Great video as always Sharon!! I always look forward to seeing your growth and learning from you (: I have a quick question at 11:40 though when you start talking about 'Putting myself in users shoes' (I'm a current UX student so just looking for some clarity). Isn't it usually advised to remind oneself that we are not the user and shouldn't assume that role?

Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Yes, you're absolutely right. Typically you should not assume you are the user. If I had to go back and had more time, I would love to have an interview with a few of the key users of this app. However due to a lack of time, I took a "shortcut" and assumed I was the user for quick empathy insight although it's not the most proper way to do this. Hence later on in my presentation n my "research plan" + "reflections" section, I said if I had more time I would love to personally interview these key users to have that genuine insight instead of taking this "shortcut" due to strict time constraints. My interviewers seemed to understand. Hope this makes sense! You are right! Thank you for this great question :)

This was so helpful, thank you so much for sharing! I noticed the brief said to use IBM's design language but you used Hertz's branding and overall look. What made you choose to do it that way, and was that something they brought up when you presented it to them?

My pleasure! In my opinion, it was still Hertz website and I felt say if I used IBM brand colors and such it would feel quite off. Overall, as long as the website look and feel is accessible and you can adopt whatever design system is in front of you- even if it was “HERTZ” branding, it wouldn’t matter. I feel design language is generally similar across the board as long as it looks professional- so even if I used “IBM”design language, it be more or less too similar to really notice a difference. The branding (more colors) is the thing that makes it noticeably different across company platforms. (Yellow vs blue) And no, they didn’t bring it up at all :) the style I designed it in seemed fine enough so I think they just passed it. :)

Thanks for this video and the Figma file. I find it quite valuable and it's always interesting to see how other people work 🙃 As for 21:25: I agree with your assessment and I was thinking of other ways to push back on this: A: It's basically a repetition because the client has already selected the prefered car at an earlier step. If data shows that clients get upsold quite a lot here then perhaps that is an indication that the benefits of a higher upgrade were not obvious enough on an earlier page. B: If the client insists on having this feature for economic reasons I'd try to make it more obvious to the user, so it's clear that it's an upgrade and not just: 'Let's hope the button gets clicked by accident!'. I would do this by listing all advantages clearly (e.g. 1 extra child seat, premium interior, less road noise. At the moment there is only 'Need a little more room?') and make the button stand out more. All of this to make sure an upgrade by the user was an intended choice. What do you think?

hey! I agree with your point B more. Considering when talking to stakeholders they are not familiar with UX terms, using a UX point of view won't appeal to them. Most likely, stakeholders will respond to points concerning the brand and revenue. In addition to my comment with the brand, point B would be a better thing to mention in my opinion- and great point!

God! Loved this. I'm genuinely a little curious regarding the 'designing high fidelity screens' section of this challenge though. Often I find myself REALLY short on time and I end up editing a screenshot of the website. Are your screens designed from scratch??

The screens are designed 50/50 so some I would reconstruct from scratch however I would screenshot and reuse pieces of the website and maneuver them into the newfound structure that I created for this design

I rebuilt my portfolio again when I watched your usefullllllll video, I have 2 more requests plz: you wrote your notes in google doc and after that, you took a shot screen and put it in Figma but it is not complete photo especially for checkout page , can you share the Google doc file here? A suggestion: Can you place a still background while you are walking through your Figma file? It is distracting to have an animated gradient background on top of your educational narration. As a viewer, I want to concentrate on your excellent content since it is packed with great information. Good job.

Hi sharon, currently I'm doing a class on UX/UI design, but my group is finding it tough to make our design stand out in terms of colour and aesthetic. Would you have any tips on how to make our design more innovative? Our current approach is to take inspiration from different features in real world applications eg Airbnb. Thank you!

Hi! Sorry for the late reply. In terms of innovation for UI I believe there is only so much you can do as there have been many avenues that have been explored which you can see on dribbble. However, I would always think very well-thought-out design is always more impressive than an app that may not be as innovative but "prettier". If you are still looking for "innovative" UI, i would just take inspo from dribbble and see what you like best. Doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be acceptable IMO. Just be careful not to be so blindsided and focused on being so "innovative" with the UI to the point that the UI actually becomes distracting to the UX since it's so new and they are not familiar to use it (= more friction = bad UX). Aim to be familiar but new.

One question though: I am not quite understanding the purpose of the "research plan" in this design challenge when there are no research being done. Could you explain why they would want a research plan at the end?

I believe the point of the research plan is to formulate how you would further this project if you had more time. To show you are thoughtful about the evolution of the project even beyond the initial presented design :)

I used the “inspect” element on the website. It’s kind of like a code thing if you right click on a website. I suggest to look up a tutorial on how to inspect elements and in the info box, I saw what fonts they use. It’s a hack!

How would you overcome mental block of not wanting to spend 9 hours on a project when the statistic likelihood of receiving the job is low regardless of quality? That just seems like an enormous commitment for potentially nothing. I am just getting started and about to begin a bootcamp and I was a bit floored to hear how much time you spent on just an interview project.
