. That's where après or "after' came from. I had a pair and it's a trend I didn't miss.

The metallic range seems to be Sezane's response to the metallic 'trend' - which is sad because Sezane has a great style identity without having to jump on trends! Is it just me or is Sezane trying to appeal to a mass market now??

I actually no longer purchase knitwear in their standard mohair composition. They look lovely and I have a handful but don’t keep me warm enough. I also try to not purchase items with polyamide or those items made in China. All just personal preference and I still love their wool knitwear, silk blouses, summer dresses, and leather goods.
@katie_louise
@katie_louise 6 месяцев назад
I completely understand that. I think it’s a good idea to go with what you love. I also think setting boundaries on what you do and don’t buy helps to combat the overwhelm of all their new releases because you know a lot of it falls into your ‘no’ category 😊

Agree - and I've been puzzled by some of the newer knitwear pieces that have been blended with polyamide/nylon for no discernable reason, eg., cotton jumpers. They have 2 iirc in this blend that I absolutely would have bought if they'd been 100% cotton. A jumper is not a sock - can't see why they'd put so much or even any nylon into a cotton jumper as a good quality cotton jumper is already so durable on its own!?

I'm not sire whats going on, but a lot of French brands here have been increasing the synthetics and releasing more often. It's actually a turn-off here and ive noticed that the srores are kinda empty lately, so maybe they're pushing ads and drops on non-French customers to make up the difference.

of course they can! But the majority of people probably aren't going to are they? It's great if you wear it regularly but I think one sequin piece is more than enough per collection considering how few people will wear those items regularly and the fact they are made of 100% plastic.

I love most of my Sezane pieces, but there are two categories I won’t buy again: 1. Their fiber-blend knits with synthetics and/or alpaca - they are incredibly itchy and shed tiny fibers that constantly get in my eyes; and 2. Their goat-leather items - I can’t stand the feral stink of them. I’m waiting for a cold and very windy day to wear them, I can’t tolerate them in a warm interior, nor do I want to make others nearby gag! I’ve aired them in warm, shutoff rooms and in front of fans for months, it makes no difference.

It seems that all great brands go down Polyester Road eventually, management pressures them to increase profits this way - plastics are dirt cheap, but not very appropriate for clothing real bodies. I move on to different brands when they do this. I stopped shopping at my old favorite, Ralph Lauren, for this reason. I have no desire for a $300 polyester blouse, nor a $3 one, for that matter. I can’t stand synthetics, even in blends, so I just don’t consider them at all, however cute the style is.

I wasn't impressed with the latest collection. Too bright, too many sequins and just not the sort of thing I would wear. I look to Sezane for Parisian style elevated basics and the last couple of collections have not felt Parisan at all. I'm starting to look to other brands instead.
@spaaaaati

I think this review is pointless if you can't touch these things. You can't judge these things just by the photo. I ordered a striped blouse (collete?) and it wasn't what I expected. The material was hard and in the photo it seemed to be soft to the touch. As for skirts with sequins, I have two and each has a lining, it is very comfortable to wear and the sequins do not irritate the skin.
@katie_louise
@katie_louise 6 месяцев назад
I understand that! I can’t feasibly order everything from the collection (nor would I want to) but I do get a lot of people asking me for my opinions and these kind of videos. In future I can make sure to caveat at the beginning saying it’s just my initial impression. In regards to the sequin items, I wasn’t saying they weren’t lined, more the fact that producing so many sequin items is problematic to me. This isn’t the slow fashion brand that Sézane once was, it’s obvious they are producing more trend led items like the sequin skirt, which I don’t love. It’s full of plastic, what happens to it when someone no longer wants to wear it? People tend to get tired of statement items like sequins far more quickly than other pieces.
@spaaaaati
@spaaaaati 6 месяцев назад
In fact, the whole world is made of plastic and we can't escape from it - if someone drinks water from bottles, they produce much more plastic than this skirt. I think that it is important to make thoughtful purchases and buy things that we will wear every day. If someone has such style that they like to wear, for example, a metal show jacket and they wear it almost every day, then in my opinion such a purchase is ok. But if this jacket sits in the closet unused for half a year, it shouldn't be bought at all. I think that common sense is more important here and following your own style than trends. If someone doesn't feel it, they shouldn't buy it. Especially since I have many sezane items that are universal and that can be used to create a capsule wardrobe. But I also had to return many things because they looked ok in the photos but in reality I didn't like them.
@katie_louise
@katie_louise 6 месяцев назад
@@spaaaaati I completely agree! If sequins/metallic is your style and you are going to wear it again and again then it’s not a bad buy. But the reality is most people won’t and they are bringing out these items because they are ‘on trend’. One of the reasons so many people loved sézane in the past is because they didn’t fall victim to trends. That’s my point 😊
